Description
Stuttgart: Hallberger Verlagshandlung, 1836. First Edition.. Contemporary three-quarter leather over blue boards.. Fair; worn binding; some spotting; front cover detached.. 8vo, xii, 428 pp. (with music). A Hebrew song book issued under the authority of synagogue's governing council in Wurtemberg. What makes this book interesting is that it was the first publication that would introduce prescribed music and songs for the instruction of children and for use in family services in the home. The introduction (in German) states that though the forms may be innovative the substance and intent of the songs retain the ancient content and appeal. There appears to have been dissent within the community on the introduction of this material.
