Description
23-33 characters per column; 6 columns per page. Text-block height: 230 mm. Eight vols. (190 x 8600; 10,000; 9300; 8200; 8900; 8600; 8000; 7000 mm.). Tall narrow 8vo, orig. semi-stiff dark blue boards (minor rubbing), orig. block-printed mica-dusted title labels on upper covers, each entitled “Shinpan Myohorengekyo” [“new [carved] boards for the Myohorengekyo”] & volume number. [Japan]: early to mid-Edo? A very rare — apparently unrecorded — edition of the complete Lotus Sutra, handsomely carved throughout in hiragana, allowing those unskilled in reading kanji to study the text. The vast majority of sutra printed in early Japan were carved in kanji (kanbun style) or a mixture of kanji and hiragana. NIJL lists only two editions of the Lotus Sutra printed entirely in hiragana: a 1682 edition, which is clearly not our edition, and another, undated, edition held by the Sakamoto Ryumon Bunko of Nara. Sadly, their copy is not digitized, and we are unable to compare it with our example. In our copy, only the text titles on the first column of each volume are carved in kanji; the text is carved entirely in hiragana. The Lotus Sutra is the most influential of all sutra and “was highly influential in East Asia, inspiring both a range of devotional practices as well as the creation of new Buddhist schools that had no Indian analogues.”–Buswell & Lopez, eds., The Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism, p. 730. For several Japanese schools of Buddhism, the Lotus Sutra remains their central text and is considered to be the only valid Buddhist sutra for the Degenerate Age. This sutra has been printed on excellent paper, which has been treated with a pronounced sprinkling of mica dust. The printing is uniformly fine throughout, with strong black strokes. A fine set, preserved in a handsome old wooden box. Two volumes with minor worming.

Description
Los Angeles: Warner Brothers Records, 1970. Original photographic artwork assemblage for Van Morrison's classic 1970 album, , with original double exposure photograph by David Gahr, designed by Janet Planet and used by Warner Brothers Records as shooting artwork for the album cover. Production annotations, in manuscript marker and pencil, at bottom of board below the image. Annotations on verso noting, "Van Morrison 'Cover' 1884," in manuscript marker, with the "1884" being the album catalogue number, and "the band + street choir," just below in manuscript pencil. Gahr was a preeminent photographer of folk, blues, jazz, and rock musicians for over four decades, whose subjects include the likes of Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen, Janis Joplin, Peter Seeger, and many, many others. His work was regularly featured in the seminal rock magazine "Crawdaddy." Building on the critical successes of "Astral Weeks" (1968), and "Moondance" (1970), Morrison's fourth studio LP featured the highest charting single of his career, "Domino." Originally titled "Virgo's Fool, Street Choir," the LP was renamed prior to release, without Morrison's consent, by Warner Brothers. Photograph mounted on board, with a clear acrylic overlay. Original black paper overlay included but not attached. Photograph 13 x 19 inches mounted to board as created, measuring 15.5 x 24 inches. Near Fine.

Description
1892. [with original early photograph] Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1892 [actually late 1891]. Original mauve cloth decorated in both glossy and matte gilt. First Edition of the first book by Frank Norris, a romantic narrative poem of medieval chivalry, written when he was a freshman student at the University of California. (He would not graduate there, but rather in 1894 he transferred to Harvard.) His interest in France (he had spent a year at an art school in Paris) would shift toward the realistic fiction of such authors as Zola and Flaubert, with the result that this would be Norris's only such book: his next, seven years later, would be MORAN OF THE LADY LETTY in 1898, followed by his own well-known realistic novel McTEAGUE in 1899. This is a handsome example of book production -- remarkable for being effected for a college student! This is because his family kicked in the money for Lippincott to go all out -- in fact, this is considered to be one of Lippincott's snazziest productions. It is printed on heavy plate paper, with illustrations provided by ten different artists, and with silver-coated endpapers printed with an all-over pattern of roses in intaglio. This copy is in mauve cloth; other colors available (no precedence) were blue, green, old rose, orange, and white, in addition to leather. Condition is near-fine (very slight rubbing at the extremities, a touch of bubbling of the front cover cloth). YVERNELLE has always been a very scarce book -- partly because it was undoubtedly a small printing, and partly because many unsold copies are said to have perished in a Lippincott fire. Blanck 15024. Provenance: bookplate and discreet ink-stamp of J[ohn]. Philips Cranwell, author of such books as MEN OF MARQUE and SPOILERS OF THE SEA. Loosely inserted is an original photograph of Frank Norris standing, wearing suit and bow tie, from probably about 1890 (about age 20); the photograph is in fine condition, affixed to a paperboard card that has some damage on its reverse side.
