Condition
Very good. The Valsalva has a tear in the blank margin of the titlepage.
Description
Leyden: Langerak, 1735/1730. Later Printings.. Contemporary stiff vellum.. Very good. The Valsalva has a tear in the blank margin of the titlepage.. Small 4to, I - [14], [1] - 143, [13 - index] + 10folding copperplate engavings; II - [16], [1] - 76, [4 - publisher's catalog of medical books] + 16 plates (some folding). These are two different books on the same topic bound together. The Valsalva retains the dedication leaf absent from most copies and the Langerak book catalogue is also present. Both books are classics of otology. The Valsalva provides invaluable information on the smallest muscles and nerves of the ear as well as illustrates a method of inflating the middle ear that is still used today. The Du Verney is the scientific account of the structures and diseases of the ear. He was also first to develop a theory of audition that has been generally credited to Helmholtz. Though issued years apart (and often sold separately) it is safe to assume the Langerak issued a number of copies of this book in this manner. See G-M #1545 & #1546 citing the first editions.

Description
Ehon Kaikei Zan (Jyō) 絵本會稽山 上. 22 x 15.5cm book string-bound Japanese-style, fukuro-toji. Decorated front and rear wrappers with title slip on left hand side of front wrapper. 5 cho, and an initial, unnumbered cho, of color woodcuts and Japanese text. The final cho is pasted down onto the inside rear wrapper. The character Take/ Bu 武 (warrior or military) is printed on the hashira. A fascinating and early example of Kappazuri Hanga 合羽摺版画, which starts with a woodblock for the black sections with color added with a stencil. The title could refer to the well-known play by Chikamatsu Monzaemon 近松門左衛門 (1653-1725) entitled Soga Kaikeizan 曽我會稽山 (The Soga Brothers at Kaikei Mountain) written in 1718. The book depicts a battle on land and sea between warriors in Japan. One section mentions Mega (also Tsumashika) 妻鹿, the area that is now the southern part of Hyogo prefecture and Himeji city. This book is a very similar style and very close in size to an example dated 1801 found in “The Story of Kappazuri From My Collection” by Akifumi Nakade. See page 194-5, plate 116. Wear and dirt staining of wrappers with worming and ink stain on bottom. Front inside wrapper appears to be missing a page. Extensive worming in margins, rips and wear to pages, thumbing at bottom corners of pages.

Description
Quincy [MA], 1 October 1874. Letter. Near Fine. Three-page letter on both sides of a 10" x 8" sheet to author and editor George W. Curtis responding about a series of lectures being organized by a man named Carpenter. Adams says he has an aversion "to all the system of lecturing which had been carried on so systematically of later years.... It would be a great inconvenience to me to break off from the prosecution of my present undertaking, which will be likely to absorb all my remaining days of usefulness.... He mentioned your name, that of Dr. Woolsey and Mr. Schurz as within the perview of the plan. What could I say but that if gentlemen of that mark were ready to advance, I could not fall back?" Curtis, editor of HARPER'S WEEKLY during the Civil War years and one of the most influential American journalists of any day, also was known for his speeches, one of which was a tribute to Charles Sumner. Curtis also had the honor of helping Thoreau build his cabin on Walden Pond. Fine letter from one important American figure to another. Charles Francis Adams Sr. (August 18, 1807 - November 21, 1886) was an editor, writer, politician, and diplomat. He was a son of John Quincy Adams and grandson of John Adams, about whom he wrote a major biography. Adams served two terms in the Massachusetts State Senate before running unsuccessfully as vice-presidential candidate for the Free Soil Party in the election of 1848 on a ticket with former president Martin Van Buren. During the Civil War, Adams served as the United States Minister to the United Kingdom under Abraham Lincoln, where he played a key role in keeping the British government neutral and not diplomatically recognizing the Confederacy.

In short, they are the Irish counterpart to Foss's book, The Judges of England. And secondly, the general chapters are a careful history of the Irish judiciary, its members, their politics and connections, and the legal profession in general, with some remarks upon the history of the courts in Ireland. Near Fine in Good dj
Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. Near Fine in Good dj. (c.1937). Later Printing. Hardcover. [a good sound book, minor bump to lower rear corner, faint dust-soiling to top of text block; jacket is heavily edgeworn, long vertical crease in spine, tears at spine extremities, a bit of paper loss at top right corner of rear panel]. "Women's fiction" with a vengeance, depicting a day in the life of a 35-year-old matron: "A sick servant, an unworldly husband, a querulous, rich uncle, the incessant demands of her children, the funeral of a friend, the importunities of a would-be lover -- these are some of the things that Mary Strong must deal with between bed and bed." (A good thing her name is Strong, I'd say.) The author, a Chicago native, was primarily a writer of children's poetry and juvenile fiction; this seems to have been her first novel for an adult audience, and it was followed the next year by another piece of women's fiction, "All the Year Round," but with a somewhat grimmer theme, that of a woman coping with an alcoholic husband. .
