Irvin McDowell and was present at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Toward the end of the war, he left the army to work as a mining engineer in New York, taking the position of President of the Everett Iron Company. After some time working for the United States Geological survey, he served as Director of the United States Mint from 1885 to 1889. Following that, worked as a private consulting geologist to western mining and railroad interests. Condition Folds, minor foxing, mounting remnants on verso. Description
26/03/1815. In 1815, Berlin had been liberated from Napoleon for just 2 years, and the Palais am Wilhelmsplatz in Berlin was a key aristocratic residence near the Wilhelmstrasse, which was becoming a hub for government and high society. This area was crucial for military leadership and elite housing near the Brandenburg Gate, often used by Prussian royal families and high-ranking officials during the post-Napoleonic era.Composed just days after Napoleon Bonaparte returned to power in France (March 1815) and Prussia had reason to fear another invasion, this letter offers a glimpse into the private concerns of the Prussian royal family at a moment of major European upheaval. Despite the looming political crisis, the correspondence reflects the everyday workings of aristocratic patronage, property management, and family influence within the Prussian court.Princess Charlotte, Autograph letter signed, March 26, 1815, to Prince Friedrich of Prussia, just 6 days after Napoleon's arrival in Paris for his famed 100 days.""Esteemed uncle, A gray eternity has passed since my eyes last gazed upon your gentle countenance, I feel anxious, and I long to see you again. Two matters urge me today to burden you with my lines; firstly, to find out about your health and how my uncle is doing; and secondly, it is a request to you on behalf of Ms. von Kleist, who would so much like to live in some rooms in your unused Palais at the Wilhelmsplatz. Aunt Hußen has already written to you in this regard, and you didn’t know whether the King would allow it. Now I received a letter from Papa yesterday, who told me that he cannot grant the request as it concerns the Johanniter Palais and is therefore at the disposal of his brother Heinrich; so he leaves it up to you, and as one can see, he will not mind; and is it not true that you are not using the whole large building at all and that you will heed my request, all the more so since it is your aunt Auguste’s wish? I am counting on your generosity and kindness, my one and beloved uncle, and I am waiting for a favorable response; as I am kissing your gracious hands in my mind until it can soon be done in actuality – your Charlotte""

Description
London: T. Woodward, 1735. FIRST EDITION. Woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, rebacked with spine label; interior incredibly crisp and clean, a fantastic copy. First edition of this very interesting book, considering the author’s background. Morgan uses his own experiences as a physician to educate the reader on medical topics and situations such as sudorifics, labor and newborn challenges, fermentation, the heart, and the “mechanical effects of medicines in general” with a focus on how to treat different ailments based on one’s personal constitution. He shares helpful medical advice on circumstances such as strengthening weak newborns (“just dipping the child every morning in cold water, and presently taking it out again”) and how to restore milk in nursing mothers. Morgan (d. 1743) was a Welsh deist, dissenting minister, doctor of medicine, freethinker, and religious controversialist. He was ordained in 1714 and became minister of Burton two years later and subsequently of Marlborough; in 1720 he was dismissed from this last post for his growing unorthodoxy. He then took up the study of medicine and produced several books on that subject, including the Philosophical principles of medicine (1725), The mechanical practice of physick (1735), and Letter to Dr. Cheyne in defence of the “Mechanical Practice” (1738). Morgan is chiefly remembered, however, for his deistical tracts. He was one of the pioneers of historical criticism of the Bible, particularly of the Pentateuch. He was also particularly critical of the Jewish religion and the Old Testament. Morgan believed in the corruption of human nature and defended suicide for the "weary or satiated with living." His criticism of the Scriptures centered on the fact that so many different interpretations are possible and are accepted by so many different and sincere believers. Traditional religion, therefore, is not infallible but only probable, as is all history. Priestcraft, which instituted superstition, enthusiasm, and finally persecution, is the culprit for the erroneous notion of the infallibility of a catholic church. Reason and tolerance are the only cures (encyclopedia.com). Blake, p.313; Wellcome IV, p. 179.

Bookseller catalogue presenting a complete run of exhibition materials produced by the Art & Project gallery in between their celebrated numbered bulletins from its opening in September 1968 through 1978. As shown through these documents, the gallery proprietors Adriaan van Ravesteijn (1938-2015) and Geert van Beijeren (1933-2005) quickly pivoted from “architectural research” to the championing of conceptual and minimalist art. Although the 156 Art & Project bulletins are celebrated and oft cited, these mailings, cards, etc. recorded herein remain largely undocumented. Description
This is a beautiful photograph of Egk , taken at the piano. He is seated and facing the camera with serious expression. It was taken in his late years, as his hair is white. He is formally dressed in suit and tie. The beauty of the black and white picture lies in its aesthetic, as he is seated at a grand piano with light-filled windows at his back and his reflection is caught in the raised cover of the grand piano. He signs on the lower white margin in a large hand, "Werner Egk." A very artistic image. When radio broadcasting became available to the public, Egk immediately realized its importance as a mass media and developed operas and radio plays. At the beginning of the 1930s, Egk turned his interest towards ballet and opera. In 1935, he premiered his first opera "Die Zaubergeige "("The magic violin"). His opera "Peer Gynt" is based on Henrik Ibsen's play.

(12 x 9 1/2"). 81 pp. (including 15 photographic facsimiles).Facsimiles of the manuscripts for "Narcissus" edited and with an essay by David R. Smith. Distinctive marbled paper boards, enclosed in the original textured heavy inner folder and matching slipcase, paper labels on volume and case. Frontispiece portrait by Leonard Baskin. Printed in red and black, with very wide margins, on elegant Fabriano paper. In mint condition and IN THE ORIGINAL CARDBOARD PACKING CONTAINER. This finely produced book examines the history and significance of Conrad's famous preface, which may be the best-known critical statement in English concerning modern fiction. About writing "Narcissus" and its preface, Conrad said, "After writing the last words of that book, . . . I understood that I had done with the sea, and that henceforth I had to be a writer. And almost without laying down the pen I wrote a preface, trying to express the spirit in which I was entering on the task of my new life." Both an emotional testimonial and a critical analysis, the preface "was the first (and remains the major) expression of [Conrad's] critical theories and his belief in his art." Smith presents a careful bibliography of the various forms of the preface, and he writes a perceptive 30-page commentary on the document's importance. Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was a sculptor, book-illustrator, wood-engraver, printmaker, graphic artist, writer, and teacher. He founded the Gehenna Press in 1942 while still a student at Yale (the name coming from a line in Milton's "Paradise Lost": "And black Gehenna call'd, the type of Hell"). The press has published more than 100 fine books and certainly must be considered one of the most successful private presses ever, given its longevity, its consistently high aesthetic achievement, and the unusual size of its output..
