Description
Edinburgh: Adam & Charles Black, 1864. Simpson, James Young (1811-70). (1) Autograph letter signed to Dr. McGavin. 4pp. on 2 sheets (probably originally a bifolium). Edinburgh, 24 December 1864. 184 x 115 mm. Small tears along folds, a few small chips. (2) Simpson. Acupressure: A new method of arresting surgical haemorrhage and of accelerating the healing of wounds. xiv, 580pp. Text illustrations. Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1864. 217x 141 mm. Original cloth, rebacked preserving original spine, light wear, front cover a bit stained. Front free endpaper a bit frayed, light toning, but good to very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Simpson on the front flyleaf: "Dr. McGavin with the Author's kindest regards." Manuscript note by Thomas Young Simpson (likely a descendant) on p. v. Together 2 items. The letter is laid into the First Edition of Simpson's treatise describing his innovative method of surgical acupressure (not to be confused with the traditional Chinese practice), in which metal needles were used to occlude the arteries during operations, reducing the risk of hemorrhage and promoting speedy wound healing. The technique, though developed further and found successful, failed to gain Simpson the recognition he was expecting. Simpson succeeded in creating a vogue for acupressure that lasted at least thirty years, though it did not lessen the mortality rates in British hospitals. Simpson presented this copy to a Dr. McGavin (whom we have not been able to further identify), accompanying it with the letter described above: "Along with this note I have taken the liberty of sending you a copy of the essay on Acupressure-of the size of which I am quite ashamed. But I could not stop & abridge. "Dr. Bell has done the translation with, I think, much ability, & in a good style; & I feel greatly indebted to him. "I have sent a copy to Nelaton & one to Velpeau. Do any of the surgeons at Paris-besides these-read English? "If you read the book have some compassion on it-as a book on surgery written by a Doctor. I should not have written it-(so say some of the surgeons here); but I could not help it. Of the ultimate adoption of acupressure I have no doubt, but a long time is required . . . Auguste Nélaton (1807-73) and Alfred-Armand-Louis-Marie Velpeau (1795-1867) were prominent French surgeons. Accompanying Simpson's letter and book are various pieces of correspondence including a letter from Norman E. Lamplugh dated 11 February 1944 presenting the above-described items to Thomas Young Simpson (likely a descendant). .

Description
Boston: New-England: Printed by Green & Russell, and Edes & Gill..., 1761. 31, [1 blank] pp. With the half title, as issued. Disbound, mild toning. Else Very Good. Caner, who devoted much of his religious career to defending orthodox Episcopacy in opposition to his fellow New England ministers Jonathan Mayhew and Charles Chauncy, laments "the loss of our Head, our Royal Master, the political Father of his People." He praises the new King, George III, and recommends that all serve him, "duly considering whose Authority he hath." Unlike his colleague Samuel Cooper, who also preached this day to Governor Bernard and Council, Caner tarries not at all on the theme that the Monarch's powers are limited by the British Constitution. Evans 8811. Sabin 10684n. ESTC W27529.

Description
[Harrisburg?, 1855. 48pp. Stitched in original printed blue title wrappers [spine-chipped]. Two stab holes in blank left margin. Light scattered foxing, old vertical fold, Very Good. This document, says Howes, was reprinted "to discredit" Cameron, a Pennsylvania kingmaking politician who stuffed his pockets with the spoils of a panoply of public offices. In 1838 President Van Buren made him an Indian Commissioner in charge of settling the Winnebago Indian land claims. The appointment ended in scandal when he used his own bank's notes as part of the adjustment. He became derisively known as "The Great Winnebago Chief." The front wrapper, quoting from the St. Louis Reporter, calls Cameron's activities "infamous speculation." Bibliographers-- generally recording only a 38-page pamphlet under this title-- conclude that this pamphlet was printed in 1839. That seems unlikely. Original House Document 229 was printed during the 25th Congress in 1839. This reprint was published to thwart Cameron's designs on a U.S. Senate seat, and was probably printed in 1855: he was running for the Senate that year and a related pamphlet, entitled a Rejoinder to the Defence Published by Simon Cameron, also issued in 1855. Each of them exposes Cameron's shady business dealings during his term as Indian Commissioner. "Plot of Simon Cameron and fellow rascals to defraud these Indians of half a million dollars, frustrated by a young army officer, E.A. Hitchcock" [Howes]. OCLC 38259958 [2- PA State, Boston Athen.] as of May 2023. Field 1686 and Howes W569 [38pp].

Enschede, Zonen, Haarlem, Holland, portraying Walt Whitman in profile, enlarged reproduction of 1891 photograph of Walt Whitman by Thomas Eakin at head of text. Underneath, the quote, taken from Whitman's "Democratic Vistas": " We have frequently printed the word Democracy. Yet I cannot too often repeat that it is a word the real gist of which still sleeps, quite unawaken'd, notwithstanding the resonance and many angry tempests out of which its syllables have come, from pen or tongue. It is a great word, whose history, I suppose remains unwritten, because that history has yet to be enacted. It is in some sort, younger brother of another great and often-used word, NATURE, whose history also waits unwritten. WALT WHITMAN". Leiden: Brill, 2021. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Octavo. xii, 291, (1)pp. Index. Illustrated green boards with purple, red and green spines, lettered in white. Illustrated with 10 text figures (some in color). A fine, as new copy. "Angels are the ultimate stranger. They come from another world and have a special place in the art of the Russian Jewish painter Marc Chagall (1887-1985). In My Life (1923) the young Chagall recalls one memorable night in Saint-Petersburg. Drifting into sleep in the corner of a room (all he could afford) he suddenly saw the ceiling open and a winged being, surrounded by light and blue air, hovered above him before disappearing through the ceiling again"-- (OCLC) Contributions from history, philosophy, religion, sociology, literature, and the arts offer a new perspective on the Jewish experience in early modern and modern times: in contact and conflict, in processes of attribution and allegation, but also self-reflection and negotiation, focused on the figure of the stranger. Throughout history, Jews have often been regarded, and treated, as “strangers.” In The Stranger in Early Modern and Modern Jewish Tradition, authors from a wide variety of disciplines discuss how the notion of “the stranger” can offer an integrative perspective on Jewish identities, on the non-Jewish perceptions of Jews, and on the relations between Jews and non-Jews in an innovative way.
