Brentano taught political economy at Berlin and several other places. In this position he was a champion of trade unions as mechanisms to effect social change. What was presented as worker's question, i.e., the problem of overcoming political radicalism engendered by the issue of wages and compensation, in theoretical and ernest political discussions of the day was, Brentano believed, the overriding issue in political economy. The book offered here was a response to a request from his publisher for another edition of his Arbeitergilden der Gegenwart (his earliest theoretical work). Brentano suggested a new book, offered here, addressing the issues of trade unionism and political power in contemporary society. This was an important book in its day. It had profound impact upon informed debate and social policy for the the then recently unified German nation. New Palgrave I, p. 275.

As in the case of this work on Velasquez, other in the collection dealt with Degas, Picasso, Rodin, and others. These art texts would have been the kind of reading for the aristocratic classes' children in pre-Revolutionary Russia. Very few have survived. This copy has wear but is still in tact with some loss of corners but no loss of text.
