In 2 acts to a libretto by Franz Xaver Huber, Das unterbrochene Opferfest was first performed in Vienna at the Kärntnertortheater on 14 June 1796. "It was in Vienna that [Winter] achieved his first decisive success with Das unterbrochene Opferfest (1796) ... As Kapellmeister of a court with the high musical reputation that Munich enjoyed at the time, Winter was a well-known figure and, particularly after the success of Das unterbrochene Opferfest, a highly esteemed one ... His importance lies in the skill with which he fused his various stylistic ingredients, especially in Das unterbrochene Opferfest." Anna Amalie Abert, revised by Paul Corneilson in Grove Music Online.
