Description
N.p.: N.p., 1970. Collection of twelve vintage oversize double weight photographs, eleven vintage contact sheets, and six vintage photographs taken by noted fashion photographer Ara Gallant. Photographer's stamp on the versos. Gallant began his career in high fashion as a hairstylist for Vogue in the early 1960s, becoming the first stylist to be paid solely to style hair by a magazine. He was best known for perfecting the "flying hair" technique, most memorably captured on a portrait of Twiggy in 1968. During his tenure at Vogue he worked with a number of prominent photographers, including Richard Avedon and Irving Penn, and his work was featured on 26 Vogue covers in total. Gallant would begin working as a photographer in the 1970s, succeeding Sari Marks as staff photographer for the fashion magazine Ambiance. Gallant became well known around New York for his personal style as much as his photographs, sporting all black from head to toe, wearing high heeled cowboy boots and a Japanese schoolboy hat, lining his eyes with black kohl, and frequenting Andy Warhol's Studio 54. By the 1980s drug use and financial troubles would force Gallant to sell his apartment in the West End, relocating to Los Angeles, where he would pursue an ultimately unsuccessful career in the film industry. The photographs in the collection, taken throughout the 1970s, feature a who's who of contemporary celebrities, and are shot in Gallant's typically fantastical and glamorous style, with an androgynous bent, and, of course, distinctive hair. Gallant would enjoy a period of renewed interest after a collection of his styling and photographic work was published by Damiani in 2010, edited by David Wills. Photographs ranging from 6.25 x 7.75 inches to 11 x 14 inches. Near Fine to Very Good plus.

Description
Boston: Stimpson & Clapp, 1832. pp [1]-72, 41-43, [1 blank]. Disbound, widely scattered foxing. Ink signature, "Seth Williams" on title page. Good+. OCLC records two different printings in 1832 from Stimpson & Clapp, of 75 pages and (40, 9-43) pages. In this copy, the text reads appropriately; evidently the printer combined sheets from the two printings to make a complete pamphlet. The Convention endorses the Clay-Sergeant ticket for the race against Andrew Jackson, and denounces "the imbecility of the existing Administration...which substitutes its own will for the law of the land." Proceedings are reported, Electors are listed. The Convention's 'Address to the People of Massachusetts' and Daniel Webster's speech to the Convention are printed. Sabin 36741. Not in Wise & Cronin.

Description
New York: William Harned, 1850. First edition. Stitched paper wrappers. A good copy, front wrapper chipped, dampstain on wrapper and lower margins throughout.. 22 pp. 8vo. William Jay (1789-1858), the son of John Jay, was founder of American Bible Society, a member of the American Antislavery Society, whose constitution he drafted, and president of the Peace Society. Like Wilberforce, he opposed the plan to colonize the former slaves in Africa, declaring that those who favored the plan were not moved by 'the precepts of gospel,' but by 'prejudice against an unhappy portion of the human family', (DAB, X, p. 11-12.) Clay's Compromise did not pass. It took Stephen Douglas and Daniel Webster to finally get a compromise bill through. Not in LCP. Afro-Americana, Dumond, Blockson. Sabin 35867n.

Description
Boston: W.M. Crosby and J.P. Nichols, 1849. First edition. END OF LIFE CONSIDERATIONS BY ENGLISH UNITARIAN PREACHER WHO MOVED TO BOSTON IN 1850, A YEAR AFTER PUBLISHING THIS BOOK IN 1849. 7 inches tall hardcover, full leather binding, gilt ruled borders to covers, spine with raised bands, gilt leather title label, aeg, inscription to front flyleaf, "Mrs. Washburn, with the respects of N. J. Allen and E. A. H. Allen, Bridgewater, Aug. 15th, 1849." xii, 466 pp. Front joint starting, faint water stain bottom corner of front endpapers and text pages, scattered light foxing, overall very good minus. WILLIAM MOUNTFORD (1816 – 1885) was an English Unitarian preacher and author. Mountford entered Manchester College in York in 1813, then aged about seventeen. Within a month after leaving college (8 July 1838), he commenced his ministry at the Strangeways Chapel, Manchester (opened 17 June). After a short ministry at Hinckley, he moved to Lynn, Norfolk. He speaks of having traveled abroad; and perhaps at this time he obtained the degree of Ph.D., M.A., at a German university. He styled himself "M.A." in only one of his books: on the title pages of the rest, he is simply called "William Mountford." His salary was now only £70 a year; and he lived chiefly on brown bread and milk, that he might be able to buy books. Mountford had long wished to visit the United States, and in 1849, Dr. Huntington obtained a free passage for him. He sailed in November, arriving in Boston early in 1850. He preached for a time at the Unitarian church at Washington, D.C., where President Millard Fillmore had a seat and Daniel Webster and Edward Everett were occasional attendants. In the summer of 1851, he had preached at Nahant, a favorite seaside resort about twelve miles from Boston. The Mountfords were in Europe from 1858 to 1860. They stayed a long time in Rome, where "the subject of the supernatural" grew on him "as to importance, and deepened as to interest". In a second visit, 1867, he preached at Bridgeport with great power and earnestness on the "Open Vision". Between these journeys, he had been writing a book, for which he studied the Fathers and Neo-Platonists; but he resolved not to speak of it till it was finished. It was not printed; but it probably contained the substance of five articles on "The Miraculous" in the Monthly Religious Magazine in 1868-69. These excited great attention, and were praised both by the Orthodox and the Radicals, so that he was encouraged to add another on " The Outburst of Spiritualism". Mountford ultimately retired to Cambridge, Massachusetts. His works include Euthanasy, or Happy Talks toward the End of Life (1849) and Miracles Past and Present (1870). He died in Boston. In Note by the Editor in Euthanasy (offered here), he states, "For reasons that are for him sufficient, Mr. Mountford has caused this work to be published in America, rather than in his own country."
