Description
20/09/1922. Florence Kling Harding’s discovery of her husband’s affair in 1922 with Nan Britton took its toll on her health. In early September 1922 she came down with a serious kidney ailment, and the public was alerted as to the severity of it on September 8 in a medical bulletin, and the eminent physician Charles Mayo was called in. By the time he arrived, she was suffering from sepsis and was falling in and out of consciousness. News of Florence’s illness sparked an outpouring of support throughout the country. It sparked many editorials in newspapers and a rumor that she had passed, which was dispelled. By September 11 her condition had worsened so that, as she later related, she had a near death experience seeing two figures at the end of her bed. Florence insisted she would not die because her husband needed her. As she fought back from what she called the “Valley of Death”, Florence spontaneously relieved an obstruction and required bed care from the nurses. Her condition gradually improved to the point that Dr. Mayo did not feel his service was necessary by October.Typed letter signed as president, White House letterhead, Washington, September 20, 1922, to author and diplomat Charles Underwood Johnson. “I am more than grateful to you for your thoughtful and sympathetic letter of September 19th. I know Mrs. Harding will appreciate, as much as I do, the very great concern which was expressed In her behalf, and I shall be glad to tell her of your letter when she is able to appraise it properly.”

Original cloth, slight edgewear. Fine. First Edition of the first book on microwave transmission. Slater, one of the first American physicists to contribute to quantum theory, "did more than any other person to provide the understanding requisite to progress in the microwave field" (Morse, p. 305). Microwave communication was first used on a large scale during World War II; up until the 1980s microwave relay systems were used to carry telephone and television signals, and in recent times there has been an explosive growth in the use of microwaves by wireless networks and other new telecommunication technologies. Cincinnati, 1876 and 1883: Aticot" Antiquarian Booksellers. Approx. 8 3/4" x 3 3/4" and 8 1/2" x 3/ 3/4" These checks were printed by Krebs of Cincinnati for the Carson City Savings Bank, which was incorporated in 1875. One was issued for gold (1876), another for currency (1883). Since those that could be used for gold were still preferred in the West over currencies in the late 19th century, they often relied on Krebs whose bonds could not easily be counterfeited. As some printers developed high quality fake checks, the stamps and signatures became the primary means of determining legitimacy, Scarce to find both Krebs items together.

Description
[Newburyport]: Newburyport Commercial Press, 1927. Small octavo (19 x 12.5 cm.), 58, [i] pages. Advertisements interspersed. Title from cover. Additional title (page [1]): Tested, Tried, and True. "This book is issued for the benefit of the Ladies' Benevolent Society of the Oldtown Parish, First Church, Newbury"–page [1]. ~ FIRST EDITION. A church collection with nearly two hundred recipes, the majority attributed. The family of the pastor, Charles Sumner Holton (1866-1939), was not reticent: Parson Holton's Baked Beans; Cusque à la crème (submitted by Nina Holton); Madame Holton's Ginger Snaps; Chocolate Cookies (submitted by Mrs. Chas. S. Holton). Reverend Holton started his tenure in May 1897; Ye Olde Newbury Cook Book may reasonably be assumed to celebrate his thirtieth anniversary. ~ Four parish meetinghouses stood in Newbury by the end of the seventeenth century, under the care of clergy in the orbit of Harvard who preached an understanding of doctrine that would eventually become recognized as Unitarianism. The town itself was first organized as First Parish of Newbury, its first meeting house planted on the lower green in Oldtown. A second replaced it in 1647, now located on the upper green, followed in turn by a third and a fourth until a permanent structure of stone was erected in 1806 on High Road, some two miles north. A disastrous fire challenged the achievement called "permanent" in 1868, but the congregation not only regrouped and rebuilt, but also nurtured its own school. In ensuing years, Unitarian theology suffered the inevitable wounds of conservative defection; in 1967 the First Parish Church of Newbury realigned with the relatively newly instantiated United Church of Christ. ~ Stapled, in green paper wrappers with black and red decoration. Very good. Scarce. [OCLC locates three copies; whether or not there is a connection of this title to an Old Newbury Cook Book published by the Ladies' Benevolent Society in 1909 (one copy reported in OCLC; Cook, page 125; Brown 1353) has not been determined; in neither Brown nor Cagle].
