A near fine copy; some light rubbing the joints.
Description
Paris: J B Bailliere, 1852 - 59. First Edition.. Contemporary half leather and marbled boards.. A near fine copy; some light rubbing the joints.. 4to, I - xix, [3], [3] - 823 pp.; II - [4], 80 pp. + 80 colored copper plate engravings. An association copy being the J D Jackson copy with his signed presentation dated 1874 on the front free endpaper of both volumes and each volume stamped with his name at the base of the spine. An outstanding atlas of eye disease. Sichel's book has long been considered one the finest pathological atlases ever produced. The introduction states that the illus. are hand colored copper plate engravings. The use of copper plate engravings allowed unprecedented rendering of detail. They were accomplished after several years work by the painter Emil Beau. A magnificent copy of the book. This copy was formerly owned by the John Davies Jackson and is in his stamped binding identifying it . Jackson has signed both both volumes and dated the presentation in 1874 to Dr. K C Scott. Jackson served as a surgeon in the Confederate Army and was the first vice president of the Am. Medical Assoc.. Immediately after the war Jackson returned to private practice, travelled throughout Europe, and began book collecting. It is most unusual to find such an important medical work beautifully preserved in a period binding for an American private collector. Jackson presented this book to Scott a year before he died. G - M # 5868; see Hirschberg VII, 109 - commenting on the quality of the illus.

Description
London: E WIlliams, 1820. First Edition. Original publisher's paste paper blue boards.. Very good; rebacked with paper at an early date; hinges reinforced; map is loose in the volume.. 8vo., [4], [1] - 363, [1] pp + folding map, and a folding plan. A presentation from the author on the front free endpaper to a Mr. Bush, London, May 1822. The anonymous author of this account of the Mahratta and Pindarree Campaign wrote a trenchant and unsparing criticism of his superior officers and their conduct of the campaigns. He was an Irish officer in the Madras Army named Marshal Clarke. Born in 1789, Clarke died at age 44 in Peronne, northern France, on his way home from India. His book is, "accompanied by beautifully engraved maps" gives a clear and lengthy account of the operations in 1817, 1818, and 1819 of the armies of the East India Company " particularly the Army of the Deckan" under the orders of the Marquis of Hastings and the direct command of Lt.-Gen. Sir T. Hislop. The campaigns were a result of an attempt to suppress the depredations of the Pindaris and Maratha soldiers in central and southern India. Events were to foreshadow the First Afghan War for the British. See Dupuy & Dupuy, pp. 786 - 788.

Octavo (8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches; 210 x 142 mm). [viii], [1]-[279], [1, blank] pp. Publisher's full black cloth. Front board stamped in silver. Spine lettered in silver and red. Top edge dyed black, others uncut. In publisher original illustrated dust jacket. Some minor soiling to edges of cloth. Jacket is about fine. Overall an about fine copy. Thompson's first book, this critically acclaimed chronicle of a year spent with this notorious motorcycle gang changed the face of reportage forever (inaugurating "Gonzo Journalism.")
