Description
Folio. (8), 112, [i.e. 114: 1-66, (1), 66-112], (1: errata) ll. Title printed in red and black within an engraved architectural border by Matthias Greuter, woodcut coat of arms of Julius Duke of Brunswig, 21 (20 double-page) engravings (sometimes appearing as two single leaves; one is also signed by Matthias Greuter), and numerous woodcut illustrations in the text. Contemporary limp vellum (a bit smutty), with later added supralibros and spine label, from the library of Walter Hawken Tregellas (1831 - 1894), an English writer of historical and biographical works and a professional draughtsman (with his presentation label on the pastdown), and from the Royal Engineers Library (gilt stamp on binding, and small ink stamp on title-page and on a few other places). Some very light browning and marginal dampstains, but a very nice genuine copy.RARE FIRST EDITION of this magnificent work on fortification and town-planning, the first important contribution in the German-speaking world on the subject since Dürer's Etliche Underricht zur Befestigung der Stett (1527). It was to become the standard reference work on the construction of fortresses until there was a decisive change in the manner in which wars where fought. Further editions were published in 1599, 1608, 1705 and 1756.''Speckle writes his treatise from a strongly national motivation as is clear from his preface. He wishes to prove that the Germans are not completely without imagination, and that their invention of printing and of a 'grausam Geschütz' ('fearsome artillery') shows them to be the 'the greatest in the world' in these fields. He attacks, above all, the Italian theorists for their academic disputes, declaring their rules to be outmoded and openly ridiculing their approach ('when someone has no Latin, he cannot understand it, and so has no business to talk about it'). He demonstrates the urgency of fortification, as Dürer has done, by reference to the Turkish threat. Speckle claims to be familiar with fifty or sixty types of fortification, but restricts himself to a few only. He writes in German and avoids foreign words, 'so that every German - such as I too have the honour to call myself - can understand' '' (H.-W. Kruft, A History of Architectural Theory from Vitruvius to the Present, London & New York, 1994, p. 115).In addition to Dürer, whose work Speckle considered very important, he had adopted the work of Francesco de Marchi from Bologna, Della architettura militare, thus proving that he kept abreast of the latest trends. But he was no less a pragmatist, who in his teaching methods took into account whether a fortress was located in flat countryside, in hills or in mountainous terrain. Mathematics and geometry, in conjunction with practical skills and a knowledge of mechanical laws were also the art of building fortresses. Some of his retreats and mountain castles appear on the other hand as fantastic visions of a world that had rid itself of enemies. In a copy of the 1608 edition in the Strasbourg library these castles are labeled by hand and identified as based on reality. In the second part of the treatise Speckle presents plans whose forms are dictated by terrain. He describes inter alia, in great detail, the Turkish siege of Malta (1565) and the rebuilding of La Valetta, and in so doing provides us with one of the most detailed plans we have of Francesco Laparelli's project (cf. J. Zimmer, Daniel Speckle Architectura Von Vestungen, in: ''Architectural Theory from the Renaissance to the Present'', B. Evers & C. Thoenes, eds., Köln, 2003, pp. 511-519).The twenty-eighth chapter of the first part of the treatise contains the essence of Speckle's thinking on town planning. He starts with a description of a regular plan with six bastions, of which he gives a perspective view and which reveals the priority he accords to defensive considerations. He then describes in great detail an ideal type of town plan with eight bastions, in which his political and social ideas are revealed. In the tradition of all military architects of the second half of the sixteenth century, he uses a strict radial pattern. Around the central square are situated the church, royal palace, town hall and staple inn. Religious, secular and economic power are concentrated in this area. The military, on the other hand, are removed to the areas around the bastions. It is interesting that Speckle expressly sets civil law above martial law. Speckle aims overall at a very ordered community: 'mercenaries should be done away with'. Defensive considerations determine the city to the last detail (cf. K. Krüger, Albrecht Dürer, Daniel Speckle und die Anfänge frühmoderner Städteplanung in Deutschland, in: ''Mitteilungen des Vereins für deutsche Geschichte Nürnbergs'', 67, 1980, pp. 79-97; and H. de la Croix, Military Architecture and the Radial City Plan in Sixteenth Century Italy, in: ''The Art Bulletin'', 427/ 4, 1960, pp. 263-290).''Later in the sixteenth century, the instruments and surveying techniques essential to the preparation of ichnographic city plans were made available to an increasingly large circle of northern artists and topographers through a number of publications. One of the most interesting of these books is Daniel Speckle's treatise on fortifications, published in 1589. Speckle's method of surveying, which permitted a ground plan of 'any building, city or castle' to be drawn, is closely related to Hirschvogel's procedure. Unlike Hirschvogel's confusing description of his own invention, however, Speckle's chapter on surveying is a model of clarity and verbal economy. Speckle's straightforward and step-by-step exposition of surveying techniques parallels those of Tartaglia and Bartoli earlier in the century. It permitted any interested artist or architect to learn and apply them easily'' (J.A. Pinto, Origins and Development of the Ichnographic City Plan, in: ''Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians'', 35, 1, 1976, p. 49).In the Architectura are also described several instruments of his invention, especially his set of six reduction compasses (cf. I. Schneider, Der Proporzionalzirkel. Ein universelles Analogrecheninstrument der Vergangenheit, München, 1970, pp. 31-32).Daniel Speckle (Specklin), a native of Strasbourg, was the son of the eminent carver Veit Rudolph Speckle. After completing his apprenticeship as a silk embroiderer, he left Strasbourg in 1552 to go on a study tour, which took him to the fortress of Komorn and Györ in Hungary. By 1555 he was in Vienna, where he first trained as a master mason and later became an architect. The influence of the chief builder in Vienna, Hermes Schallautzer, could well have played a role in influencing Speckle's decision to concentrate in the future on the construction of fortresses. He soon achieved success in this field and was employed as head of constructions for various fortress projects. He visited Antwerp in 1560 and subsequently travelled to Denmark, Sweden, Poland, and Russia. In 1564 he returned to Strasbourg, married and worked again as a silk embroiderer. Having been involved with the construction of fortifications in Düsseldorf and Regensburg in 1567, he was once again in Hungary, this time with his patron, the Imperial general Lazarus von Schwendi, where he was instrumental in the planning of fortifications in Varaždin, Kashau, and Tokai. During this time he must also have acquired a reputation as a mapmaker, since as a result of Schwendi's connections he was commissioned in 1573 by Archduke Ferdinand to produce a map of Alsace, which he worked on until 1576. He also was engaged in producing an overall plan for fortifying the city of Ulm. To this end he drew up extensive plans and models, as well as a builder's journal, the first of its kind. There followed a journal for Colmar (1579) and a building code for Basle (1589). By now he had also produced elaborate pieces of work for the city of Strasbourg, including a large-scale wooden model of the city. On October 5, 1577 Speckle was appointed City Architect with an annual salary of 250 Guilders, 6 tuns of wine and 1000 bundles of wood. With the authorization of the city council he continued to work for other domains and towns, such as Schlettstadt, Ensisheim, Colmar, Basle, Veldens, Belfort, Cologne, Heidelberg, and Hanau. After being sent on a study trip to Antwerp, he brought back several plans of the fortifications of towns in Brabant and Holland. In September 1587 he submitted his Architectura to the council of Strasbourg. Finally, the city of Heilbronn requested his advice and later sent him the ground plans of a planned fortress for his appraisal, but he was not able to air his opinions on it, as he died on October 18, 1589, aged 53 (cf. K.E. Mayer, Die Lebensgeschichte des Strassburger Stadt- und Festungsbaumeisters Daniel Specklin, Stuttgart, 1928, passim; and A. Description
1853. First Edition. (DOUGLASS, Frederick) (GRIFFITHS, Julia). Autographs for Freedom. Boston / Cleveland / London: John P. Jewett / Jewett, Proctor, and Worthington / Low, 1853. Small octavo (5 by 7-3/4 inches), original blind-stamped, gilt-lettered brown cloth. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000.First edition of a powerful volume of nearly 40 works by leading abolitionists, together in print for the first time, co-edited by Frederick Douglass and Julia Griffiths, containing the first publication in book form of Douglass' novella, The Heroic Slave, his only work of fiction, invoking the defining leadership of fugitive slave Madison Washington in the 1841 successful slave rebellion on the Creole, a core event in the history of the ""revolutionary Black Atlantic."" With engraved frontispiece and two full-page engraved illustrations, especially rare in original unrestored cloth. The legendary 1841 slave revolt on the Creole, led by fugitive slave Madison Washington, was ""one of the most successful slave revolts"" in American history: renowned, as well, ""for the impact it had on the North-South sectional conflict in Congress, interpretations of the legal standing of slavery on the high seas, and American-British diplomacy"" (Harrold in Journal of African American History V102). Frederick Douglass often spoke of Washington and the Creole in speeches throughout the 1840s, where he ""kept its memory alive as a historical precedent for slave rebellion… Douglass left those public audiences with a dire warning: 'There are more Madison Washingtons in the South, and the time may not be distant when the whole South will present again a scene something similar to the deck of the Creole.'"" In early 1853 Douglass sat at his desk to write The Heroic Slave—his only work of fiction—a novella that reflects ""his personal state of mind, his evolving ideas on violence, and the national crisis he sought to influence… The turn to fiction to expose the full danger of the fugitive-crisis was also a logical progression in his evolution as a man of words."" The work was prompted by his vow to write an original piece for Autographs for Freedom, co-edited with British abolitionist Julia Griffiths: ""an extremely important friend and coworker in Douglass' life"" (Blight, Frederick Douglass, 248-49, 171).With Heroic Slave, Douglass ""gave a profound voice"" to the rebel slave (Blight, 249). Madison Washington, leader of the historical Creole revolt, was a fugitive slave who had escaped from Virginia to Canada. In 1841 he returned ""to rescue his wife from slavery… upon reaching Virginia, he was apprehended and re-enslaved. On October 25 he was among the 38 slaves of Thomas McCargo who boarded the brig Creole at Richmond,"" headed for the New Orleans slave markets. That November Washington commanded 18 male slaves in a revolt on the Creole that ""left one of the slaveholders dead, one mutineer mortally wounded."" He ""ordered an experienced white passenger to navigate the brig to Nassau… [where] slaves not involved in the mutiny were immediately freed under British law… Washington and the other 18 rebels also gained their freedom when the local British authorities determined that they had no jurisdiction over the crimes of mutiny and murder on the high seas."" Soon afterward Washington ""mysteriously passed from the historical record and into legend"" (Harrold in Antislavery Violence, 90-91). ""The Creole rebellion was indeed a core ""story of the revolutionary Black Atlantic'"" (Sinha, Slave's Cause, 412).In Douglass' novella, Washington is ""a man of transformative eloquence as well as action… he conquers foes with courage, character, and with the power of the word. He also conquers with the sword as he must."" David Blight, Douglass' biographer, writes: ""would that Douglass had attempted more works of fiction; he possessed a stunning ability with narrative. By the force of his will, from constant discipline, and from the help of his friends, especially Julia Griffiths, he had emerged by the mid-1850s as a versatile and accomplished writer, one deserving a place eventually in that era's literary American renaissance"" (Frederick Douglass, 250-51). First edition: precedes the first English edition (with sole London imprint of Sampson Low). Co-edited by Douglass and Griffiths, ""the 39 pieces of short fiction, poetry, essays and correspondence in the 263-page anthology were envisioned as tools to construct a wider and politically more potent antislavery alliance than any in which the two abolitionists had previously participated. In the diverse composition of its collection of authors and antislavery themes, Autographs for Freedom was both a cultural and political tool designed by them to help assemble a more powerful antislavery coalition"" (McKivigan & Pattillo, in Journal of African American History, Winter 2017). With engraved frontispiece, individual works with printed facsimile signatures, preface by Julia Griffiths, dated in print, ""Rochester, 1852."" Also included are works by black abolitionists such as James Monroe Whitfield, James M'Cune Smith, and William Gustavus Allen, along with those by white abolitionists such as William Seward, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Catherine Beecher, Lewis Tappan, Charles Sumner and Gerrit Smith. With engraved frontispiece; two engraved plates. Heroic Slave earlier appearing in Douglass' newspaper in March 1853 (Blight, 248). Sabin 28835. Blockson 9204. Bookplate. Small owner inkstamp.Interior generally fresh with foxing, mild rubbing with trace of soiling to cloth. An extremely good copy, exceptional in original unrestored cloth.

"Frederick Parker Walton's Historical Introduction to Roman Law is a magisterial work that was part of the movement for the revival of Roman law teaching in the Anglo-American world." -- Introduction, iii "`With the exception of the Bible there is no book which has so profoundly affected western civilization as the Corpus Juris.' With these suggestive words Dean Walton begins his clear and interesting summary of the history of the Roman Law before Justinian. Intended as an introduction to the study in Montreal of the Roman law in its modern form, and especially as it appears today in the law of the Province of Quebec, it is equally valuable for one who is to learn the modern Civil law and for one to whom Roman law is of interest only as a wonderful and effective example of the human intellect applied to the complex affairs of an imperial civilization. Dean Walton describes clearly and convincingly not only the history of important legal doctrines, but also the constitutional history of Rome so far as it had to do with the making of law. The author's learning is evident, but not obtrusive; his grasp of the subject is complete; his enthusiasm is, even to a devotee of the Common Law, almost contagious. Of especial value to a student of English law are his description of the growth of the commercial law at Rome, his explanation of the ante-Justinian sources of law, and his theory of the development of the jus gentium. In publishing in so handy a form just the facts about the history of Roman law that we most need to know, Dean Walton has deserved the thanks of the profession." -- J[oseph] H[enry] B[eale], Jr., 17 Harvard Law Review 294 1903-1904 FREDERICK PARKER WALTON [1858-1948] studied classics at Oxford, received his LLB at the University of Edinburgh and became an advocate in that city. He lectured in Roman law at the University of Glasgow before he was.

Especially significant because it had a direct influence on legislation, this "Bible of the Reformers" is a model of investigatory pamphleteering in the cause of representative democracy. The long struggle to transform Great Britain into a modern state was effected primarily through the gradual expansion of the electorate, which was accomplished though the Reform Acts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In the earlier era, as the growth of industry shook the traditional agrarian economy dominated by the landholding aristocracy, the accompanying campaign to transform government by weaning power from traditional loci was conducted through a mass of books, pamphlets and other printed matter. The Extraordinary Black Book, which went through several editions between 1820 and 1832, was the most important of these. As the editor explained: "government has been a corporation, and had the same interests and the same principles of action as monopolists. It has been supported by other corporations; the Church has been one, the Agriculturists another, the Boroughs a third, the East-India Company a fourth, and the Bank of England a fifth: all these, and interests like these, constituted the citadel and out-works of its strength, and the first object of each has been to shun investigation. We have, however, rent the vail..." (Advertisement to the New Edition, iv-v). Printing and the Mind of Man calls this "a massive compendium of all the abuses, electoral, ecclesiastical, legal which they sought to abolish" 1967:180.

London: Fanfrolico Press, 1928. Very Good/No Dust Jacket, As Issued. THE LAST ELIZABETHAN of the MACABRE A stunning private press production of the complete works of Thomas Lovell Beddoes, the 19th-century 'Physician-Poet' whose obsession with mortality earned him a cult following. Edited by the legendary Edmund Gosse, this edition is the definitive monument to a writer who Lytton Strachey called 'the last Elizabethan' Published by the avant-garde Fanfrolico Press in their final year of operation, the set is a masterclass in gothic book design, utilizing the grim aesthetics of the 16th century to frame Beddoes' haunting 19th-century verse. PHYSICAL FEATURES: Quarter-cloth over distinctive patterned boards with original printed paper spine labels; a tall, imposing 4to format (10.25 inches). Features a frontispiece portrait and textual illustrations throughout, meticulously reproduced from Hans Holbein's The Dance of Death-the perfect visual counterpart to Beddoes' preoccupation with the grave. +++ Press Heritage: A cornerstone title from the Fanfrolico Press, founded by Australian rebel Jack Lindsay to challenge London's moral standards with high-art, bold-content publishing. +++ Scarcity: Limited to only 750 numbered copies (#251). CONDITION: Near Fine -- An exceptionally well-preserved set. The cloth-backed patterned boards are tight and square with minor scuffing to the edges. Internals are clean with light, even toning and faint staining to the text block edges. Spine labels are intact and legible. A superior example of a set often found with heavy wear. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- Beddoes lived a life as dark as his poetry, eventually committing suicide in Switzerland by poison. His work-particularly Death's Jest-Book-is a bridge between the Romantic era and the Decadent movement. This Fanfrolico edition rescued him from obscurity, presenting his 'thought-provoking linguistic tapestry' in a format that mirrors his own anatomical and spiritual curiosities. SUBJECTS: Private Press, Gothic Poetry, Hans Holbein, Dance of Death, 19th Century Literature, Jack Lindsay, Limited Edition, Illustrated Books, Fine Press.

Lucifer: A Study in Morphology, pp. 55-137, 11 lithographic plates (1882); The Life-History of Hydromedusae, pp. 357-430, 8 plates (1886); and Report on the Stomatopoda, pp. (3), 116, 16 plates (6 tinted) (1886). Cover corners bumped, edges worn, spine ends frayed, binding tight, pages unmarked, plates bright and clean. Very good. WILLIAM KEITH BROOKS (1848-1908) entered Harvard and studied under Louis Agassiz, receiving his PhD in 1875. A year later he became a junior faculty member at Johns Hopkins University when it opened, teaching and researching marine biology. In 1878, Brooks founded the Chesapeake Zoological Laboratory which moved around each summer from Crisfield, Maryland, and Hampton, Virginia, to Beaufort, North Carolina, Jamaica, and the Tortugas. The studies described in this volume were performed by both investigators at the Laboratory. Brooks was employed at Johns Hopkins University from 1876 onward, beginning as an associate and promoted to Professor of Morphology in 1889. In 1894 he succeeded H. Newell Martin as head of the Department of Biology. Brooks performed studies on invertebrates, particularly germ cells, and found evidence to explain variation among species due to ancestral heredity as well as Charles Darwin's theory of pangenesis. He trained many of the prominent embryologists of the country. Brooks' Lucifer is a detailed study of the complete life cycle of this deepwater shrimp, illustrated with fine lithographic plates made from his drawings. This paper provided the first description of direct observation of the complete life cycle: adult-embryo-larva-adult. In Life-History of Hydromedusae, Brooks traces every stage of the life cycle of these small transparent medusae, with spectacular lithographs that highlight the apperance of the living animals. Brooks' Report on the Stomatopoda is based on examination of larval and adult forms of various species of mantis shrimp collected in tow-nets by the HMS Challenger in the 1870s. The Challenger Expedition was a grand tour of the world covering 68,000 nautical miles organized by the Royal Society in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh. EDMUND BEECHER WILSON (1856 - 1939) earned his doctorate at Johns Hopkins in 1881. He served as professor of biology at Bryn Mawr College from 1885 to 1891 and spent the balance of his career at Columbia University where he was successively adjunct professor of biology (1891-94), professor of invertebrate zoology (1894-1897), and professor of zoology (from 1897). Wilson is credited as America's first cell biologist. In 1898 he used the similarity in embryos to describe phylogenetic relationships. By observing spiral cleavage in molluscs, flatworms and annelids he concluded that the same organs came from the same group of cells and concluded that all these organisms must have a common ancestor. Wilson published many papers on embryology, and served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1913. For his volume, The Cell in Development and Inheritance, Wilson was awarded the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal from the National Academy of Sciences in 1925. The American Society for Cell Biology annually awards the E. B. Wilson Medal in his honor. Wilson's Development of Renilla traces the embryology of the sea pansy, a colonial cnidarian found in warm marine environments. The plates show segmentation of the egg, development of the larva, the free-swimming embryo, and young sessile colonies. More recently, luciferase and green fluorescent protein have been isolated from Renilla, both used widely in the study of cell lineage during development. Both Wilson's Renilla and Brooks' Lucifer were communicated by T. H. HUXLEY ("Darwin's bulldog") for publication by the Royal Society.
