Description
London: Elkin Mathews and John Lane, 1893. First edition. One of 50 large-paper copies on hand-made paper. A Fine copy. Quarto (8 5/8 x 6 5/8 inches; 220 x 169 mm.). [i, blank], [i], limitation], [iii-xvi], 132 pp. Handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf ca. 1897 (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in) and with their exhibition stamp in black on rear paste-down. Full dark green crushed levant morocco, covers bordered in gilt enclosing a six-line gilt border. Spine with five raised bands decoratively framed and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt-ruled board edges, multi gilt-lined turn-ins, top edge gilt, others uncut. With the bookplates of the renowned collector C. S. Ascherson (dated 1897) and Paul Louis Weiller (also a famous book collector and a great friend of J. Paul Getty) on front paste-down. Housed in a felt-lined dark green cloth clamshell case, spine with leather label, lettered in gilt. A couple of tiny and unobtrusive minor stains on blank borders otherwise a clean copy in a wonderful and early, if somewhat austere binding by the great firm of Zaehnsdorf. Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan, A Play About a Good Woman was his "first successful dramatic production" and one of his many masterpieces (Mendelssohn). His talent for astute adaptations of traditional comedic tropes like the long-lost child or mistaken motivations are utilized to full effect in this narrative. The four-act comedy was infamously first performed on 20 February 1892. In addition to pulling on popular stars to perform, Wilde had the young men of his entourage arrive at the premier wearing green carnations in their buttonholes-something that scandalized attendees when, in a metatheatrical moment, one of the characters onstage appeared with one as well, referencing its cost and symbolism for decadent immorality. Prim attendees were, in fact, surrounded by a generation of young men devoted to such aesthetic ideals and wearing the same flower. Mason, 358.

London: John Camden Hotten [and] George Routledge and Sons, 1872. First editions. Two octavo volumes (7 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches; 184 x 133 mm. [&] 7 x 5 3/8 inches; 179 x 137 mm.). ix, [2], 14-222, [4, adv.]; viii, [1], 14-224, [4. adv.] pp. Black and white frontispieces with original tissue guards, black and white text illustrations throughout. Bound c. 1920 by Rivière & Son for the Gardenside Bookshop, Boston in full emerald crushed levant morocco with a gilt decorated broad inlaid border of maroon morocco, enclosing an elaborate gilt frame surrounding a maroon morocco border and decorated sunken central panel within which are figures from the text pictorially depicted with multi-colored, padded morocco onlays. The Bab Ballads with the onlaid figures of Babette and Jacot (page 67) and More Bab Ballads with the onlaid figures of Sir Berkely and William Lee (page 122). Lower boards with gilt ruled maroon morocco border, surrounding an elaborate gilt border with decorative gilt corner pieces. Spines with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt ruled board edges, elaborate gilt turn-ins, cream watered silk liners and end-leaves, all edges gilt. Original gilt decorated green cloth covers bound in at end of each volume. Outer front joint of volume 2 with subtle repairs. Housed together in the original felt-lined, green cloth slipcase. A fine set. This publication evidences how a writer's work is never done. First published as a humorous column in Fun magazine, in 1876, Gilbert collected fifty of his favorite poems for the book Fifty "Bab" Ballads:Much Sound and Little Sense, it contained one poem collected for the first time (titled "Etiquette") and excluded 25 previously published poems. As Gilbert explained: "The period during which they were written extended over some three or four years; many, however, were composed hastily, and under the discomforting necessity of having to turn out a quantity of lively verse by a certain day in every week. As it seemed to me (and to others) that the volumes were disfigured by the presence of these hastily written impostors, I thought it better to withdraw from both volumes such Ballads as seemed to show evidence of carelessness or undue haste, and to publish the remainder in the compact form under which they are now presented to the reader" (Gilbert). However, "Gilbert's readers were not happy with the loss, and in 1882 Gilbert published all of the poems that had appeared in either The "Bab" Ballads or More "Bab" Ballads, once again excluding "Etiquette." Some twentieth-century editions of More "Bab" Ballads include "Etiquette" (Ellis). The poems range from satire to absurdist texts and will surely entertain all who read them. "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" (Princeton). Bath-based Bayntun Bindery acquired the firm in 1939, transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery," which is still in existence and family owned.

The book would be adapted into a fondly remembered television special in 1966 and a feature film in 2000. London: Printed for the author; Sold by J.J. Stockdale, 1813. First edition. Very Good. Octavo. [4], 209, [4, ads]; 163, [1, errata], 8 [publisher's catalogue] pp. Original drab boards with cream paper spine. Soiling to boards. Paper spine labels mostly rubbed away. Volume one lacks front free endpaper. Edges untrimmed. Remarkably clean and bright throughout. A Very Good, fresh copy of a scarce book. Eliza S. Francis sets her narrative poem against the backdrop of the War of the Roses. Francis was clearly interested in both telling a dramatic tale and commenting on historical events, as the final forty-eight pages of volume two consist of her detailed notes on the poem. Francis discusses her sources (mostly Rapin's History of England), offers biographical sketches of historical figures mentioned in her poem (including William Caxton, with a discussion of Gutenberg, de Worde, and early English printing history; Martin Luther, Margaret of York, and the Earl of Warwick), expounds on the locations mentioned in her poem and the battles that took place there, and explains the morality she attempts to portray in her characters (the feminine virtues of Jane de Clifford, for example). We could not locate much information on Eliza S. Francis. Her only other published work seems to have been the narrative poem Sir Wilibert de Waverley, or, The bridal eve (1809), which was "intended as a sequel to Mr. Coleridge's fragmentary tale, entitled Love." She clearly took a somewhat scholarly (or at least genuinely historical) approach to her fiction, however: The Rival Roses demonstrates her desire to combine narrative flair with fact and commentary. Very Good.

Description
[U.S. CONSTITUTION]. Newspaper. The Pennsylvania Packet, and Daily Advertiser. October 1, 1787 (No. 2700), Philadelphia: John Dunlap and David C. Claypoole, including the September 28 resolution of the Confederation Congress to send to the states for ratification the recently completed U. S. Constitution. 4 pp., 12 x 18¾ in. "The United States in Congress Assembled. Friday, September 28, 1787. CONGRESS having received the Report of the CONVENTION lately assembled in Philadelphia, Resolved unanimously, THAT the said report, with the resolutions and letter accompanying the same, be transmitted to the several legislatures, in order to be submitted to a convention of delegates, chose in each state by the people thereof, in conformity to the resolves of the convention, made and provided in that case. CHARLES THOMSON, Secretary." (p2/c3) The convention called to revise the Articles of Confederation met in the Pennsylvania's State House in Philadelphia starting on May 25, 1787. After many delegates agreed that the Articles could not be sufficiently improved, they started to draft an entirely new structure. Maintaining their pledge of secrecy, after months of private deliberations over trade, defense, taxation, representation, separation of powers, the election of a president, the slave trade, international relations, and many other issues, the proposed United States Constitution was signed by thirty-nine of the fifty-five delegates on September 17. Two days later, the Constitution was first published by the Pennsylvania Packet and four other Philadelphia newspapers. The cover letter sent by George Washington, president of what came to be called the Constitutional Convention, submitting the plan to Arthur St. Clair, the President of the Congress of the Confederation in New York, was also printed then. Congress received and read the proposed Constitution on September 20th. As a sampling of their deliberations, William Grayson of Virginia thought it was too weak, while Richard Henry Lee of Virginia and Nathan Dane of Massachusetts thought it was too strong. On September 27, Virginia's Richard Henry Lee proposed that the Constitution be sent to the executives of each of the states. A Delaware representative quickly added, "in order to be by them submitted to conventions of delegates to be chosen agreeably to the said resolutions of the convention." Ten of the twelve states then represented in Congress voted in favor. Before Congress adjourned for the day, the majority of Virginia's representatives and a minority of New York's representatives also indicated their support. On September 28, Federalists holding out for a unanimous vote found a way to compromise with anti-Federalists: Congress unanimously resolved to send the Constitution to the states, but without any recommendation or approval. Arider from New York City arrived in Philadelphia with the resolution that same day. George Clymer presented his own resolution to the Pennsylvania Assembly, noting that "the late Federal Convention, has digested a plan of government for the United States, and recommended that it should be referred to the consideration of State Conventions…" After a "very long, and animated debate," Clymer's resolution passed by a vote of 43 to 19 and adjourned until 4:00 p.m. But only 44 members returned, falling two shy of the necessary quorum. The Assembly's sergeant-at-arms was sent to show the resolution to absent members. Two who still refused to attend were seized by the public, dragged through the streets, and thrust into the assembly room. The involuntarily completed quorum voted that "it is the sense of great numbers of the grand people of this state, already signified in petitions & declarations to this house, that the earliest steps should be taken to assemble a convention within the state for the purpose of deliberating and determining on the said constitution." They called for the election of deputies who would assemble for that purpose "on the third Tuesday of November at the State-house in the city of Philadelphia…" (p2/c3-4) Other articles of interest in this issue include news from Europe and a brief piece against Indians "from the western country, [who] still continue their depredations on the whites…" (p2/c3) The Pennsylvania Packet, or the General Advertiser (1771-1839) was founded by John Dunlap in late 1771 as a weekly newspaper in Philadelphia, though it relocated to Lancaster during the British occupation of Philadelphia in 1777-1778. On May 30, 1783, Benjamin Towne turned the Pennsylvania Evening Post into the first daily newspaper in the United States. However, with Towne branded a traitor and forced to hawk his own papers on the street, the newspaper collapsed the following year. John Dunlap and David Claypoole then made their Pennsylvania Packet the first successful daily on September 21, 1784. It underwent numerous name changes in the 1790s until sold in 1800 and renamed Poulson's American Daily Advertiser.

Description
London: Taylor & Francis, 1870. First edition. Original wrappers. Fine. A LANDMARK IN COMPUTER SCIENCE: FIRST EDITION OF JEVONS'S PRESENTATION AND EXPLANATION OF HIS "LOGICAL PIANO", THE FIRST MACHINE TO SOLVE A MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM AT SUPERHUMAN SPEED. Jevons invented a "logical piano" (so named because it resembled a small upright piano) that could perform, through a sequence of switches, various types of logical calculations. In doing so, he became "the first person to construct a machine with sufficient power to solve a complicated problem faster than the problem could be solved without the machine's aid" (Goldstine, The Computer from Pascal to von Neumann ). "From his thinking on the processes of logical inference, [Jevons] developed the idea that these might be performed mechanically. As early as 1865 he was trying to build a 'reasoning machine, or logical abacus' (Papers, 4.69), which evolved through several stages into a 'logical piano' or logical machine which he demonstrated before the Royal Society in January 1870. He thought it 'quite as likely to be laughed at as admired' (Letters and Journal, 250), but it was later to be recognized as one of the forerunners of twentieth-century computers, and is preserved in the History of Science Museum at Oxford." (R.D. Collison Black, Dictionary of National Biography). "Jevons's logical piano could handle up to four terms and their negations (one per key) and provide all the possible combinations. Its operating principle was one of the most basic modes of thought, the law of duality. Given one to four terms, the machine, using this law, would expand, eliminate, those with contradictions, and churn out the conclusion. In this way, 'the actual process of logical deduction is thus reduced to a purely mechanical form, and we arrive at a machine embodying [Boole's] Laws of Thought." (Margaret Schabas, A World Ruled by Number: William Stanley Jevons and the Rise of Mathematical Economics). "On the Mechanical Performance of Logical Inference," a paper Jevons read before the Royal Society on January 20, 1870, is his most detailed description of this early prototype of the modern computer. In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London for the year 1870, pp. 497-518, Vol. 160, Part II (the complete volume). London: Taylor and Francis, 1870. Quarto (9x12 inches), original wrappers, largely unopened; custom box. Complete with 26 plates (3 for Jevons). A FINE COPY.

Description
"We done a fine business the two first years and made nearly 30000 Dollars clear each year, but this year we will not clear ten thousand. [We] drove for the vein at the depth of 715 feet . . . and think we will do well next year. . .." One three-page and one two-page stampless folded letters. They were sent by James Dorn who owned two mines in partnership with his brother, William Burkhalter "Billy" Dorn, to Joseph Slocum, in New York and Savannah. Both letters are from South Carolina and bear free-frank manuscript postmarks as James Dorn was the local postmaster; and processed mail at each of their mines. One postmark reads "Sleepy Creek, Sept 1st [1855]" and the other "Dorn's Mines, Decr. 30th [1859]." These letters from James Dorn read in part: "I am the same man that you stayed with at Sleepy Creek, I moved here three years ago and formed a copartnership with my Brother for ten years, we done a fine business the two first years and made nearly 30000 Dollars clear each year, but this year we will not clear ten thousand and the old part of the mine has failed at about ninety feet and drove for the vein at the depth of 715 feet . . . and think we will do well next year. . .. We have leased the mine to a man two years ago and he ground up the ore we had raised and made about three thousand dollars and quit and the mill is standing still. I expect to work it when I go back. . .. "Can you get no offer for that mine, we have got out some 4 or 5 thousand Bushels of flint ore and about 4 thousand Bushels of Slate ore at that which I would guarantee to average 20 cents per bushel...the large rock I sent from the Elbert Dorn mine I would be willing to pay $4.00 Dollars to have it ground up to know how much gold it contained per bushel. . .." It is often forgotten that fifty years before the California Gold Rush, a similar frenzy occurred in the Southeastern United States following the discovery of gold near Cabarrus, North Carolina, and after more was found near what today is Dahlonega (the Cherokee word for "yellow money") prospectors scoured the region and found small veins and nuggets as well as microscopic particle in mineral deposits scattered across a gold belt that ran through both Carolinas. The possibility of striking it rich nearly drove some men mad, and William Burkhalter Dorn was one of them. His grandparents had settled in South Carolina and by the time Billy was an adult, he had become the owner of the family's 529-acre plantation in the vicinity. Although well-off, he still envied his even wealthier neighbor, John W. Herst. In time he became convinced that gold was located somewhere on his property that he let his plantation go to seed while spending every waking minute searching every nook and cranny of his 500+ acres for it. As he ran out of place to search, he was stricken with the fear that his imagined gold lay just next door on Herst's property. Unable to bear the thought, he visited his neighbor and convinced him to sell a 1,263 -acre track at just under $1 per acre. Unfortunately, Dorn continued to ignore his plantation, and it appeared banks would soon foreclose. Legend has it that as he was overtaken by desperation with only three days left to pay off his loan, Dorn flung a shovel on the recently purchase track, vowing that if gold were not located where it landed, he would give up his 15-year quest. Incredibly, he found that the shovel had landed on an astonishingly rich lode right at the ground's surface. At the age of 54, Dorn was rich and could he immediately repay his debt. Soon, he used slaves to do the laborious mine work while he managed the business and within the next 16 months the mine produced $300,000 of gold, over $35 million in today's money. By the time his brother James, who had become his partner around 1855, wrote his 1859 letter, the mine had provided over $1 million of gold, nearly $190 million in today's money. The Dorns were rich beyond their wildest dreams, so rich that at one point Billy considered shingling his Oak Grove mansion with gold tiles. But his wealth begat boredom, and he turned his attention to romance, something he had ignored his entire life. He became enamored with the 15-year-old daughter of a business associate who was equally infatuated with him. They married in 1855 and raised nine children over the next 10 years. However, most of their incredible wealth disappeared with the Civil War. Dorn spent much of it raising, equipping, and supporting an entire Confederate regiment, and he supplied all his enslaved workers, whom he continued to support, to build coastal fortifications. By the end of the war, his wealth was only a small fraction of what it was before the conflict. Too old and too tired to build his entire mining complex anew, he leased it to an Atlanta partnership who had funded their investment with money from Cyrus McCormick, the inventor of the famous reaper, and in time McCormick purchased the Dorn Mining Company outright. Dorn spent his remaining years doting on his family. He died in 1876. His widow lived another 53 years, dying in 1935. The Oak Grove mansion burned to the ground in 1935. (For more information, see Edmonds's "Mother Lode gave birth to McCormick" in the 31 December 2000 edition of the Greenwood Index-Journal, "[Dorn Mine] Mine Information" at heritagegoldmine.com, and "A Brief Survey of Historic Gold Mining in the Carolina Slate Belt" at the Mining McKissick website.) Exceptionally rare, no doubt unique. This correspondence fills a major hole in the history of South Carolina gold mining. At the time of listing, no other original source Dorn mine material is for sale in the trade, and OCLC shows nothing is held by institutions. One Dorn Mine item, a postally used envelope without content was sold for $4,425 by Siegel Auctions in 2018; a similar cover was also sold at a Siegel auction in 1986.

Warren had already performed the first successful rhinoplasty in the United States, in 1835, after a trip to Europe where he observed the work of Dupuytren, Roux, Dieffenbach and others (see Garrison-Morton.com 5743.3); and in 1843 he performed the first operation for closure of complete clefts of the hard palate (see Garrison-Morton.com 5745). .

Philadelphia: Monk's Head, 1901. Limited edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 12mo. (44) pp. Vellum spine, paper over boards, printed label on the upper board. Finely printed letterpress on Van Gelder handmade paper in a numbered editioni of 250 copies. This is number 82. Title page and the following page are hand colored. Some spotting to the first few pages but a very good copy. According to the colophon this is a translation out of the Old Dutch 'for the Pageant'. A handwritten note on the front pastedown reads: "This is the original tale from which the "Miracle" was drawn. E. S. Potter." Not much seems to be known of the Monk's Head Press. Ransom gives Edwin S. Potter as the printer, and dates of activity from 1901-1902, listing this as the first book of the press. He also identifies the author as Brother Geiselbrecht, an Augustinian monk, ca. 1320. Surprisingly rare. .

Description
[Washington, D.C.: January 1872. First edition. Modern blue paper wrappers with added modern endpapers. . 5 in. by 9in. . Some chipping to edges of leaves. Document tape at fore-edge of one leaf. A very good copy of a scarce women's suffrage item. The present report, written by Republican Senator Matthew Hale Carpenter (1824 – 1881), responds to the memorial presented by numerous prominent suffragists including Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Isabella Beecher Hooker, Elizabeth S. Bladen, Olympia Brown, and Josephine J. Griffing. The suffragists' memorial argued that the 1870 ratification of the 15th Amendment, which granted voting rights to citizens of the United States regardless of "race, color, or previous condition of servitude," should also grant women the right to vote. Carpenter and the Senate denied that the 15th Amendment applies to women's suffrage and rejected the memorial.

Philadelphia: Published by Anthony Finley, 1816. Bell, John M.D. Engravings of the Bones, Muscles and Joints. Philadelphia: Published by Anthony Finley, 1816, 1815. $ 400.00 Two volumes. 4to. 275 x210 mm. (10 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches). 108pp.; 123 pp. Illustrated with 32 full-page engravings after designs by the author. Bound in contemporary American sheep, rubbed yet sound; gently foxed throughout. Ex-libris of Dr. Willard I. Myers. First American Edition from the Second London. John Bell was Scotland's most important teacher of surgery and anatomy at the turn of the 19th century and drew large audiences to anatomical lecture theater at the Royal Academy of Surgeons in Edinburgh. A controversy over teaching schedules and access to the lecture hall prohibited him from continuing to teach and for the next three decades he dedicated himself to private practice and research. He is the author of Discourses on the Nature and Cause of Wounds (1793-95), Principles of Surgery (1801) and his Anatomy of the Human Body, which went through several editions. The distinguishing aspect of his works are the illustrations that he included as part of his teaching techniques. A skilled draughtsman, Bell created his own drawings and painting of his anatomical studies, which were produced in a style that was less idealized and more realistic in depiction. "Certainly, they have the immediacy of drawings made in the dissecting rooms of late Georgian Edinburgh. some are quite gruesome and even perverted. . . In their context, they are admirable." The engravings in this work are after designs by Bell and based on the second edition of the book. They are extremely well executed and are presented in a clear and uncluttered manner. The images in the first volume were engraved by Jacob J. Plocher who was best known for his views and city scenes of Philadelphia. William Kneass was the engraver for the plates in Volume 2 and he is best remembered for his engraved portraits and family scenes. Even with the light foxing that accompanies many of the plates, the set is sound and not unattractive. Roberts & Tomlinson, Fabric of the Body (1992) p. 491. Stauffer and Mantle, American Engravers on Copper and Steel, pp. 274, 421. (276).

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1939. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.. First edition of Robert Penn Warren's first novel, the story of a young man's fall from grace during the Kentucky Tobacco Wars. Literary critic, poet, and novelist, Robert Penn Warren contributed to a number of genres with ease. NIGHT RIDER, his first published novel, thematically anticipates his later works: it focuses on life in the US South, moral quandries that lead to tragic irony, and the corruption of leaders, leaving characters to struggle against the inevitable. Warren would go on to win Pulitzer Prizes for both a novel and and for poetry - the only person to have won in both categories. This is an attractive copy of an important work in Warren's oeuvre. 8.25'' x 5.25''. Original grey cloth boards with red text. Original unclipped ($2.50) pictorial dust jacket. 460 pages. Jacket with light edgewear, some sunning to spine; two tape repairs to verso. Binding with a touch of edgewear, a bit of bumping to spine ends. Sharp.
