Description
London: Collins, 1938. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A Near Fine copy in like dust jacket. Black cloth printed in white on the spine. Book with slight foxing to the closed textblock and a previous owner's name on the front pastedown. Dust jacket entirely unrestored and is not price clipped. Minor chips and tears to the spine ends and corners, but a sharp copy overall. A beautiful copy of White's most famous book, his modern interpretation of the Arthurian legend (based on Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur). Adapting Arthurian legend for modern readers, White provided Arthuriana fans with a backstory on the childhood and education of the boy who would become king. Tracing Arthur's youth and training with Merlin, the novel also put the young hero in contact with other familiar Medieval figures including Robin hood. Basis for the beloved 1962 Disney film of the same name and a classic of modern literature in its own right. "The single finest fantasy novel written in our time, or for that matter ever written, by any conceivable standard must be T.H. White's" (Carter). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Description
1826. First Edition. (ENGLAND) TURNER, J.M.W. Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England… London: John and Arthur Arch, et al., 1826. Two volumes in one. Quarto, contemporary full dark blue polished calf gilt rebacked with original spine and red morocco spine label laid down; raised bands, original marbled endpapers preserved. $2800.First edition of this picturesque tour of the southern coast of England, with 48 full-page copper-engravings—38 after drawings by J.M.W. Turner—and 32 copper-engraved vignettes (two after Turner), desirable in full contemporary calf-gilt.""English illustration found its most typical expression in landscape, under the inspiration of Turner… Here we have no longer a second-rate version of a mere cosmopolitan art, but a school truly indigenous, both in its style and its technical means… Among the landscape etchers of the early 19th century [Turner is] the most distinguished artist of all"" (Hind, 221, 242). ""This book, 40 of the engravings in which are after Turner, appeared in parts between 1814 and 1826. It thus ran in double harness with William Daniell's Voyage Round Great Britain, and the two works between them helped to awaken the British to the glories of their coastline. The Southern Coast ranks immediately after the Liber Studiorum and Picturesque Views in England and Wales among books illustrated by Turner with engravings on copper"" (Ray). Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England 11. Lowndes, 2722. Only occasional faint foxing; plates and text generally quite clean. Corners with expert restoration. An excellent copy in contemporary calf.

Description
Columbia (S C): S J M'Morris, March 1831. First English Edition.. Original publisher's linen backed boards. . Good; the paper cover of rear board has been torn away; rear board is chipped at the extremities; backstrip re-glued to cover; tide marks; untrimmed.. 8vo, xxv, [3 - errata], [23] - 408 pp. + two portraits. The Contents and Errata are bound out of sequence. An interesting book translated by an important American scientist. Cooper is best known for his earlier treatises on chemistry, economics, and medical jurisprudence. He was a true polymath who made contributions and important discoveries in each of these areas. Cooper's translation of Broussais is of more than passing interest because of his own theories and published comments on the topic of insanity especially the claims of diminished legal responsibility of the insane. Though Broussais theories on the origin of disease and illness have not been credible in the modern period Cooper's preface to the text presents an intriguing argument for the consideration of Broussais' views on the origin of insanity. It must be born in mind that at publication it was a time when numerous theories were propounded by different authors as to the origin of insanity and mental illness. No one theory could account for all the symptoms observed in the various clinical cases. At the time Broussais was a highly regarded medical authority. Cooper draws attention to the connection between perception, sensation, consciousness, and the body. He then incorporates Broussais' theory of irritation and comes full circle to what he describes as 'physiological metaphysics' that began with the Scot's school of philosophy of mind (see p. viii). A fascinating book. S & S # 6306.

Description
Tralee, Ireland: Churchhill House Press, 2007. Hardcover. New/Sealed. light blue cloth boards. 349 pgs w/ illustrations. pictorial dustjacket. Michael Stapleton (1747-1801) was the most skilled stuccodor working in the neoclassical or ‘Adam’ style that dominated Dublin interior decoration in the final decades of the eighteenth century. Although the astonishing quality and variety of Dublin’s eighteenth-century decorative plasterwork has long been celebrated, this is the first full length exploration of Stapleton’s work. It publishes for the first time the remarkable collection of drawings from his workshop which are held at the National Library of Ireland. Conor Lucey’s study of Stapleton’s career presents new research drawn from a broad range of sources and examines the collection of designs within the broader context of neoclassical stuccowork in Dublin, considering it as evidence for the late eighteenth-century plastering trade in general. Working outside of the established guilds, by virtue of his Catholic faith, Stapleton created one of the most successful decorating and house-building practices in Dublin of the period and designs for many of the city’s most notable late eighteenth-century interiors are included here, including studies for Trinity College, Belvedere House and Powerscourt House. Over the years Stapleton’s name has been erroneously attached to many Irish interiors with which he had no involvement. This important publication attempts to define more closely the nature of his decorative neoclassicism, and establish his oeuvre more accurately. More generally, its offers a fascinating account of the many forces at play in how the Irish Georgian interior was created.---.
