Description
1969. First Edition. Signed. SENGHOR, Léopold Sédar. Élégie des Alizés. Lithographie Originale de Marc Chagall. (Paris): Éditions du Seuil, (1969). Slim quarto, five loose gatherings in original cream paper wrappers, uncut and unopened, original glassine. $2800.Limited first edition, number 405 of only 450 copies, of Senghor's Élégie des Alizés (Elegy for the Trade Winds), with an original full-page three-color lithograph by Chagall, signed and dated by him in 1974 on the title page. From the collection of Joseph Liverant, a fellow Russian Jewish emigré and friend of Chagall.Internationally recognized poet, politician, and cultural theorist, who served as the first president of Senegal, Léopold Sédar Senghor avoided the Marxist and anti-Western ideology that had become popular in post-colonial Africa, choosing instead to form a close relationship with France and the Western world. He was instrumental in the cultivation of postcolonial aesthetics and black African consciousness. His poetry reflects an ""all-embracing humanism which envisions the solidarity of all men, with each nation making its contribution in its own special way to a 'universal civilization"" (Albert S. Gerard). Critics continually point to his ability to synthesize elements of Western and African experience and to evoke universality in the imagery of his verse. ""Senghor is not merely a Frenchified African who tries to give exotic interest to his French poems; he is an African who uses the French language to express his African soul"" (Ulli Beier). Chagall's wonderful illustration was printed by Fernand Mourlot, who ran a lithography press in Paris, where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró, Léger and of course Chagall, came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent medium. Text in French. Cramer 82. Sorlier 587. From the collection of Joseph Liverant, a fellow Russian Jewish emigré and close friend of Chagall. Liverant and Chagall both fled Europe in World War II, Liverant to Canada and Chagall to the United States. After the war, both acquired residences in Provence, where shared social circles, similar ages, and a mutual love of Yiddish combined to forge a lasting bond of friendship between the two.A bit of wear, two small ink marks to rear panel of fragile original glassine; wrappers and interior fine.

Description
London: Publishing Office, 1852. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Three bound volumes, 13" x 8.5", covering the full years of 1846 (624 pp + index), 1850 (624 pp), and 1852 (816 pp). All bound in original three-quarter leather and marbled boards -- all with considerable wear to boards, with scuffing and staining to leather, much of the marbled paper worn or torn away. 1846 volume has a cracked rear hinge and 1852 has a broken front hinge, otherwise internals are very good. The Builder was founded in 1842 or 1843 (sources differ) by Joseph Aloysius Hansom (1803 -1882), a British architect and inventor of the Hansom cab. Architect George Godwin (1813-1888) took over as editor in 1844 and developed the magazine into "the most important and successful professional paper of its kind with a readership well beyond the architectural and building world.... Each weekly issue carried detailed reports of new building works and architectural debates plus articles on history, archaeology, and the arts. Above all, The Builder was known for its campaigns for health and housing reform. Godwin wrote first-hand reports on slum overcrowding and its results.... He supported architectural remedies such as improved housing by charitable trusts, public baths and wash-houses, and pavilion-plan hospitals, but equally he believed in improvement through individual perseverance and effort.... As editor, Godwin is reputed to have written much of each issue himself, assisted by a staff of no more than five. He took a particular interest in the quality of the illustrations used, relying mainly on wood-engravings, but later introducing photo-lithography and other photo-mechanical processes. Among the illustrators he relied on were H. W. Brewer, John Brown, Worthington G. Smith, and Benjamin Sly" (ODNB entry on Godwin). Renamed Building in 1966, the magazine is still published today and is described in Wikipedia as "one of the United Kingdom's oldest business-to-business magazines.

CONTENTS: History of Pediatrics by Fielding H. ARTHUR F. ABT (1898-1974) was the son of Isaac A. Abt, and Professor of Pediatrics at Nortwestern University Medical School. ISAAC ARTHUR ABT (1867-1965) graduated from the newly established Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1891. He attended ward rounds with William Osler, studied pathology under William Welch, and history of medicine under Fielding Garrison. This was followed by 2 years of study in Europe with prominent physicians in several countries. In 1894 he returned to Chicago, his hometown, working at Northwestern University, Michael Reese Hospital, and Cook County Hospital. He served as chair of pediatrics at Northwestern from 1909 to 1939. In conjunction with Michael Reese Hospital, he founded the Sarah Morris Children's Hospital, regarded as the equal of the Harriet Lane Home of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Abt was president of the American Pediatric Society, honorary member of the German Pediatric Society, and editor of the monumental System of Pediatrics published in 1923. In 1944 he published his autobiography, The Baby Doctor. His collection of Jacobi's works and other historical medical books is now in the Joseph Brenneman Library of Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. FIELDING HUDSON GARRISON (1870 – 1935) was an acclaimed medical historian, bibliographer, and librarian of medicine. Garrison's An Introduction to the History of Medicine (1913) is a landmark text in this field. Garrison joined the staff of the Army Medical Library as a clerk in 1891 (the AML was to become the National Library of Medicine many years after Garrison's death). Garrison was assigned to index medical literature. In this he worked closely with John Shaw Billings. Garrison wrote the first comprehensive treatise on the history of medicine and "gained recognition as the foremost American authority on the subject" (according to the Dictionary of American Biography). From 1930, Garrison was lecturer in the history of medicine and librarian of the Welch Medical Library of the Johns Hopkins University.

Description
New York: Random House. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1939). 1st American Edition (see Notes) Early Printing. Hardcover. [minor shelfwear, slight wear to cloth at top of spine, vintage bookseller's label on rear pastedown (Larry Edmund's [sic] Book Shop, Hollywood); jacket has some shallow chipping along top edge of front panel (slightly impacting the title), a few other little edge-nicks, and a little fading along the spine]. (B&W photographs, endpaper maps) Auden and Isherwood's journal of their trip through war-torn China, undertaken in 1938 at the joint request of their English and American publishers. "Their itinerary included Hong-kong, Canton, Hankow, Shanghai, the Yellow River war zone, and the Southeastern front in Anhwei Province. On their travels they met many of China's leading personalities -- the Generalissimo and Madame Chiang Kai-shek, Chou En-Lai, the German military advisers, Miss Agnes Smedley, Mr. Peter Fleming, and a host of others. Auden's contribution includes a long poem and a series of sonnets. Isherwood supplies a day-to-day account of four months' varied and exciting travel, based upon a diary kept alternately by both authors. The photographs were taken by Auden." Despite the chipping, this is a well-preserved example of the uncommon jacket -- which, like most uncoated-paper Random House jackets of the period, is very susceptible to wear and tear. [NOTE that the binding on this copy is brown cloth with black printing on the spine only; although I've seen this binding referred to as a second printing, this copy bears no printing statement (first, second or otherwise). I have tagged it as an early printing based on several attributes: (1) the unclipped jacket has the original printed price of $3.00 (the price at which the book was originally published); (2) all the Auden/Isherwood books listed on the rear jacket flap were published prior to 1939; (3) the rear jacket panel quotes several London reviews -- although this doesn't necessarily prove anything, since the book was published in England several months earlier than in America, and therefore those same review excerpts may well have appeared on the jacket at the time of its first printing.] .
