Description
1672. 2d part: Choyce Cases in Chancery. 2d part: Choyce Cases in Chancery. "An Exhibition of Elizabethan Habits, Manners, And Peculiarities" [Court of Chancery]. [Great Britain]. The Practice of the High Court of Chancery. With the Nature of the Several Offices Belonging to that Court. And the Reports of Many Cases Wherein Relief Hath Been There Had, And Where Denied. London: printed by John Streater, Henry Twyford, And Eliz. Flesher, The Assigns of R. Atkins and E. Atkins Esquires, 1672. [viii], 180, [10] pp. Final Table of Cases leaf, from Plaintiff to Z, lacking. Two parts with continuous pagination. Second part has headline title: Choyce Cases in Chancery. Octavo (5-3/4" x 3-3/4"). Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt title and gilt-edged raised bands to spine, endpapers renewed. Light rubbing to extremities, minor wear to corners. Some toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, light soiling, edgewear and early owner signature ("John Ffenwicke") to title page. A handsome copy. $500. * Second edition, one of two issues from 1672. "Like Lambard, Tothill, and a few similar works, this volume is one which those great cases that occur from time to time, and stimulate inquiry into the very foundations of legal science, will occasionally call forth, and it ought, therefore, to be in every public law library. (...) There is a picturesqueness and dramatic interest about them, especially as seen by the half lights in which sitting so far off, we...necessarily view them, that makes them quite entertaining, and, indeed an exhibition of Elizabethan habits, manners, and peculiarities." (Wallace). The period covered by Choyce Cases is 1557-1606. Counting both issues, OCLC locates 10 copies in North American law libraries (Columbia, Georgetown, Harvard, Jenkins, Library of Congress, Northwestern, University of Minnesota, University of Pennsylvania, US Supreme Court, Yale). Wallace, The Reporters 470-471. English Short-Title Catalogue R222499.
