Paris [&] London: V. Morlet [&] McLean, 1830. Twelve Superb Hand-Colored Lithographed Plates Depicting Scenes from the Debtor's Prison of Sainte-Pélagie ADAM, Victor. First edition. Oblong folio (10 5/8 x 13 7/8 inches; 270 x 352 mm.). [4] pp. of descriptive text. Twelve numbered hand-colored lithographed plates. Plates lithographed by Bernard. Each plate with the publisher's oval blind-stamp in lower blank margin. Bound without the printed title-page. Mid-nineteenth century quarter red calf over marbled boards, smooth spine ruled and lettered in gilt. A superb example with fine contemporary hand-coloring. The plates are captioned: "L'Écrou;" "Chambre du détenu malheureux;" "Chambre du détenu philosophe;" "Les Élections;" "Le Cabinet de lecture;" "Le Cabaret;" "Le Café;" "Le Repas dans la cour;" "Les Jeux dans la cour;" "Le Bain du créancier;" "Le Paye;" and "Sortie du débiteur;." A rare album depicting various scenes at the Parisian prison of Sainte-Pélagie. This prison, once located in the 5th arrondissement, was active from 1790-1899 and housed many renowned prisoners during and after the French Revolution, including the Marquis de Sade. In this series, Adam conveys in various scenes of prison life the dignified squlor to which its inhabitants were reduced. Exceptionally rare. We have only seen this book once before - a copy with modern hand-coloring which we sold in 2003. OCLC locates just one copy - BCU Dorigny (Lausanne, Switzerland). Jean Victor Adam (1801-1866) was a French painter and lithographer. Born in Paris he was the son of Jean Adam, an esteemed engraver. During the years 1814 to 1818 he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and also in the ateliers of Meynier and Régnault. In 1819 he exhibited 'Herminia succouring Tancred.' He was almost immediately afterwards employed to paint various subjects for the Museum at Versailles, amongst which are, 'The Entry of the French into Mainz,' 'The Battle of Varroux,' 'The Taking of Menin, 'The Battle of Castiglione,' 'The Passage of the Cluse,' 'The Battle of Montebello,' 'The Capitulation of Meiningen;' the last three in association with Alaux. He also exhibited down to the year 1838: 'Henry IV., after the Battle of Coutras,' 'Trait of Kindness in the Duke de Berri,' 'The Postillion,' 'The Vivandiere,' 'The Road to Poissy,' 'The Return from the Chase,' 'Horse-fair at Caen,' and numerous other subjects. He then retired from publicity, till 1846, when he appeared as the exhibitor of some works in lithography, to which branch of art he afterwards restricted himself. In this line he produced a lithographic album, 'Views in the Environs of Paris,' 'Studies of Animals for an edition of Buffon,' &c. He obtained a gold medal in 1824, a second class medal in 1836, besides several others from Lille, Douai, and other cities. He died at Viroflay in 1866. "Beraldi assigns between 7000 and 8000 designs to Victor Adam [1801-1865]...A Parisian by birth, he remained in the capital all his life, but this did not prevent him from drawing negroes, Turks, Chinese, and other peoples all over the world in his Paris studio. He was famous, indeed, as a faiseur de bonshommes, that is to say a specialist in adding groups of small figures to the foreground of architectural or landscape drawings by other artists...His immense production contains many amusing albums concerning the life of the time" (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, p. 194). Sainte-Pélagie was a debtor's prison in Paris, in active use from 1790 to 1899. The former Parisian prison was located between the current group of buildings bearing No. 56 Rue de la Clef with Rue du Puits-de-l'Ermite in the 5th arrondissement of Paris at the old Place Sainte-Pélagie. The penal structure held many noted prisoners during the French Revolution, with Madame Roland, Grace Dalrymple Elliott and Marie-Louise O'Murphy being among the known prisoners. After the revolution, the Marquis de Sade was imprisoned here, as was the young mathematician Évariste Galois. During the July Monarchy, the "April insurgees" were also detained there, and some managed to escape through a tunnel. The painter Gustave Courbet was also imprisoned there for his activities in the Paris Commune. Bobins V, 1524.

Description
Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1962. First Edition. First Printing, a Review Copy, with the publisher's typed slip laid in. Octavo (21.5cm); black pebbled boards and pale grey cloth backstrip, with titles stamped in black on spine; dustjacket; [xii],223,[5]pp. Dustjacket is price-clipped, lightly edgeworn, with just a hint of sunning to spine; Near Fine. An attractive copy of the New York author's first novel, an exploration of the Great Migration, which addresses the hypothesis of what might happen if all the black people left, leaving an all-white southern state of the Union. "Tucker Caliban and his ancestors are heroes of a story set in a mythical state in the deep South. Beginning with the life of an African slave in the United States, it ends with all of the black population leaving that state in 1957, making it the only state without one black person in residence. Told as a fine literary parable, the story comes so close to reality as to fill all the requirements of the SF of social criticism in the form of the "warning story" (Barron, Anatomy of Wonder 3-226). In 1963 it earned the Rosenthal Foundation Award of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and the John Hay Whitney Foundation Award. See AANB, Vol.5, p.51. 81388.

Later stiff vellum, inked title on spine, marbled edges. Lacking a small portion of paper from the upper margin of ll. F6 and F7 with minimal loss of text, marginal staining, some occasional foxing. From the collection of the bookseller Giuseppe Martini (his pencil notes on the front flyleaves, cf. E. Barbieri, ed., Da Lucca a New York a Lugano: Giuseppe Martini libraio tra Otto e Novecento, Florence, 2017). Rare second edition. In 1521 Fregoso vulgarised Lancino Curti's Silvae and in 1525 in Milan at Giovanni Giacomo Da Legnano and Bartolomeo da Crema's press he published his own 'silvae', also known as Opera nova, which includes Lamento d'Amore mendicante, Dialogo de musica, Pergoletta de le laudi de Amore, Discorsi cottidiani non vulgari, De lo istinto naturale, De la probità and, finally, De i tre peregrini. In this work, all of Fregoso's favourite themes return. Fortune, in contrast to Love, returns victorious thanks to her alliance with the blind Pluto who has wreaked havoc everywhere (Lamento d'Amore mendicante), while Platonic and Neo-Platonic concepts are repeated several times, in dialogue with Antonio Telesio and Simonetta: the correspondence between the harmony of the heavens, the harmony of nature and the harmony of the inner world (Dialogo de musica); the distinction between human and divine Love (Pergoletta de le laudi de Amore); the theory of demons that influence the actions of men according to their nature (Discorsi cottidiani non vulgari); the act of faith in the Reason innate in man, which allows even the child abandoned on the desert island to achieve his own form of education (De lo istinto naturale); the celebration of Probity, which comforts the embittered poet to flee the vanity of studies (De la Probità); and finally the fantastic journey of I tre peregrini, in which Eutimia accompanies Apuano, Filarete and Fregoso to a fair, which is the emporium of Fortune, and prevents them from buying what Fortune and Lust offer them through Epicurus, to follow instead the path of intellectual exercise and literature nourished by philosophy. Antonio Fregoso (or Campofregoso or Fulgoso) Fileremo (or Filareno, i.e. lover of solitude) was probably born in Carrara, around 1460, the illegitimate son of Spinetta of the noble Genoese Fregoso family and lord of the city. Lacking male heirs, his father legitimised Antonio by an act later ratified by Emperor Frederick III. Spinetta, linked to the Duke of Milan Francesco Sforza, appointed in his will Cicco Simonetta as administrator of his estate and guardian of his son. After Spinetta's death in 1467, Fregoso lived with the latter in Milan. In 1472 Galeazzo Maria Sforza officially granted Milanese citizenship to Fregoso, but the following year Simonetta, as ducal minister, deprived him of Carrara and Lunigiana, which had passed to Federico Malaspina, rewarding him in exchange with the fief of Sannazzaro in Lomellina. In 1478, on the occasion of Gian Galeazzo Sforza's ducal appointment, Fregoso was made a knight. After a brief absence, he returned to Milan, where he married Fiorbellina Visconti di Lodrisio. In 1499 he swore allegiance to Louis XII when the latter conquered the Duchy of Milan, thus keeping his knighthood but losing the feud of Sannazzaro. Fregoso then decided to retire to the villa in Colturano, on the road to Lodi, from where he sent his first works to Iafredo Carlo, president of the Milanese Senate. His retreat outside Milan did not, however, prevent him from frequenting the circles of Cecilia Gallerani and Ippolita Sforza Bentivoglio (as can be seen in the novelle I, 21 and III, 9 by M. Bandello). It is not clear what changes in Fregoso's life the succession in Milan of the Sforzas, French and Spanish after 1512 brought. He probably died around 1530. The fact that he is mentioned among the poets in the 1532 edition of L. Ariosto's Orlando furioso (XLVI, 16, v. 3 ff) does not serve to shift the terminus post quem since many of those mentioned in the poem were already dead at that date (V. De Matteis, Fregoso, Antonio Fileremo, in: "Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani", vol. 50, Rome, 1998, s.v.). Respectively in 1506 and 1507 Fregoso published two poems, the Riso di Democrito ("Democritus' Laughter") and the Pianto di Heraclito ("Heraclitus' Weeping), each in fifteen chapters of tercets. The translations into French by Michael d'Amboise (1547) and into Spanish by Alonso Lobera (1554) testify to the international fame of the two poems (often published together as I doi filosofi- 'The Two Philosophers'). The issue of fortune is presented in the form of a dialogue between the author, Lancino Curti and Bartolomeo Simonetta in the Dialogo de Fortuna (Milan, Pietro Martire Mantegazza, 1507). No longer in tercets but in octaves is the poem Contentione di Pluto & Iro ('The Contention of Pluto and Irus'), first printed in Milan by Mantegazza in 1507. Also in octaves is Fregoso's most famous work, the Cerva bianca ("The White Doe", Milan, Mantegazza, 1510) (cf. A. Dobelli, L'opera letteraria di Antonio Fregoso Fileremo, Modena, 1898). Edit 16, CNCE19885; USTC, 830993; L. Description
1820. First Edition. (QUEEN CAROLINE). [BARRON, Edward]. The Legislatorial Trial of Her Majesty Caroline Amelia Elizabeth, Queen of England, Consort of George the Fourth, for the Alleged Crime of Adultery with Bartolomeo Bergami. London: H. Rowe, 1820. Octavo, contemporary quarter speckled calf, marbled boards, spine elaborately gilt-decorated. $1400.First edition: An uncommon contemporary account of one of the greatest royal scandals of the 19th century, with five engraved plates including a folding frontispiece of the courtroom.Following the charge of adultery laid by King George IV against Queen Caroline and her former servant Bartolomeo Pergami (given here as Bergami), the House of Lords proceeded to examine every salacious detail of the queen's alleged misdeeds in 51 days' worth of proceedings here compiled by Edward Barron, author of a fictionalized version of Caroline's life titled The Royal Wanderer. The accusations presented in court included testimony about an indecent fandango dancer named Mahomet, a sighting of Her Majesty with a bare breast while in seclusion with Pergami and opinions of a chambermaid regarding stains on the queen's bedclothes, along with many questions about bathing, sleeping and dining arrangements. Some, all, or none of this may have been invention prompted by greed, malice, or the king's well-known desire to rid himself of his long-estranged wife, with Barron declaring himself convinced that the trial established ""the innocence of a long persecuted Queen"" — despite Caroline's generally famously licentious behavior. The present account was one of the earliest complete reports to make it to press, appearing shortly after the trial's conclusion in November. The volume is illustrated with an oversized, folding plate engraved by Robert Roberts after H.R. Cruikshanks, titled ""A Sketch of the Interior View of the House of Lords, Representing the Trial of Her Majesty Queen Caroline"" and providing a key to the figures depicted, as well as with four other engraved portraits of Henry Brougham, Louisa Dumont, Thomas Denman and Princess Charlotte (some copies are described as having an additional portrait of the queen, not present here). Text and plates with occasional foxing, front free endpaper with old tape residue. Handsome contemporary binding with expert restoration to joints and extremities.

Description
India, Early 20th century (?). Very good. Large painting on a manuscript leaf (in Arabic) from the "Sharh al-Wiqayah" by Burhan al-Shariah, Mahmud ibn Ubayd Allah (SEE BELOW), 353 x 216 mm, hinged onto plexiglas mount with clear tape so that the text of the manuscript is visible from the back; matted (matte size: 500 x 360). A remarkable erotic Indian painting of an uncommon type, which we describe as "zoomorphic erotica." The painting depicts a camel within a frame, surrounded by an antilope, a lion, a horse, a gazelle, and a bull; within each animal is a depiction of an orgy comprised of six (or in the case of the camel) seven men and women, all finely rendered by an artist of considerable skill. This is a very high quality piece. THE MANUSCRIPT on which the painting was applied belongs to a rare text: is an excerpt from the "Sharḥ al-Wiqāyah," a commentary on a work of Hanafi fiqh (law) by Burhān al-Sharīʻah, Maḥmūd ibn ʻUbayd Allāh (d. 1274 or 1275), specifically from the chapter about PREPARING BODIES FOR FUNERALS. We are grateful to Kelly Tuttle for her scholarly generosity in identifying this text, and for dating it to the early 20th century. MUST BE SEEN TO BE FULLY APPRECIATED.

This beautifully and bountifully illustrated edition collects over 150 beloved fairy tales by the great Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875), the writer of novels, poems, travelogues, plays, and, of course, such enduring stories as "The Little Mermaid,” “Thumbelina," "The Snow Queen," and "The Ugly Duckling," all of which are presented here, along with less familiar but just as treasurable tales, fully illustrated in 100 enchanting engravings, including full-page plates, vignettes, chapter headings, tailpieces, and decorative initials throughout. 8 5/8" X 6". xxxii, 525pp, plus two pages of ads. Bound in deep blue cloth over bevelled boards, with the figure of moonlit and star-spangled fairy stamped in green, gilt, white, and black to upper board, two smaller fairies stamped in kind to spine, and both lettered in black and gilt over green. Foxing to pages throughout, with occasional smudge, else unmarked. Illustrated in 100 engravings throughout.
