Description
1861. Very Good. Selwyn, Jasper Henry, Admiral (1820-1901). A.L.s. to an unnamed recipient, probably Latimer Clark. Tring, Hertfordshire, November 28, 1861. 2pp. 178 x 112 mm. Small hole punched in upper margin. Provenance: Latimer Clark. Regarding the demonstration of a "model" before Charles Bright, George Saward, and others. After his retirement from the Navy, Selwyn invented a process for separating ores from rock with bichloride of sulphur in a bath of salt solution, and also investigated the transfer of electricity by light rays, and the production of fuel from nitrogen in the atmosphere. Origins of Cyberspace 195 (incorrectly giving Selwyn's first name as "Th."). .

Description
1839. Broadside, 27 x 41 cm. Light to moderate browning and soiling, Very Good. A most unusual North Carolina offering, advocating the election of John Worth over that Congressional district's symbol of the 'political class,' Abraham Rencher: the latter "has been in Congress ten years,- and can any one point out any thing that he ever did there? All know that he has been a mere cypher." Hummel and AI suggest an 1839 publication date, but this seems unlikely: Congressman Rencher declined to be a candidate for re-election in 1838. The likelier publication date is 1840, when the now-rested Rencher returned to the political fray after having served ten years in Congress, and won the election. FIRST EDITION. Hummel 1506 [1- UNC]. AI 58898 [1- NcU]. OCLC locates four copies under two accession numbers, as of December 2012.

About Fine
Description
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. No binding. About Fine. [Los Angeles]: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, [1943]. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) black-and-white double weight matte finish photo. About fine. In anticipation of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's 20th anniversary in 1944, a LIFE magazine photographer came to the studio in July or August 1943 and staged this group photo which included many of MGM's stars and contract players. Studio executive Louis B. Mayer is at front center. Amongst the top stars not present that day were Clark Gable (serving with the Army Air Forces), Lana Turner (having a baby) and Judy Garland (on a war camp tour). Color images were also made and have been printed over the years for many MGM-related events. This, with the original text on verso, is an original 1943 release print.

Description
[Salt Lake City]: [Sainsbury & Johnson], 1892. Cabinet card[10.5 cm x 15 cm] gelatin silver print on a dark gray mount [15 cm x 20 cm] with the title in the lower left corner of the image. Gentle rubbing to the corners of the mount with five discolorations near the extremities from tape removal. Image has nice contrasts. Image of Eagle Gate from the south looking up East Temple [State] Street with a Salt Lake Railroad street car and a man standing in the background. Shown is the second iteration of Eagle Gate with the widened base and the new piers labeled 'Eagle Gate.' This photo is not labeled C.E. Johnson, but we believe the title writing of this photograph is a match to other Sainsbury & Johnson images. Charles Ellis Johnson (1857-1926) was a Mormon photographer known for his work both in Utah and around the world. He grew up in St. George, Utah, and gained an interest in botany and theater. While operating a drug store in Salt Lake City, he started dabbling in photography and opened a photo studio. He photographed actors and actresses at the Salt Lake Theater, including some artistic nudes. He took photos of Utah attractions, and in 1903 traveled through the Ottoman Empire to take photos for the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. In 1917 Johnson moved to San Jose, California where he continued operating a photo studio. "Johnson was one of the most prolific and enterprising photographers on the Mormon scene. He photographed thousands of people in his modern state-of-the-art studio in Salt Lake City." - Nelson Wadsworth 'Set in Stone Fixed in Glass' (pg. 274).
