Description
London: Smith, Elder, & Co, 1853. First edition. Near Fine. With the publisher's catalogue dated January 1853 at the end of volume one. A Very Good+ copy, a clean and appealing set overall. Three volumes, octavo (121 x 191 mm). Collating complete except for the half-titles: [4], 324, [12 pp., publisher's catalogue]; [4], 319, [1]; [2], 350, [2] pp. Attractively bound in late nineteenth-century half red morocco over marbled boards. Top edge gilt. Minor edgewear. Some light occasional foxing and a few dusty finger marks. Leaf O2 in volume one with a small amateur tape repair to margin (not touching text). Small modern ink ownership stamp to lower pastedown of each volume. Published under the pseudonym Currer Bell, Villette was Charlotte Brontë's third and final novel released during her lifetime, following Shirley (1848) and her massively influential debut Jane Eyre (1847). Villette, a masterpiece in its own right, "powerfully portrays a woman struggling to reconcile love, jealousy, and a fierce desire for independence. Having fled a harrowing past in England, Lucy Snowe begins a new life teaching at a boarding school in the great capital of a foreign country. There, as she tries to achieve independence from both outer necessity and inward grief, she finds that her feelings for a worldly doctor and a dictatorial professor threaten her hard-won self possession...Brontë's last novel was written in the wake of her grief at the death of her siblings. It has a dramatic force comparable to that of her other masterpiece, Jane Eyre, as well as a striking modernity of psychological insight and a revolutionary understanding of human loneliness" (Vintage). Since its publication, Villette has inspired a broad range of writers, from George Eliot to Kazuo Ishiguro; in the Common Reader, Virginia Woolf called it Brontë's "finest novel" and praised the emotional depth and poetry of the writing (p. 224). Sadleir 394. Near Fine.

Description
New York: Howley; Haviland and Co, 1898. Folio, 4 pp. Covers split, stamp from a Kalamazoo, Michigan piano store near publisher information, otherwise near fine, with the lithographic illustration very bright and attractive, very good overall. Very good.. An illustrated sheet for “The Famous Black Moguls,” one of the opening choruses from A Trip to Coontown, the musical comedy written, produced, directed, and performed by Bob Cole and Billy Johnson during the 1897–1898 theatrical season. The show is recognized as among the earliest full-length musical productions created and staged under African American creative control. The work evolved from Cole’s earlier sketch At Jolly Coon-ey Island, written for Black Patti’s Troubadours, and its title parodied the popular musical A Trip to Chinatown (1891). Production records identify “The Famous Black Moguls” as an early Act I number performed by the character Captain Fleetfoot, placing it among the introductory musical selections used to establish the show’s principal characters and theatrical setting. The show premiered in South Amboy, New Jersey, on September 27, 1897, and later appeared in New York at the Third Avenue Theatre in April 1898. Theater historian Thomas L. Riis and co-authors describe the production as: “performed, directed, and produced by African Americans, an astounding feat in an era where few independent theaters could even consider taking a chance on such a production. Unfortunately, the play—like so many other nineteenth-century African American documents and artifacts—was lost, and scholars could only make conjectures (based mainly on newspaper reviews) about what it looked and sounded like. ”[1] Peter Lefferts, in “A Chronology of the Career of Bob Cole: Materials for a Biography,” found a program from April, 1898 that identifies “The Famous Black Moguls” was the first song in the production.[2] We are unable to identify the artist for the illustration. We find one copy of this sheet in OCLC, at the British Library Reference Collections, and nothing else from the original show in commerce at the time of writing. Overall a very scarce and attractive sheet from an important production with little surviving ephemeral record. [1] Krystyn R. Moon, David Krasner, and Thomas L. Riis, “Forgotten Manuscripts: A Trip to Coontown,” African American Review 44, no. 1/2 (2011): 7–24. [2] Peter M. Description
Detroit: Facing Reality Publishing Committee, [1963]. First Edition. Quarto (28cm); mimeographed sheets (rectos), saddle-stitched into yellow mimeographed card covers; 59pp. Light wear and dustiness to covers, ink date to upper right corner of front cover, with subtle toning to text edges; contents clean; Near Fine. A late work from Facing Reality, a small faction of C.L.R. James loyalists that remained following the split in the Johnson-Forrest Tendency in 1955. The group was led by Martin Glaberman in the U.S. and C.L.R. James in England. The contents consist of a series of letters from James to Glaberman (who he addresses as "Marty"). "The letters put forward the idea that the changes in the world since Lenin's time have not merely changed the objective situation which Marxists face but have also changed the working class and the conceptions and ideas of people all over the world. The threat of atomic weapons, the experience of two world wars, a major world-wide depression, fascism and the development of capitalist production itself -- all have combined to create universal hostility to present day society, in developed and undeveloped countries alike...The Marxist organization must be able to recognize this drive toward a new society, record it and align itself with it in a newspaper. The kind of preparation necessary for producing a successful newspaper and the kinds of discipline and attitudes which must be attained before a newspaper can become possible are detailed" (from the preface). A significant collection of correspondence, uncommon in commerce. OCLC notes 10 holdings, of these, only 7 in U.S. institutions.

Description
France: Arcadie Productions, 1975. Collection of promotional ephemera from the 1975 French film, including a program, ten lobby cards, and two black-and-white reference photographs. Text in French. One of ten films directed by Alain Robbe-Grillet, ostensibly about the target of a kidnapping plot hiding out at a high society brothel, but in reality an exercise in image making, fourth wall breaking, and the exploration of Robbe-Grillet's usual concerns of eroticism, voyeurism, and doppelgängers. One of his most commercially successful films, down mostly to the presence of "Emmanuelle" star Sylvia Kristel, far more prevalent in the marketing material than in the actual film. Lobby cards (10): 11.5 x 9.25 inches. Very Good plus. Photographs (2): 7 x 5 inches. Near Fine. Program: 7.25 x 10.25 inches. 17 leaves. Near Fine in saddle-stapled wrappers. All material housed together in an original glassine envelope as issued.
