Description
Leyden: G Potuliet, 1733. A later prtg. (first is 1618).. Full contemporary calf.. A very good copy; frt. jt. split but holding.. 4to. [32], 1 - 496, [20] pp. According to Jarcho a, '... bold original medical thinker, who converted the ancient gospel of humoralism into a new and valuable doctrine of fluid imbalance.' De Ricci cites this as a 'remarkable treatise' that finally disposed of the old ideas on hysterical or uterine suffocation : '... the symptoms commonly called hysterical occurred in both men and women. ... since in an hysterical attack the entire body is seized with convulsions and becomes stiff, the nerves are of necessity diseased. ... Lepois quoted the case of a certain maiden ... who was subject to violent hysterical attacks, despite a normal menstrual cycle. He likewise pointed out that hysteria occurred in young women .... Lepois went a step further; he eliminated the uterus and upper abdominal organs as the offending structures .... The attack began in the central nervous system and in the 'cerebral meninges of which the nerves are a continuation' .' The text is about evenly divided into two sections. The first deals with neurological and head injuries of all kinds. The second with diseases and ailments of the chest. This edition is the first to have Boerhaave's complimentary preface. Le Pois was educated at Padua and returned to France as consultant physician to Charles III. He was the author of several books but his principle work is contained in this anthology of his consultations. Jarcho, Heart Failure, chap. 6; Blake p. 265; De Ricci, p. 307.
