First Edition. 52 two-, three- or four-color tinted lithographed views after Louis Kurz. 52 text leaves describing each view (with a duplicate of one text leaf and the missing text leaf supplied in early manuscript facsimile). With a later typed list of plates inserted. Without title page, as issued. Early manuscript annotations to the plates. [With:] Letterpress broadside prospectus for the work, tipped in at the front. Oblong folio. A marvelous collection of views of Chicago - drawn, described, and published by Chicagoans - providing the best visual description of the city before the destruction wreaked by the Great Fire of 1871. The scarce prospectus for the work, present here, asserts that Chicago Illustrated would provide views giving "striking evidences of the City's improvement and enterprise." It was promised that there would be twenty-five total parts, "with each to contain at least four tinted Lithographic Views" for a total of 100 or more views, giving "a comprehensive picture of this marvelous city." Ultimately, only thirteen parts were issued, each with four plates, for a total of fifty-two views. The plates and/or the letterpress description of the plates are as follows: 1) Chamber of Commerce. 2) Tremont House. 3) Great Central Depot / Great Central Depot Grounds With Entrance to Harbor. 4) Second Presbyterian Church. 5) Post Office Building / Custom House. 6) Wabash Avenue Methodist Church. 7) Rush Street Bridge From State Street. 8) Michigan Avenue From Park Row. 9) The Opera House / Crosby's Opera House. 10) Twelfth Street Bridge / View from 12th Street Bridge. 11) Church of the Holy Family / Jesuite Church. 12) The Lake View House / View from Lake House. 13) Court House / Court House Square. 14) Corner State and Washington Streets. 15) Trinity Church. 16) Chicago Harbor. 17) La Salle Street, from Court House Square. 18) Col. Wood's Museum. 19) Universalist Church. 20) Lake Street Bridge. 21) Chicago University. 22) Sherman House. 23) North Presbyterian Church. 24) Corner Lake and State Streets. 25) Douglas Monument. 26) Briggs House. 27) Second Baptist Church. 28) Junction of the Chicago River. 29) The Chicago "Crib." 30) Plymouth Congregational Church. 31) Soldiers' Home. 32) Corner South Water and Clark Streets. 33) Union Stock Yards. 34) Hough House. 35) First Congregational Church. 36) Illinois Central Round House. 37) Great Fire on Lake Street. 38) Third Presbyterian Church. 39) Mr. Vicker's Theatre. 40) Michigan Avenue from the Lake. 41) M.S. & N.I. & C. & R.I. & Pc.R.R. Depot. 42) Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church. 43) Armory and Gas Works. 44) Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Freight Depot. 45) Corner Lake Street and Wabash Avenue. 46) Eighth Presbyterian Church. 47) Corner Lake and Wells Streets. 48) Park Row. 49) Chicago Water Works. 50) First Baptist Church. 51) Marine Bank Building. 52) View from Van Buren Street Bridge. The publishers, Otto Jevne and Peter Almini, had been best known as decorators specializing in ornamental paintings and frescos. They teamed with the talented lithographer, Austrian-born Louis Kurz, to form the Chicago Lithographing Company, under whose imprint this work was issued. Kurz and two other lithographers, Otto Knirsch and Edward Carqueville, created the lovely views, which show a wide variety of buildings and places in Chicago. Included are views of the Chamber of Commerce, the Great Central Depot Grounds, Tremont House, the Customs House, Michigan Avenue, LaSalle Street, Chicago University, the Union Stock Yards, and the Water Works. A great variety of structures, parks, and commercial enterprises are shown, including churches, banks, busy docks and rivers, parks, theatres, the opera house, hotels, railroads, entertainments, etc., showing a bustling city that had become a great center of commerce and culture. One of the colored illustrations dramatically shows a building being engulfed by the "Great Fire on Lake Street" of 1866. The text was written by James W. Sheahan, a journalist from the Chicago Tribune. Chicago Illustrated was originally issued in monthly parts (costing $1.50 per part) from January 1866 to January 1867, when the project was ended. This set is notable for containing the original front wrapper for Part 6 (June 1866) and for also containing the original printed prospectus. The wrapper shows views of Chicago past (a Native American family by the lake) and present (an elegantly dressed man and woman walking along the river), and also shows a view of Jevne and Almini's Chicago Lithographic Company offices, a four-story building on South Clark Street. Their office was located in the district destroyed by the 1871 fire which, along with the limited number of sets of Chicago Illustrated that were created, contributes to its rarity. While not part of his personal collection, this copy passed through the hands of legendary bibliographer and book dealer Wright Howes after having been deaccessioned by the Chicago Historical Society. A note on the front free endpaper notes that this copy was purchased from Howes, and then on the verso of the same free endpaper is a note in Howes' hand. This copy was purchased by Francis J. Gerty (1892-1994), prominent Chicago psychiatrist and collector, whose library is now in the Library of the Health Sciences at the University of Illinois, Chicago. A beautiful and rare visual tour of Chicago a few years before the Great Fire. Howes J108; Graff 3747; Sabin 12623; Chicago Ante-Fire Imprints 1047

Description
Hammersmith: Doves Press, 1914. ONE OF 200 COPIES ON PAPER (and 12 on vellum). 236 x 165 mm. (9 1/4 x 6 1/2"). 203 pp. LOVELY DOVES BINDERY-STYLE DARK BLUE CRUSHED MOROCCO, VERY INTRICATELY GILT AND INLAID, BY WESLEY D. BAKER (verso of front free endpaper stamped in ink: "Baker Bindery for James Cummins, Bookseller"; rear turn-in stamp-signed in gilt: "20*WDB*08") covers with wide frame of inlaid pink morocco Tudor roses (a total of 88 inlays on the covers), the blossoms linked with sinuous gilt stems with delicate leaves, all on a background stippled with tiny stars, raised bands, spine compartments similarly adorned, with inlaid rose at center, a trio of leaves at each corner, and a background of stars, gilt lettering, gilt-framed turn-ins with cornerpieces featuring an inlaid rose, gilt branches, and stars, white watered silk pastedowns and endleaves, all edges gilt. Printed in red and black. Tidcombe DP-36; Tomkinson, p. 58. A PRISTINE COPY. This is a refined book full of lovely love poetry, offered as an object so gorgeous that its Doves Press imprint has to take an uncharacteristic second place in importance; this is especially true because the binding, which clearly derives from Doves Bindery models, is a convincing perpetuation of that firm's superb achievements. Ever the perfectionist, Cobden-Sanderson personally selected and arranged the poems in the present anthology only after much considered effort. He noted in his journal on 31 July 1913: "I have put 'Bright Star' first, for I wish the feeling of the last sonnet to accompany the reader throughout; and at the end revert to Keats' first sonnet, and so leave the poet as it were on the peak in Darien." Our binding was done by Wesley Baker in 2008, using tools created by Roy Petit (responsible for the roses) and Stewart Fields (who cut the leaf tools). Baker became interested in bookbinding while in college, and attended workshops in the Northeast U.S., but is largely self-taught. From Alabama, he has adapted the traditional techniques used in England to the climate of the Deep South, where high temperatures and humidity require a different method of gold tooling than would be used in London. The present binding represents the latest attempt we know of to carry on in any thoroughgoing and convincing way the great tradition created by Cobden-Sanderson at the Doves Bindery at the center of the Arts & Crafts Movement..

Description
London: Richard Bentley, 1838. First edition. First issue, with no border around final plate and correct page listing in list of "Embellishments." Two octavo volumes (7 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches; 191 x 117 mm.). [i]-xix, [xx, blank], 288 pp; [i-ix, [x, blank], 263, [264, printers imprint]. Engraved frontispiece portrait in volume I, and twelve engraved plates by George Cruikshank. The frontispiece to each volume hand-colored (volume I. "Joseph Grimaldi" & Volume II. "Grimaldi's kindness to the Giant"). Extra illustrated by the insertion of forty-eight engraved plates, eighteen of which are hand colored. Six of the hand colored plates are by F.W. Pailthorpe; six by Isaac Cruikshank? and two by George Cruikshank--all three of these artists are famous Dickens illustrators. Bound ca. 1920 by Bayntun, stamp-signed in gilt "Bayntun. Binder. Bath. Eng." on rear silk endleaves. Bound in full forest green crushed levant morocco, covers triple-ruled in gilt surrounding a thin inlaid border of black morocco. Spines with five raised bands, decoratively bordered in black and gilt in compartments, gilt lettering, gilt board edges and decorative gilt turn-ins. Front and back doublures of each volume with a superb figure and background inlaid in various colored morocco's. The four inlaid designs include "Gaby Grin, The Eccentric Clown," and three other characters from the book. Green watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. Spines very slightly darkened otherwise very fine. Housed in the original, fleece-lined, green cloth slipcase. A spectacular example of a pair of early Bayntun bindings, typical of the firm's first-rate work and use of the best materials. Joseph Grimaldi (1779-1837) was considered "the most celebrated of English clowns" famous for his pantomime skills (Britannica). Purportedly an autobiography edited by Dickens, scholars have debated the extent of his authorial role: Forster claims he wrote the introductory chapter, Eckel says the last, and Bentley argues a significant portion of the book. It is for a discerning reader to parse Grimaldi from Dickens, nevertheless it makes for an entertaining read. George Bayntun (1873-1940) was the founder of Bayntun Bindery. Trained by apprenticeship with the Taylor family, Bayntun opened his own book bindery in 1894 dedicated to using traditional hand-crafted techniques and high-quality materials. The Bath-based firm acquired the Rivière Bindery (also based in Bath) in 1939, transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery," which is still in existence and family owned. Gimbel B64. Eckel pp. 140-2.

Description
New York: New Directions, 1961. Hardcover. Fair/Fair. 8vo; green cloth with black cloth spine lettered in yellow; dust jacket (worn and chipped). Fireside Theatre Book Club Edition as noted on jacket. Laid into this copy is a program from the fireside Theatre's production in February 1963, starring Bette Davis, Margaret Leighton, and Patrick O'Neal. The play served as the basis for a memorable film (1964) directed by John Huston, starring Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, and Deborah Kerr. This copy is from the library of Bryan Sheedy, with his ownership signature, dated 1963 on the front flyleaf. Additionally signed (from the bottom up) on the same page by Tennessee Williams. Sheedy bought and ran a guest house in the Turks and Caicos and, over the years, befriended literary figures, Williams among them. Apparently a wide-bodied, larger than life figure, in the look and manner of a modern day Falstaff, he was known to have a large library of inscribed literary first editions (see New York Times travel piece on Sheedy from 1998). Unfortunately, the Turks and Caicos is not the best place to store a collection of books, and Sheedy's copies tended to be (judging by the ones we have), well, on the "sheedy" side. This one was spared the water damage that affected some of the other books, but has suffered curious little puncture wounds to the upper and lower corners of the front board. Unlikely that these are from a chained iguana such as the one that is depicted in the play; one would need to consult a herepetologist. In any case, one of the more difficult titles to find signed by Tennessee Williams, who was generous when it came to signing books. An interesting copy. Sold as is.

Description
Bordeaux: R Brun, 1721. First Edition.. later marbled bds... A very good copy; old ownership stamp on frt. pastedown.. 12mo. There is one fldg. eng. plate. A 'disgusting outrage' is how Perceval characterised his incarceration for madness in the early 1830s. He was forced into asylums on three separate occasions between 1831 ans 1833. He was in the 'care' of a Dr. Fox near Bristol. The experiences related in this memoir were typical of the treatment of the day. As a result of his experiences Perceval spent the remainder of his life seeking to redress the conditions and protect those who were unjustifiably confined. This is an important memoir and a remarkable copy of the book. Poggendorff I, 500; DSB III, 484-'86; Roberts Cat. p. 83 - ' very rare '.

New York: St. Martin's Press, 2022. 2nd Printing. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Fine. 6x1x9. Signed by author. Signed by author on half-title page without inscription. 2nd printing. An exceptional copy. 2022 Hard Cover. 296 pp. Soon to be a major motion picture starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Academy Award winner Bong Joon-ho. Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there's a mission that's too dangerous―even suicidal―the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. On a routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, his fate has been sealed. There's a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties. The idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they face being recycled into protein to feed a hungry colony. Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse, and the native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, which has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7.
