A comprehensive book by an excise officer who conducted polemics in the press of the day and published several technical astronomical books. The book offered here is one of the most straight forward manuals on a complex topic that I have encountered. Leadbetter provides instruction for setting and laying out the hour lines etc. for various forms of equinoctial dials, spheres, and dials of various shapes.There are also sections for laying out scales and designing quadrants. There are tables of latitude for the main cities of the world and for England. Accompanying the technical portions of the text are instructions for painting the faces of dials, preparations of oils for, " ... laying on colours upon DIals", ingredients of those colors, gold-leaf, and finally the painting of timber work. Wallis p. 86.
