Description
London: H G Bohn / Prtd. for the Author, 1843 / 35. Second Edition - as issued.. Original publisher's cloth.. A very good copy; rebacked; some spotting throughout.. Large 4to, There are 99 plates total (includes the frontis. in each volume). An important book that appeared just as architects were attempting to adapt older English styles to modern necessity. The intro. to the volumes contains an analysis or summary of the relation between 'Old English' architecture and its social context. Goodwin presents 32 designs that include lodge houses, parsonages, park entrances, villas, laborers' cottages etc. . Each is illustrated with an isometric and plans and elevations. The supplementary Cottage Architecture volumes that are bound in with this set have designs for dairy farms, cottages, and an inn (!) . This copy also has an interesting association in that it is from the Delano - Roosevelt family. Inserted in volume 1 at plate 38 is a pencil note from Leila B Delano - granddaughter of Warren Delano Jr and cousin to President F D Roosevelt - stating that the family residence in New York State was based upon a design in the book [plate 38; design #13] and goes on to identify changes that were incorporated into the plan. A elevation sketch of the original house is in the FDR Presidential Library. The note refers to the forty room Italianate mansion "Algonac" designed by A J Downing for Warren and Catherine Delano that was erected in Newburgh, NY. It burned in 1916. Archer 90.1 & 91.3; see also Ujifusa, Barons of the Sea, for an extensive commentary on the Delano family.
