FIRST EDITION of Bohr, Kramers, and Clarke's influential paper that "contained drastic theoretical proposals concerning the interaction of light and matter." Printed simultaneously in German in Zeitschrift fur Physik. "After Kramers had succeeded in extending the scope of the correspondence argument to the theory of optical dispersion - thus rounding off a treatment of the interaction of atomic systems with radiation that accounted for all emission, absorption, and scattering processes - Bohr ventured to propose a systematic formulation of the whole theory, in which what he called the virtual character of the classical model was emphasized. In this he was aided by Kramers and a young American visitor, J. C. Slater, and the new theory was published in 1924 under the authorship of all three. The most striking feature of this remarkable paper, 'The Quantum Theory of Radiation,' was the renunciation of the classical form of causality in favor of a purely statistical description. Even the distribution of energy and momentum between the radiation field and the 'virtual oscillators' constituting the atomic systems was assumed to be statistical, the conservation laws being fulfilled only on the average. This was going too far: the paper was hardly in print before A. H. Compton and A. W. Simon had established by direct experiment the strict conservation of energy and momentum in an individual process of interaction between atom and radiation. Nevertheless, this short-lived attempt exerted a profound influence on the course of events; what remained after its failure was the conviction that the classical mode of description of the atomic processes had to be entirely relinquished" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Sepia-toned portrait photograph of Rayer in middle age, by Antoine Samuel Adam-Salomon (1818-81). 275 x 212 mm. Paris, circa 1860. Minor damage at corners due to removal from mounting, traces of former mounting on verso. Excellent, rare , and good-sized portrait photograph by Adam-Salomon of the dermatologist and pathologist Rayer, author of the classic Traité théorique et pratique des maladies de la peau (1826-27; G-M 3989). The photograph is typical of the work of Adam-Salomon, who originally worked as a sculptor, but turned to portrait photography under the influence of the Munich photographer Franz Hanfstaengel. Adam-Salomon's antique poses, making much use of light and shade to give painterly effects, were inspired by Classical sculpture and painting and incorporated expensive fabrics and settings. He also favoured heavy retouching of the negatives, for which he was criticized by some contemporaries. He was, however, much admired for the imposing character of many of his portraits . . . Some of those hostile to photography, such as Lamartine, were persuaded to consider it as an art by the work of Adam-Salomon. He founded his studio in Paris in 1859, working on reproductions of works of art as well as portraits of the rich bourgeoisie, and he proposed working on a portrait gallery of European notables. He was made a member of the Société Française de Photographie in 1870 and received the Légion d'honneur the same year ("Antoine-Samuel Adam-Salomon," Answers [internet reference]). The photograph shows Rayer dressed in brocade vest and frock coat and standing in front of a classical pillar or column, with a velvet-draped table next to him on which are stacked two old books. This rare photograph was purchased in an auction that contained a few items owned by Rayer's descendants. .

Newbury, Ohio, 1850. Six letters. Excellent.. John Marvin Bacheldor (1826–deceased) was born in Newbury, Ohio and attended Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He would later run the Rural Home Family School for Boys in Pownal, Vermont, and then Bacheldor’s Business College in York, Pennsylvania. His parents, Sarah (1800–1876) and John Bacheldor (1786–1858), were New England farmers who moved to Ohio sometime before 1825. Offered here are six letters from Sarah and John to John Marvin, from the latter’s time as a student at Williams. The letters are mainly updates on the family farm and on the various illnesses spreading throughout the region – at the time, smallpox and scarlet fever were epidemic, though Sarah Bacheldor also notes several cases of “brain fever.” She mentions an intriguing county-wide school meeting: “3 schools met at [?] Centre Church I suppose the 4th Fuller Town Sc think us so joined to slavery they dare not even meet in the same house with us O when will people cast out the [?] before they say brother [...] Perhaps those who are branded as pro slavery would do as much to liberate the slaves as their accusers, I dont think we need to go down South to find something to differ about”. (September 10, 1847) Though Ohio was an early abolisher of slavery, and famously a stop on the Underground Railroad, the issue was far from settled among its residents. Sarah also mentions, but does not elaborate on, some strife with both the Baptist and Methodist churches: “You may wish to know something about our religious prospects they are not very encouraging The Baptist Association met at the Centre but I guess they had more strife & contention than ardent desire for the salvation of souls & there was no [?] blessing. The Methodist[s] had a quarterly meeting the last of June & yet we were not revived It is a time of great stupidity in all this region truly”. (July 14, 1848) Overall, a look at life and attitudes in rural Ohio in the mid-19th century.
