Description
Boston: George W Light, 1839. First Edition.. Full contemporary calf.. Good, with some spotty foxing; joints strained.. 8vo. There is a frontispiece of the author. Although published in America it appears that Claxton was English. The book, however, is filled with anecdotal information about his life in America and, more importantly, his scientific work as an instrument maker in the United States. He was one of a handful during this time period. There is an excellent text illus. of a vacuum pump he constructed as well as commentary on the business of early American science. S & S # 34993.
