1945. ("Nelson Algren") in black fountain pen ink on a US Government V-Mail lettersheet, "Somewhere in France", March 31, 1945. 8 1/2" x 11". With U.S. Army "Examiner Stamp". 1 page with A.P.O postal cancellation, April 2, 1945 and Covici's address on the verso. Very good (short tear). To Pvt Allan Covici ASN 16124028 29th Signal Co. A.P.O. 29 c/o U.S. Army Nelson Algren writes that Chris Rowland* had given him Covici's address, saying that he was probably also stationed in France, saying he would like to meet someone form "the fast international set." Algren goes on to comment on the French, and French wines. *There are numerous references to Chris Rowland and his brother Neal in Bettina Drew's biography of Algren. **Algren tried, but was unsuccessful in avoiding military service and he was drafted as a private. Frontispiece in each volume, 27 plates from drawings, engravings and photographs, printed tissue guards. Maroon cloth, covers and spines decoratively stamped in gilt, top edges gilt. Inner front hinge of volume I and inner rear hinge of volume II cracked, else a fine and handsome set. "Tacoma edition" of this classic account of the first American attempt at settlement on the Pacific Coast, 1811, including the earliest extended relation of Wilson P. Hunt's overland expedition from St. Louis to that settlement. Includes drawings by R. F. Zogbaum, plus the intricate gilt cover design by famous book designer and artist Margaret Armstrong, with her initials printed in gilt at lower corner of front covers. "This book has been reprinted so many times as to almost defy description... however, several specific editions deserve mention. In 1895, G. P.
