Description
Paris, 1953. One and one half page pen and ink letter (26.5 x 21.5 cm.) on single sheet of pale blue Paul Cushing Child stationery, with ink date stamp ("May 18 1953"), addressed, "USIS. 5 Place de Rome, Marseille (B du Rh)". ~ An early letter from Julia Child, written while she was living in Paris with her husband Paul and working on her first book, the seminal Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Child writes to a Mrs. Fairbanks: "What a nice hour we spent with you the other afternoon. I only wish it could be repeated, as I would love to hear more about Thomas Wolfe and all you know about him. It would also be fascinating for me to hear much much more about your culinary experiences. Mrs. de Santillana [Child's editor] says you are the best cooks she knows, and I can well believe it from the interest you take. It is indeed a fascinating subject and a beau métier. Had a nice talk about friture de cheval pour les frites [possibly french fries cooked in horse fat] with your chauffeur on the way home … " Child closes with the excuse that she must get to work on her book, what would be published in 1961 as Mastering the Art of French Cooking, co-written with Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle. "I don't expect we'll be up this way for several months again — and I've got to get to work on our book ….” This same Mrs. Fairbanks is mentioned in Child's biography, A Life in France: "I was disappointed when our new editor, Dorothy de Santillana, allowed a friend of hers, a Mrs. Fairbanks, to try a recipe from our sauce chapter without first asking our permission. We had worked so hard to develop those recipes, and I considered a number of them to be real innovations, not to mention our intellectual property" (page 173). Toning at margins, creased from prior folding, paperclip stain.

Description
Paris: Editions Robert Laffont, 1977. Small quarto (24.5 x 16 cm.), 365, [1] pages. Illustrated in the text and with eight color plates. Index. FIRST EDITION. The first cookbook from the giants of nouvelle cuisine. At the time of this publication, the two brothers had recently completed an expansion of the building and kitchen of their eponymous restaurant, Les Frères Troisgros in Roanne (Loire). This followed the restaurant receiving a third Michelin star and being called "the best restaurant in the world." The rise of the brothers is legendary, and a major element of the legend is the formative time spent in the kitchen of Fernand Point's La Pyramide in Vienne. They served in the kitchen of the great Point simultaneously with Paul Bocuse, and one can only imagine the youthful conversations among the three over cigarettes out back. The brothers certainly recognized the importance of their time with Point, as they have inscribed this copy on the half-title to Point's widow (who had continued to operate the restaurant after his death), "A Madame Point, toute notre admiration, et une pensée pour notre Maitre Fernand Point a qui nous devons tout! Amities Culinaires, Pierre Troisgros, Jean Troisgros". A magnificent association, crediting their mentor Point, "to whom we owe everything" (trans.], and illustrating the importance of succession in the culture of the best French chefs. A volume in the important series Les Recettes originales de..., edited by Claude Lebey. The entire series was issued between 1976 and 1992. In publisher's pictorial boards with some scuffing and soil. No dust jacket, as issued. Some light soil and foxing throughout the text block. With a few pencil annotations by an auction expert, otherwise very good. [OCLC locates fourteen copies].

Description
1860. [London: St. Luke's Hospital, 1860.] Original pale pink wrappers, with original narrow "one penny" envelope. First Edition, second and usual issue. Dickens describes the wretched conditions inside St. Luke's Hospital ("established in 1751, for the treatment and care of lunatics"), and in particular the "very sad and touching spectacle" of the annual Christmas Ball there (dancing around the Christmas tree). He actually wrote the original piece in 1852, at which time it appeared in his Household Words (Dickens's authorship was questioned until 1913, when the original manuscript -- in his hand -- turned up). It is here published in book form for the first time, eight years later, when Dickens gave permission for the hospital to use it as a fundraising appeal. The hospital added two items to update the piece: an article about the 1860 Ball from the "Times," plus a brief article "Contrast between 1852 and 1860," in which the hospital asserts that many of the deficiencies cited by Dickens have since been addressed. (The results of the initial mailing were not good -- which is why for this second issue, the final paragraph, the actual appeal, was highlighted in bold.) This second issue not only has the final paragraph in bold, it also has a pink wrapper (not mauve -- though all are today faded), it has the front cover title followed by a comma (not by a period), and it has a front cover border decorative only at the corners (not all 'round). This is a fine copy of this very fragile item, with scarcely any wear, soil, or foxing; as usual, the pink wrappers have faded. As with almost all copies, there is a vertical crease, because the booklet was folded vertically when the fundraising appeal was mailed out in narrow envelopes. Included with this copy is the original (unaddressed) narrow envelope with "Postage One Penny" in the corner. Since it is exactly the size to fit within the folded booklet, and a little too small to fit around the folded booklet, it is our belief that this was the envelope for the hoped-for, postage-paid contribution. It is extremely uncommon. Podeschi (Yale) B216 (second copy); Carr (U of Texas) B465; Eckel pp 188-191. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell case with inner chemise.

Description
On The High Seas: United States Navy, 1919. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff tan wrappers. (14pp). Very good. Outer wrapper (only) rather age toned, edgeworn and rubbed, but internally tight and near fine. One of the most intriguingly odd newspapers ever: On March 5, 1919 President Woodrow Wilson departed the White House for Paris, boarding the U.S.S. George Washington on March 7th for the seven-day journey to Europe. By March 14 he was in France for the Paris Peace Conference, having been there in December 1918 for a preliminary conference. He remained until June 18. The U.S.S. George Washington was an enormous German ocean liner seized by the U.S. government for a troop transport that twice carried Wilson to Europe -- accompanied of course by a formidably large escort. The ship's daily newspaper was "The Hatchet," a reference to the apocryphal George Washington cherry tree story. Begun in 1918, its masthead claims "The Largest Circulation on the Atlantic Ocean" and it consisted of a single 8" X 9" leaf ("distributed free to 'all hands'") that compiled leading news stories culled from the International News Service, Associated Press, United Press and the New York Times. A shipboard press at first produced 5,000 copies daily, a number that eventrually increased to 7,000. An "Editorial" for issue No. 1 of this Volume 11 begins, "Mr. President, we welcome you back to the George Washington. We are proud to be entrusted again with the safe conduct overseas of our President; we are proud to fly again the flag of our Commander-in-Chief." Articles about the president and this very trip appear regularly; several articles have been checked in ink by this recipient, among them "Lamar Reveals a Bolshevist Plot to Overthrow U.S.," "Conviction of [Eugene V.] Debs by Supreme Court a Blow at Bolsheviki" and "Drastic Anti-Red Bill Recommended to Congressmen." Apparently at journey's end issues could be bound together within this printed wrapper -- on the front wrapper of this rare survivor a ship's crew member has penned "Compliment / of [illegible] / Ensign / USN." Interestingly, the newspaper's masthead originally included above its name the motto "We Cannot Tell a Lie" (another reference to the cherry tree tale), but by the time of this issue that motto has been dropped. Quite scarce.

Writing during the Great Depression, Smith, who was probably a student at the Lyndon Institute boarding school, regrets that he cannot come home for the weekend due to a lack of money but instructs his parents not to send more on his behalf: Dear Mother and Dad, I had a dandy little day, or as dandy as could be expected in a place like this. I got a spauling of sixteen apiece and that was just about 160 whacks too much. I am going to tell you that I am sorry that I will have to stay up here over the weekend because my financial standing is not to allow me to come home but dont think anything is wrong it is only the depression and I will be able to make arrangements to stay here because one of my pals is staying here and I can stay with him. Dont send me any more money to come home on because Ill see if I can help out by not spending any more money than I have to. Write again soon and tell me what you think of it. I have paid all my bills and I will be able to make out O.K. Write soon. Much Love Your 16 yr old Son Arthur Merrill Oliver Smith (Amos) (Budge) (Smith).
