Description
An extraordinary, one-of-a-kind historic collectible, beautifully framed. This is the ORIGINAL Western Union Cablegrama dated and sent from Havana, Cuba on April 8, 1937 to General Franco, Salamanca, Spain. It is sent from Elicio Arguelles, head of Franco's Nationalist Committee in Cuba, to Franco in Salamanca. The message translates into English as follows:THE SPANISH NATIONALIST COMMITTEE SENDS TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS AS MEDIATION FOR THOSE RECONQUERING SPANISH SOILWhat makes this unique piece truly extraordinary is that beneath the printed message, written in ink, in his instantly recognizable hand, is a three-line notation:"Salamanca" / Spain 1937 / Earnest HemingwayThe background is this: The sender, Arguelles, is the father of Hemingway's close friend of the same name, Elicio Arguelles, Jr., the fisherman in the famous photograph of himself standing beside Hemingway with the 900-pound Marlin they caught. As was customary at the time, the sender also received a copy of the telegram. His copy went to the son who in turn gave it to Hemingway to sign. This is an absolutely one-of-a-kind collectible, of considerable historical significance. A major collectible.

Churchill Book Collector (United States)
Description
New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a signed U.S. first edition, only printing of Winston Churchill's fifth book – his final book chronicling his adventures as an itinerant soldier and war correspondent. The young Churchill almost certainly signed this copy in late 1900 or early 1901 during his first North American Lecture tour before he returned to England to take his first seat in Parliament. Condition of this signed copy is good plus – sound, original, and complete despite some typical wear and defects. The red cloth binding remains square and tight with bright gilt and no appreciable color shift between the covers and spine. Overall scuffing is most pronounced to the extremities, and there is a small, dark stain on the front cover. A single, faint, jagged vertical line – one on both the front and rear covers – seem to indicate that the boards were once a bit creased, but the boards nonetheless remain rigid and straight, with no fragility or warping. The contents are respectably clean and complete. The frontispiece, tissue guard, and maps are all intact, including the folding map following the text, though the map was previously mis-folded, as is typical, resulting in some fraying to the edges. The contents show moderate age-toning and the frontispiece was previously creased. Spotting is trivial, primarily confined to the first and final leaves and the fore edges. The gilt top edge is a bit dulled and scuffed, but still distinctly gilt. The outer corners of the front free endpaper recto and final free endpaper verso show tape stains. This copy came to us from a private collection, where it long resided. The tape stains result from a well-intentioned but ill-conceived effort to protect the book. The book was long ago fitted with a homemade glassine wrapper, the inner flaps of which were secured by tape – which of course was not archival and stained the pages against which it lay. The glassine was on the book long enough to have toned and brittled with age and the tape – as evidenced by the stains – to have toned, stiffened, and lost adhesion. We find no previous ownership marks – only the author’s signature. Churchill’s signature, “Winston S. Churchill” in black ink on the upper front free endpaper recto, is consonant in location, style, and characteristics with other Churchill signatures in books signed during his first North American Lecture tour. The ink remains distinct, with no significant age-spreading or toning.   In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted in South Africa between descendants of Dutch settlers and the British. As an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, Churchill swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Soon thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armored train. His daring escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, winning his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900. His first North American lecture tour swiftly followed. Churchill's lecture tour of the United States and Canada was intended to improve his finances at a time when MPs received no salary. Churchill arrived in New York on board the Lucania on December 8, 1900.    Ian Hamilton’s March, Churchill's second and final Boer War book, published in the U.S. on 26 November 1900, was perfectly suited to his lectures. This U.S. first edition had the further advantage of being available for sale in the United States concurrent with Churchill’s tour. Nonetheless, this is only the second signed copy of the U.S. first edition of Ian Hamilton’s March we have encountered, perhaps owing to the small print run. PLEASE NOTE THAT A CONSIDERABLY MORE DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THIS ITEM IS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Reference: Cohen A8.2, Woods/ICS A5(ca), Langworth p.61.

Description
Collection of 856 incoming letters, 957 pages, plus 90 pieces of ephemera, dated 1867-1939, however, only two letters are dated outside the main period of correspondence, the years 1881-1887. The letters are handwritten, in ink, in legible hands, (with no retained mailing envelopes).Description of Collection: As might be expected, a large part of the correspondence is written by Prince Edward Island merchants. In particular the following gentlemen wrote multiple times: Bernard D. Brown, Lyne Valley, PE (23, 24p); J. W. Chisholm, Souris East, PE (23, 28p); Wm. F. Commeau, Souris East, PE (28, 30p); Doyle & McBride, Souris, PE (49, 49p); S. Farquharson, Souris East, PE (31, 37p); Patrick Kelly, Montague, PE (46, 55p); Donald McEachen, Souris East, PE (19, 28); J. H. McQuaid, Souris East, PE (27, 31); Morson & Morgan, Cardigan's Bridge, PE (112, 149p); John P. Sullivan, St. Peter's Bay, PE (7, 7p). Besides P.E.I. merchants, other merchants from various Canadian provinces wrote to Connolly, in particular the merchants from Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, which wrote multiple times were: From Quebec - John Baird & Co., Montreal, QC (8, 9 p); Henry Chapman & Co., Montreal, QC (12, 12p); J. & E. Collas, Point St. Peter, Gaspe, QC (8, 9p); Crane & Baird, Montreal, QC (4, 4p); S. Greenshield's & Sons, Montreal, QC (5, 5p); and John Hope & Co., Montreal, QC (10,10p). From Ontario - James Goldie, Guelph, ON (4, 4p); W. P. Howland & Co., Toronto, ON (2, 2p); C.H. McLaughlin, Stratford, ON (7, 7p); Joseph D. Saunby, London, ON (4, 4p); Stark Bros., Toronto, ON (3, 3p); and W. Worden, Toronto, ON (6, 6p). From Nova Scotia: - Geo. E. Forsyth & Co., Halifax, NS (3, 3p); Jerusalem Warehouse, Halifax, NS (14, 18p); and John Tobin & Co., Halifax, NS (4, 4p). From New Brunswick - A. McMullin, St. John's, NB (5, 5p). Besides his local business in P.E.I., and his national business with fellow Canadian merchants in other provinces, Connolly also had far reaching business activities with suppliers or customers in the United States and in Europe. From the United States and Europe the following merchants wrote on multiple occasions: From the United States - J. C. Bates & Co., Boston, MA (9, 10p); Faxson, Williams & Faxon, Boston, MA (6, 6p); Hathaway & Co., Boston, MA (3, 3p); C. F. Listman & Co., Chicago, IL (7, 7p); Middleton & Co., New York, NY (7, 7p); B. W. Underwood, Chicago, IL (4, 4p); and Woods, Perry & Co., Boston, MA (3, 3p). From Europe - Blankenheijm & Nolet, Rotterdam, Holland (5, 6p); Budgett, James & Branth, Bristol, England (17, 17p); Davis, Kemble & Co., London, England (9, 9p); and Reinach's Nephew & Co., London, England (4, 4p).There were also many other merchants who corresponded with Connolly, either once or twice, with the main years being 1884-1887. These merchants were from P.E.I., other Canadian provinces, or other countries. We have not listed every person who wrote a letter, rather we have counted the number of letters per year for those merchants that only wrote once or twice: 1867 (1,1p); 1882 (1, 2p); 1883 (1, 2p); 1884 (103, 113p); 1885 (84, 87p); 1886 (25, 26p); 1887 (87, 88p); 1939 (1,1p); and Undated (15, 18p).There are also 90 pieces of ephemera including invoices, receipts, accounts, telegrams, etc. Of the letter writers, the three main correspondents were Morson & Morgan (112, 149p), who were successors to Owen Connolly & Co., at Cardigan Bridge, P.E.I; Doyle & McBride (49, 49p) of Souris, P.E.I., with Doyle possibly being a former partner in Owen Connolly & Co.; and Patrick Kelly, of Montague, P.E.I. who was a former partner in Owen Connolly & Co., he writes 46 letters (55p).Owen Connolly (1820-1887)Owen Connolly was born in 1820 in Donagh, County Monaghan, Ireland. He immigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1839 and was employed on the farm of a Mr. Smallwood, in Lot 28, where he remained for 2 years before buying a farm on the Monaghan Road. In the early 1840's, Connolly married Anne Hughes, also a native of Ireland. After his marriage, Connolly opened a store for country trade. In 1852, he moved to Charlottetown where he opened a liquor and grocery store on Dorchester Street. In 1864, Connolly built a new store on the corner of Dorchester and Queen. He later established businesses in Souris, Cardigan, and Montague. Connolly's stores catered largely to the rural trade, selling staple products such as flour, tea, sugar, tobacco, molasses, soap, and liquor. Merchandise later included dry goods and clothing. In the summer of 1870, Connolly entered into partnership with Patrick Kelly and Joseph Doyle to form Owen Connolly & Co. This partnership lasted until 1881, which is about when the present collection, offered here, starts.Owen Connolly was a prominent member of Charlottetown society. He was the first agent on the Island for the Merchant's Bank of Halifax and when the Union Bank of Prince Edward Island (later the Merchant's Bank of PEI) was established in 1860, Connolly was appointed director and eventually, Chairman of the Board. He served as a Justice of the Peace and played an active role in exhibitions and other public occasions in Charlottetown. Also, Connolly distributed coal and blankets to the deserving poor during the winter. He died on 27 December 1887 at the age of 67. Except for one letter of the Connolly Estate (1939) this correspondence collection ends in 1887. At the time of his death, Owen Connolly owned buildings in Charlottetown, Souris, Montague Bridge, Cardigan, and Summerside as well as farms in Charlottetown Royalty, St. Peter's, Morell, and Lot 48. His large estate was administered by three appointed Trustees: Lieutenant Governor A. A. MacDonald, Chief Justice W. W. Sullivan, and future Premier Fred Peters. In his will, Owen Connolly established a bursary fund for the education of deserving Irish Catholic males. The first of the Owen Connolly Bursaries were granted to five students in 1881. The original trustees of the Connolly served together until 13 December 1897 when Peters moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1912, MacDonald died, leaving Sullivan to administer alone. The original trustees were not replaced until 27 October 1913. A petition was presented to the Provincial Legislative Assembly and an Act to Incorporate the trustees and increase the number was introduced to the House in Session in 1918 by Sir Charles Dalton, MLA. The Act was passed after a short debate. In 1968, due to the increasing costs connected to maintaining the various properties of the Connolly Estate, the real estate was disposed of and the proceeds invested in accordance with the Trustees Act. The Connolly Estate is still in existence.

Description
Yosemite National Park [and] Boston: Virginia Adams [and] Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. First Edition. Comb binding. Very good. Adams, Ansel. Folio size, 70 pp., inscribed by Ansel Adams. Ansel Easton Adams (1902-1984) was noted as a perfect balance of photographer and environmentalist. Most of us have seen Ansel Adams' photographs and have been awed by their beauty; he helped to elevate photography to an art comparable with painting and music, and equally capable of expressing emotion and beauty. He told his students, "It is easy to take a photograph, but it is harder to make a masterpiece in photography than in any other art medium" (n.b., info from Wiki). This series of photographs focus mainly on the mountains of Yosemite: Cathedral Rocks, El Capitan, Half Dome, Cathedral Spires, and more. As Adams wrote in his Foreword: "The great rocks of Yosemite, expressing qualities of timeless, yet intimate grandeur, are the most compelling formations of their kind. We should not casually pass them by for they are the very heart of the earth speaking to us...". Inscribed by Adams on the flyleaf "For John G. Loncaric / with regards, as always / Ansel Adams" (note that the inscription itself ("To [name]" appears to us to be in a different hand; the written "with regards..." and the signature are Adams'); John and Nancy Loncaric are listed on the accompanying menu from a dinner held at The Ahwanee for a "First Reunion, Retired Employees". John Loncaric must have, therefore, been employed in the Valley; although we could find little trace of him in our online search, we did find his wife hosting a variety of social events at the Ahwanee, indicating they lived in the Valley for some period of time. ___DESCRIPTION: Book is comb-bound with a pictorial front cover (the back cover plain white), the inscription, as set forth above, on the flyleaf, followed by the Foreword (written by Adams) and then by the twenty-four black-and-white reproductions of Adams' photographs, accompanying each photograph is a short, two-party essay by Adams, the first part being his thoughts on the subject, the second being the technical notes for that particular photograph, the essays being on the recto of each leaf and the photographs on the verso printed on glossy paper, following the photographs and essays are fourteen pages dealing mostly with photographic techniques ("The Esthetic Factors", "Optical Problems", etc.), along with his "Recommendations" and closing with a Bibliography; folio size (14 1/2" by 12"), 70 pp. The menu from the Retirement dinner features a wrap-around Adams' photograph on the front and back with a quote on the back from "The Trees of the Yosemite", inside on the left is a list of attendees, including John and Nancy Loncaric, on the right the evening's menu; folio size (13" by 9"). ___CONDITION: A very good copy overall, front and back covers with some light soil and some overall wear, the plastic comb binding with a few small cracks but still solidly holding the pages, the interior pages clean and bright, and other than the inscription and Adams' signature on the flyleaf entirely free of prior owner markings; the front cover detached from the comb binding about three inches at the top and about an inch at the bottom, and the interior pages with some light creasing at the fore-edge corners; even with its faults, still a very good copy. The Ahwanee menu a bit better than very good, clean with light overall edgewear. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Concord, New Hampshire, 1859. Single two-page letter measuring 5 x 8 ¼ inches. Folded, else Fine.. A letter from Joshua Reed Giddings (1795–1864) written from Concord, New Hampshire, to A. H. Barnes, Esq., in Dover. Giddings was a prominent abolitionist, lawyer, and congressman from Ohio. He was famously censured by the House for his support of the mutiny of enslaved people aboard the slave ship Creole. Here, Giddings writes: “It would give me pleasure to visit Dover and to lecture before your association but I cannot now engage to do so on the day mentioned in your letter. The most that I could now say is I may probably visit you about that time. I must await some other peoples arrangements before I engage for that day. I may be able to say with more certainty during the next week + will write you again in a few days.” Though it is unclear who Barnes is or what his ‘association’ is, Dover had both an anti-slavery society and an anti-slavery newspaper, both founded in the mid-1830s.
