The book is his inaugural lecture at Carlisle College. Cooper provides a history of chemistry from the Greeks through Lavoisier with special attention to electro-chemistry, geology, phlogiston theory, and mineralogy. There are sections given over to glass making, plating and gilding, and other technologies of the period. There is an extensive appendix of notes. Rink #671; Cole #293.
