Description
Oakland, CA: Tribune Publishing Co, 1909. First edition. First edition. [2], 104 pp. Bound in publisher's light blue cloth (one of at least two variants) with white lettering. Near Fine with a little soiling to cloth, corners slightly bumped, former owner's name on front free endpaper, thumbsoiling. An early 20th century polemic advocating civil rights, dignity, and due process for Black people written by Zachary Withers, an African American resident of the Elmhurst neighborhood of Sacramento, and printed by the book-publishing wing of the long-running Oakland Tribune newspaper. It seems to have enjoyed decent distribution (reputedly by a company out of Portland, Oregon, The Advocate) and got positive write-ups in a few Bay Area newspapers as well as Chicago's The Broad Ax. The book proved to be the high-water mark of a series of meetings in 1909 by Black activists trying to establish a Y.M.C.A. for their community, which ultimately did not make it beyond the planning stage. We could find no evidence that the author's purported other work Slavery Days was published. Photo frontispiece of the author.

Description
New York: The American Indian League, 1911. 8pp. Original printed wrappers, stapled. Minor edge wear, short closed edge tear, some sunning to edges. Internally clean. Very good. A stated second edition of this rare work collecting eight Native American songs emanating from a variety of tribes. The lyrics have been translated into English from original songs from the Chippewa, Omaha, Arapaho, Navajo, and Ojibway. The work was prepared by Reverend William Brewster Humphrey, who provides an introduction which opens, "The discovery that the North American Indians had anything that could be classed as music is of very recent date, hardly more than thirty years ago. Only within the last two or three years have these songs attracted public attention, but now the demand for them is rapidly increasing. He provides additional background on the music and credits some notable musicologists for their work in collecting Native American songs. Humphrey also mentions that another pamphlet published by the American Indian League prints an address entitled Indians Use of Song, which "tells the stories of the songs and with them makes an interesting one hour program." Some titles of the present songs include "Manitou Listens to Me," "Song of the Leader," "The Canoeist's Love Song," and "Death Song." A rare work, though an exact institutional count of copies held is difficult given the only record in OCLC reports digital copies.

Description
Nairobi: Taylor Advertising Ltd, 1964. Quarto-sized (24.5 x 18 cm.), 96 pages. Text illustrations (partly colored), additional illustrations contained in advertising matter. Index. FIRST EDITION. An interesting cookbook published in Kenya in the early postcolonial era. The cuisine is unequivocally more British than African, despite the mention of local fresh water fish like Nile perch and tilapia and the inclusion of a section on curries and samosas, but there's nary a trace of a Black African face in the illustrations and advertisements. Original color pictorial wrappers. Light cover soil and wear, otherwise very good.
