A document produced by the Society for Mitigating and Gradually Abolishing the State of Slavery throughout the British Dominions, better known as the Anti-Slavery Society. The group was founded in London in 1823 by a group of politicians, philanthropists, and businessmen including William Wilberforce, Joseph Sturge, and Zachary Macaulay. The document discusses the horrors of enslavement—even unfavorably comparing the British colonies’ conditions with those in the US—and decries the fact that, after the 1807 Slave Trade Act, essentially nothing more had been done to put “an end to a condition of society which so grievously outrages every feeling of humanity”. We find a single copy of the Ellerton and Henderson edition in physical format listed in OCLC as accession number 83930673.

This is a remarkably complete copy: it has not only the blue paper dust jacket but also the original secondary tissue jacket, and it additionally has the publisher's original paperboard slipcase (bearing the same copy # as the limitation leaf). The condition of the book and both jackets is virtually as new (in fact, the leaves remain unopened); the paperboard box is slightly worn at its edges but is still quite sturdy. Description: (WOMEN'S INSTITUTE OF DOMESTIC ARTS). The Womans Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences was just part of the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton. It promoted traditional forms of American female domesticity, such as sewing.Archive. Early 1930s. Scranton, PA. A small archive of materials related to the Women's Institute of Domestic Arts of Scranton. The papers include examination papers, reviews of said examination papers, pictures of clothing and scissors, etc. The materials belonged to a student named Susan Reiter. The exams deal with making clothing (probably a pragmatic skill during the depths of the Depression), with exam statements like Decoration is distributed more even over a dress as is becoming, There are three measures, the blouse length, hip measure and a fairly tight arm-hole measure and The press cloths should be boiled in fairly strong soap suds to which a pinch of baking soda has been added. Most of the pieces are on the schools letterhead and in generally fine condition.

We are at the mercy of the Whigs and have to submit to whatever course they may direct. Every democrat wishes an adjournment & would willingly vote the same to take place tomorrow. The doings of this Congress will be distinguished for many acts of unholy & vile character – my only hope for the welfare of the country is that the next Congress will undo – whatever we may do - …. William Jack" William Jack was born in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, July 29, 1788; studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced; moved to Brookville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, in 1831 and engaged in mercantile pursuits; division inspector of militia for Westmoreland and Fayette Counties 1830-1835; sheriff of Brookville in 1833; was a contractor and builder in Mississippi, and assisted in the construction of a canal in that State; returned to Pennsylvania, county judge of Jefferson County about 1840; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843); engaged in agricultural pursuits; returned to Greensburg in 1846, and died there on February 28, 1852.
