Description
Monmouthshire: The Old Stile Press, 1990. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Martin, Gillian. Letter "P" of 26 special copies, quarto size, 67 pp., signed by Gillian Martin, with a separate insert. The two stories collected here are little-known works of prose by English artist and poet Edward Lear (1812-1888), best known for his literary nonsense poems and for popularising the limerick form. The stories are bound together, sharing a single spine and covers with the two front covers and their texts upside-down in relation to each other: a way in which, according to the Old Stile Press, "Lear would have approved". This publication from the Old Stile Press is generously illustrated by Gillian Martin, a UK artist. "Strongly influenced by all things mid-century, Gillian combines traditional ink and paint with digital medias to create quirky illustrations" (n.b., quote from the web site of King and McGaw). For this special lettered edition, Martin has hand-coloured both half-title pages, frontispieces and title pages, colophon illustrations, and the illustrations found in the separate insert, titled "Nonsense Cookery". Martin also provides an original drawing for the assigned letter and which is also coloured, found on the verso of the colophon of "The Story of the Four Little Children. . ." ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter maroon cloth with grey and cream paper boards, hand-coloured illustrations and brown lettering on the front and rear boards, gilt lettering on the spine, all edges speckled black, red endpapers, hand-coloured half-title pages, both stories with illustrated frontispieces hand-coloured by Gillian Martin and title pages with hand-colour illustrations by Martin, black-and-white illustrations by Martin throughout, two colophons meeting in the centre of the book with colour illustrations, an original colour illustration by Martin on the page preceding a colophon; quarto size (11.25" by 7.75"), pagination: "Four Little Children": [1-6] 7-29 [30-33]; "History of Seven Families": [1-6] 7-33 [34], one of 26 special copies (plus an additional 225 copies), this lettered "P", signed by Gillian Martin on the page with original artwork preceding a colophon. Separate insert laid in, one sheet folded once to make four pages, with hand colouring by Martin, containing three "nonsense" recipes, entitled "Three Receipts For Domestic Cookery". Housed in a slipcase covered in red paper with black cloth sides, with line drawings in black on red paper, depicting the head of a bearded Edward Lear with small, fancifal creatures dancing around him, on the front and rear boards. ___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The separate recipe insert is fine, clean and without wear. The slipcase is fine, strong and sturdy, clean, without wear. A perfect example, as though just received from The Old Stile Press. ___POSTAGE:  International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Very Good
Description
First Edition; A Very Good book in a Very Good dust jacket. SIGNED and inscribed by the author on the front free paper. A handsome copy of this tale of US paratroopers in occupied Japan, written by one; very scarce signed. This copy is in very good or better condition with a square tight binding, bright silver lettering over black boards, and clean pages throughout that show some light foxing; the book also shows some light rubbing to the edges and some moderate spotting to the exterior text block. Housed in a clean and bright very good dust jacket that shows mild rubbing and light chipping to the spine ends, edges, and corners, and a couple small closed tears to the back panel edges. Overall, a handsome and presentable copy of a book that would be a great addition to any WWII fiction collection, particularly with a Japanese occupation slant. Not price clipped ($2.75 intact), not remaindered, not ex-library; in archival protection and will ship in a sturdy box.

Description
Large colored map (27 1/2" x 17"), map title on map, no date or publication location listed on the map. Paper is somewhat fragile, some browning, aging, and corner staining, two corners chipped away, a few chips and tears, mostly in margins, center split at fold at bottom of the map, repaired with archival tape, two other small tears repaired with archival tape, a couple of other old tape repairs, coloring rather light. Despite the imperfections the image is fairly clean and bright. This is a rather scarce map from a scarce atlas (Atlas of Bergen County New Jersey 1776-1876). It was published during the American Centennial, and while it is somewhat sparsely filled in, the towns and highlights are prominently featured. Will require extra postage.

Description
Rangoon, Burma: [The Society], 1956. Octavo (23 x 14.5 cm.), [2], 263 pages. Advertisements. Stated Second Edition, enlarged, following the original issue of 1954. Edition statement from the foreword. A substantial missionary cookbook, with 654 recipes, many attributed. An additional 120 recipes appear in this second edition. Includes interesting short sections on cereals, fruits and vegetables available in Rangoon markets, and a practical nutrition guide, titled, "How Shall We Feed Our Babies?" The recipes are a mixture of American dishes with a good number of global dishes, including some from Armenia, China (quite a few), Holland, India (again, quite a few), Indonesia, Japan, Italy, Turkey and more; a far more international collection that one expects in a missionary cookbook. Dishes indicated as Burmese include Balachaung, Buffadoo Duck, Candied Pumpkin, Chicken Kaukswe, Cocoanut Blancmange (?), Dohl Dohl, Lthoke Fish, Hilsa Curry, Mok-si-kyo, Nga-boung-doke, Sa-nwin-ma-kin, Seaweed Kyauk-Kyaw, and more. The Chairwoman of the cookbook's Editorial Committee, Mary Brewster Hollander, calls out a few special contributors to the book, including Allen Bloodworth of Mason, Texas - then living in Burma, who supplies his recipe for Texas Barbecue, and the local Daw Thei Chone, the "white-haired Burmese gentlewoman who could at once describe every step and ingredient of her unique preserved ginger... She's famous all over Burma for her wonderful ginger." The Chairwoman also indicates that all profits from the book "will be used for Community Service Projects." The advertisements imply Rangoon was quite a developed city at the time of publication. Previous owner's small name sticker to front and rear paste-downs; very light soiling internally. Previous owner's bookplate to front paste-down. In black and red printed textured cloth, with an illustration of a Burmese woman cooking with a wok. Near very good. Scarce. [OCLC locates one copy of this second edition (National Library of Sweden), and four copies of the 1954 first edition].
