Description
London: J. Booker; Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy; et al., 1819. Near fine.. Beautiful Regency-era set of the classic compendium of Middle Eastern folktales with illustrations by Queen Victoria's (future) drawing master. In the framing device of ONE THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS, Sharazade delays her own execution by captivating her captor-king with stories. The compilation of Islamic Golden Age folktales would gain popularity in Europe after Orientalist Antoine Gallard translated the work into his native French in 1704. English translations soon followed, and what came to be known as THE ARABIAN NIGHTS would end up having a powerful influence on what is commonly thought of as the Western narrative tradition- with figures such as Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sinbad the Sailor leaving an indelible mark on the European cultural imagination. A lovely set with Westall's evocative illustrations in stunning blue calf. Four volumes, 6.25'' x 3.75'' each. Contemporary full blue calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-stamped spines, red spine labels, triple gilt-rules. All edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Original silk brown ribbon markers. Illustrated with frontispieces in every volume and 7 additional full page plate engravings. iv, 358; iv, 350; [4], 340; [4], 384 pages. Light rubbing and edgewear, faint scattered foxing, moreso to endpapers, else sound and bright.

Just About Fine
Description
Various. No binding. Just About Fine. New York: [ca. 1980s-1990s]. Set of 11 vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) and one 5 x 7" (13 x 18 cm) black-and-white photos. All have photographer credits, two are double weight, one has text on verso, two have holograph printing notations in margins. Overall just about fine. Steve Reich (b. 1936) is one of the founders of minimalist music, His innovations include using tape loops to create phasing patterns, as on the early compositions It's Gonna Rain (1965) and Come Out (1966), and the use of simple, audible processes, as on Pendulum Music (1968) and Four Organs (1970). Works like Drumming (1971) and Music for 18 Musicians (1976), both considered landmarks of minimalism and important influences on experimental music, rock and contemporary electronic music, would help entrench minimalism as a movement. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj
Description
New York: Albert & Charles Boni, Inc.. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj. 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. [light shelfwear, spine slightly turned, faint dust-soiling to top of text block; jacket slightly edgeworn and age-toned]. Agrarian novel of sorts, about a young Spanish farmer who emigrates to Cuba, "where the rising wave of a boom-period sweeps him tempestuously into the drama of Cuban life. He answers the confusion of American mines, local politics, sugar boom, and local revolution with a stubborn simplicity." The Time magazine reviewer observed that "sinister echoes of U.S. big business [and] Havana terrorism are felt only in the background of this pastoral tale of Cuban peasantry," also noting that the author had spent a year in Cuba circa 1928, where he "wandered the countryside, spoke the language, watched the people instead of the politicians." A particularly nice example of the scarce and somewhat fragile dust jacket. .

Description
New Haven, CT: Metropolitan Museum of Art / Yale University Press, 2002. Hardbound. VG+/VG+. Light blue cloth with color pictorial glossy dust jacket. 432 pp with 58 bw and 267 color plates, weighs almost 6 lbs. Published to accompany the exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, featuring works by French romance painter Theodore Chasseriau. "Theodore Chasseriau was one of the most sensual and intellectual painters of his time. A pupil and precocious disciple of Ingres, he also fell under the influence of Delacroix, and he left his mark on both the second generation of Romantic artists and their Symbolist successors. Although his works fuse Ingres's linear precision with the lush colour and Romantic exoticism of Delacroix, they escape easy stylistic classification. His oeuvre includes Orientalist and religious paintings, scenes from Antiquity, and portraits, but he is best known for his ambitious decorative compositions for the churches of Paris and for the Cour des Comptes in the Palais d'Orsay. This volume presents more than 250 of Chasseriau's paintings, drawings and prints. The texts of the essays and entries, as well as the extensive chronology, focus on the artist's personality, his professional and social milieu, and on the works themselves, thus providing an in-depth view of the state of the arts in France in the mid-19th century." Contents as follows: Indian and the Chinese, or The two Byzantines / Louis-Antoine Prat -- Between Paris and Algiers: a stubborn believer? / Stéphane Guégan -- Resurrection and metamorphosis: Chassériau about 1900 / Christine Peltre -- Catalogue / Stéphane Guégan, Peter Benson Miller, Vincent Pomarède, Louis-Antoine Prat -- Chronology / Bruno Chenique -- Precocious talent, a young man in a hurry (1819-43) ; Cour des comptes years (1844-48) ; "Young god burdened with sorrow" (1849-56) / Vincent Pomerède -- Addendum / Gary Tinterow.
