First edition, posthumously published, of this beautiful book, a collection of fairy tales, including the famous story “Kumo no ito” [“The Spider’s Thread”]. Akutagawa (1892-1927), is today most famous for having written the story “In the Grove” which was the basis for the classic film Rashomon by Kurosawa. Fine copy of an example of luxurious Japanese bookmaking.

36 pp. Small 8vo (170 x 105 mm.), late 19th-century brown morocco-backed marbled boards, spine gilt. Paris: Chariot & Joullain, 1775. A scarce priced auction catalogue, which is, according to the Getty Provenance database, incorrectly attributed by Lugt (and the inscription on the present book’s title-page) to Lempereur (1701-79), a Parisian jeweler — not to be confused with his son, the collector Jean Baptiste Denis (1726-96). This anonymous sale very probably consisted of the estate of a man with a similar surname (see Lugt Marques, 1740). A contemporary annotator has added all prices. The catalogue describes 252 lots, including 18 paintings (by Lemoyne, H. Robert, Largillière, etc.), 169 drawings (by Maratti, Rubens, Jordaens, C. Vanloo, Greuze, Fragonard, Callot, Watteau, etc.), 56 lots of prints and books of prints, and nine sculptures. Nice copy. Engraved bookplate of G[eorges] P[annier] (1853-1944), the Parisian art dealer and collector of sale catalogues, and stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of title. ❧ Lugt 2444. 3 pp. Small 8vo, modern calf-backed marbled semi-stiff boards (spine slightly rubbed), spine gilt. [Paris: 1769]. An interleaved and annotated copy of this rare catalogue. Amand (1730-69), winner of the 1756 Prix de Rome for his Samson and Delilah (now at the Landesmuseum in Mainz), studied under Jean Baptiste Marie Pierre and became a member of the Académie in 1767. He is very probably the “Jean François Amand or Aman” known to be working in Rome in 1759. From a printed note at the end of the catalogue, we learn that Amand died during a stay in Rome where he was a resident artist of the king. This catalogue, fully priced and totaled on the interleavings, describes the possessions of Amand in 17 large lots of paintings (some by the artist), sketches, easels, portfolios of drawings, and books. Very good copy; no example in North America. Engraved bookplate of Henry Pannier (1853-1935), the Parisian art dealer, and stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of the manuscript title-page. ❧ Benezit, Dictionary of Artists, Vol. 1, p. 387. London, 1861. Very Good. Bright, Charles Tilston (1832-88). A.L.s. to Latimer Clark. London, January 31, 1861. 2pp. 178 x 110 mm. Remains of mounting on verso of second leaf. Provenance: Latimer Clark. Bright was engineer-in-chief of the Atlantic Telegraph Company, formed by himself, Cyrus Field, George Saward, and J. W. Brett in 1856 for the purpose of manufacturing and laying the first transatlantic cable. Bright superintended the laying of the first complete Atlantic telegraph cable in 1858, receiving a knighthood for his services even though the cable failed a few weeks after its installation. In 1861 Bright went into partnership with Latimer Clark, with whom he developed improved methods of insulating telegraph wires; the two men also wrote an influential paper, "On the formation of standards of electrical quantity and resistance" (1861), which led to the British government's adoption of fixed electrical standards. Bright's letter to Clark dates from the early days of their partnership; it discusses the possibility of finding a office in the west end of London for their business, known as Bright and Clark. (LONDON TRAVELOGUE). ALS. 4pg. London. June 2, 1856. A lengthy autograph letter signed that is a travelogue of London; the writer mentions both Dickens works, Queen Victoria and the Crystal Palace: we feel as much at home in the Golden Cross as if we had always lived here. I dont know whether you remember, but the immortal Pickwick set off on his travels from this very spot. Its wide windows looking out upon the Strand, and Mrs. Gardners kindness make us like it very much. I have so much to tell you dear Minnie, that I dont know where to begin, for we are out sightseeing all day long, and tired we get sometimes. One day, I was seated in our little parlor (the same, by the way, which your mother had) when the door was opened and in walked Uncle and Joe. You can imagine how delighted we were to see them. Uncle looks very well & Joe ditto. They left the ladies in Paris and they all are to sail on the 21st of June, so with Uncle, Aunt & Lizzie Greene we feel quite at home, but we shall soon all separate. The first Sunday we were here we went to Westminster, where we attended service, and beautiful the music sounded through those mouldering arches, each stone of which seems to be marked with age. As we sat in the Poets Corner you may imagine we could not listen very attentively to the sermon, we were too much engaged in examining the queer old monuments. We afterwards saw the tomb of Mary Queen of Scots & many others of equal interest. London has been very very full and it has been quite amusing to drive in Hyde Park & see all the nobility in their superb equipages with footmen, flunkeys, tigers & etc. all in livery, looking as proud as so many Alexander Selkirks monarchs of all they survey. My Lords and My Ladies; we meet at every turn, and very common looking people many of them are. London is full of singing birds now. Her Majesty gave a charming little concert the other evening where only Jenny Lind, Grisi, Alboni, Clara Novello, Bosio, and half a dozen birds of no less note, sang. We went to the Opera the other evening, and had a very pleasant time. One part of the performance I highly appreciated, that each lady has a lovely bouquet at her seat. Mr. Peabody, who gave us our seats, said that he found a lady never refused flowers. Piccolomini made her first appearance, a bewitching little actress and sweet singer. The ladies all go in full dress, we saw many fine necks but few pretty faces. Of course we have been to the worlds wonder, Crystal Palace, and have been charmed and wonder-struck, as so many before us have been with its orange-groves and fountains, birds & flowers, Alhambra & Egyptian courts, all that is most exquisite in art & nature brought together under that glass roof. Nothing could surpass it but you will see it yourself & be as enchanted as we were. The letter has mailing folds and is in fine condition.
