Description
New York: Vantage Press, [1952]. First Edition. Octavo (22cm.); original cloth in green and brown dust jacket; xiii,[1],329pp. Jacket very chipped and worn with some paper flaws to front flap affecting text with loss of meaning of a few words, rear flap excised and affixed to pastedown as issued. Near Fine in Good or better jacket. Inscribed and signed "To A. Stewart Phillips, with kindest regards. - Charles Wilson - Sept. 22, 1952." Author bio blurb (presumably from rear jacket flap) affixed to front pastedown as issued, beginning with the assurance that "Dr. Charles Wilner, author of Alimony: The American Tragedy, is not a misogynist." With typed letter signed by Wilner to the same A. Stewart Phillips, whose contents are of a rather aggressive nature: "Some time in 1935 when I visited you at your office relative to some button business, I happened to remark to you, that I was planning to write books. I can not [sic] help but to reflect, upon your facial expression laughing, me being an author." Wilner insists that Phillips eat crow, and describes his intention of writings "my two final volumes of about 1500 printed pages titled 'Women and Race,'" though OCLC reveals that Alimony was the author's only published work.

Description
Philadelphia: The John Winston Co,, (1898). A captivating collection of information about a broad array of things Parisian, with a nice introduction by Hilaire Belloc. Well-illustrated and with folding map bound in at the back. While this is certainly a nice addition to the body of information available on Paris, one of the most compelling reasons to add it to your collection is the lovely example of a publisher's binding. Green cloth with an elaborate gilt cover motif, top edge gilt. This copy is particularly extraordinary in that it retains its original green oil cloth dust wrapper, with gilt titled spine. To find a book of this vintage in the dust wrapper is most unusual. The dust wrappers were, indeed, wrappers to protect the book from dust. There is no advertisement..no cover art..nothing. Just heavy oil cloth with a title to protect a beautiful book. Housed in original dark green slipcase.

Description
London and New Castle: The British Library and Oak Knoll Press, 2007. First Edition. quarto, cloth in dust jacket. 230 pp.; 8 plates. Jessie M. King (1875-1949) was the foremost Scottish book designer and illustrator of the 20th century. Her work reflected the mixture of Symbolism and Arts and Crafts practiced by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the others of "The Four" in Glasgow where she was trained. During the 50 years of her career she designed and illustrated some 250 books, over 100 greeting cards, bookplates and assorted items of ephemera. A Guide to the Printed Work of Jessie M. King attempts to bring order to this enormous output. Every known item has been annotated, classified and catalogued, and a further section lists over 100 publications containing reproductions of other works by the artist. An appendix by Dr. A.D. Portno discusses her work for the German publishers, Globus. A second appendix investigates her designs for Routledge's series of children's classics. In order to do justice to Jessie M. King's talent, besides the selection of items illustrated in the book, a substantial part of her work is illustrated in color on an accompanying CD-Rom. On the CD, every significant item is present, with each illustration numbered according to the corresponding entry in the text. A fine copy.

Description
No place listed [Massachusetts], 1812. No binding. Very good +. [VOTER'S RIGHTS] [GERRYMANDERING] [GOVERNMENTAL PAMPHLET.] 8vo; 4 disbound leaves; text clear and easy to read; age-toning and light chipping to edges; very good plus. In 1812, Elbridge Thomas Gerry (1744-1814) was Governor of the state of Massachusetts and a member of the Democratic-Republicans, the party founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in 1792. Elected in 1810, during his second term in office, Gerry signed into law a controversial bill drafted by his party that created unusual redistricting to keep his political party in power. The term "gerrymandering" is named after him. Governor Gerry went on to be Vice President under James Madison in 1813 and died in office in 1814. The outrage poured onto the Democratic-Republicans in this report is real and strong for numerous changes made to governmental structures. In regard to this unusual redistricting of voting areas, the Federal Republicans argue, "They have divided towns in the most arbitrary and capricious manner, without any regard to the local convenience, and contrary to the wishes and remonstrances of a great majority of the Inhabitants, with the avowed design of increasing the strength of one political party..." While this was not the first instance of redistricting for political gain, this was the start of naming the practice "gerrymandering." The report presents the candidacies of Bezaleel Taft and Francis Blake for the Massachusetts state senate.
