Description
Peale is best known for his presidential portraits of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In this Autograph Letter Signed, 8vo, n.p., May 15, 1857, Peale is likely writing to John Durand (1822-1908), painter and son of artist Asher B. Durand. John Durand co-founded a cultural and art periodical called, "The Crayon," published from Jan 3, 1855 to July 1861. Peale writes, "After you left me this morning it occurred to me that possibly in your next number you would give a few words on the Exhibition here - In this case you might say that it contained nothing from my pencil, & that I preferred to send a portrait, my last work in my 80th Year, to the New York Academy.... which I have done - That of a Young Man." Nicely signed, "Rembrandt Peale." The painting's title refers to his, "Portrait of a Young Man." Peale had settled in Philadelphia by the time he wrote this letter, and that city is likely the place to which he refers regarding the Exhibition. Earlier in the year of our letter, 1857, Peale made prints that he called "Monochrome of Washington." When he lectured at the New York Historical Society on June 16, he displayed Washington portraits including a Monochrome decorated with cord and tassel. ( see journals at Penn State Univ. on line) Peale painted his first portrait at the age of 17 of President George Washington, in 1795. Over the course of his long and prolific career as portrait painter, Peale would paint over 70 pictures of Washington, portraits of President Thomas Jefferson as well as Chief Justice John Marshall. In addition to painting the Founding Fathers, Peale created many portraits including the one referenced in our letter. Letters of Peale mentioning one of his works are particularly uncommon. Matted with bust length albumen print of the artist attached to a mat, possibly not the original mat. Corners of the print are somewhat damaged, image is somewhat faded. The portrait print of the artist matches the tone of Peale's letter and creates a handsome pairing.

Description
3 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Venice, July 29, 1910, Tolentini 3536. On onionskin paper with blindstamp of a quill on paper to lower edges. In Italian (with translation). Wolf-Ferrari asks his correspondent to send him some scores as soon as possible so he can study them "lovingly" rather than superficially. "I had already sent my Venice address to Via dei Greci, Rome, and from there they had already answered me, telling me that they would have sent the scores just as soon as [Arturo] Toscanini had released them ...The scores are really a lot. They should get to me right away so I can prepare with ease ... I will need at least twenty days so that the examination would not be too superficial, but rather, loving." Creased at folds; short tear to central fold; last blank page slightly stained at lower right. Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) was an Italian composer best known for his operas Cenerentola, Le donne curiose, and I Gioielli della Madonna. The present letter may concern the score of I Gioielli, which premiered at the Berlin Kurfürstenoper on December 23, 1911.

Durham [England]: ca., 1850. Broadside, 25 x 19cm. Decorative border. Very Good or better. Text of two popular verses of the day, the latter in its original version-- reflecting the casual racism of the time-- before Disney et al cleaned it up. The former pokes fun at uppity farmers living beyond their means in a laughable effort to achieve upward mobility. The two printed side by side. OCLC 912810680 [1- Durham U], 21265073 [2- U TX, U Pitt] as of May 2020.

Description
Boston: George Reed, 1856. Later Prtg.. Original calf backed printed blue paper over paste paper boards.. Good; some wear to the front cover that is wanting a portion of the printed surface; rear endpaper excised.. Oblong 8vo, 224 pp. (rear cover is a printed advertisement for Reed's other music books). Pratt was a music teacher in Mass.. The book offered here is a device for teaching music; the first 100 pages of text are devoted to the reading of music and composition. The balance is a song book. One supposes that the author invokes the name of the great educator in the title to emphasize the fact that the book is a teaching device. Early portions of the text do indeed follow the masters mathematical instruction here converted to scales.
