Some creases and wrinkling from mailing. Very Good
Description
14 June 1970. Letter. Some creases and wrinkling from mailing. Very Good. Fine 4-page letter written entirely in the jazz legend's hand with interesting personal content on the back of four 8-1/2" x 11" photocopies of his advertisement for "Lose Weight The Satchmo Way," often used by Armstrong as stationery to his frequent correspondent, Mr. Kauffmann. Armstrong mentions being very sick in the hospital: "I was really sick this time. Everybody thought that I would die. But the Lord Jesus -- my Doctor -- and my wife Lucille were right there with me at all times-- so I came through alright." He goes on to explain, at some length, what C.O.D. means and then mentions receiving a trombone that Kauffmann had sent to him that had belonged to Mr. Franz Schuritz who had provided Armstrong with his favorite lip salve-- Ansatz-Crème. "I won't let anyone touch (put their hands on it). It is a beautiful trombone.... Mr. Schuritz' always a dear friend of mine. I offtne [sic] think of him. God Bless his soul. You are a nice man also. SIGNED "Satchmo and Lucille Armstrong." Erich Kauffmann was the partner of trombonist Franz Schuritz

Description
1944. Adams, Ansel. Born Free and Equal published in 1944 presents a photographic and textual record of Japanese Americans incarcerated at the Manzanar War Relocation Center during World War II. The book emerged from Adams's 1943-1944 visits to Manzanar in California's Owens Valley, where he documented daily life among Japanese American families confined under wartime relocation policies following Executive Order 9066. Adams produced the work while anti Japanese sentiment remained widespread in the United States, particularly along the West Coast, and his photographs sought to portray the humanity, resilience, and civic identity of individuals imprisoned in the camps. The project stands as one of the earliest major photographic efforts to document Japanese American incarceration during the war. Adams, Ansel. Born Free and Equal: The Story of Loyal Japanese-Americans. New York: U.S. Camera, 1944. First edition, first printing. The work includes Adams's photographs taken at Manzanar after he was invited to the camp by director Ralph Merritt to record the lives of the incarcerated community. Adams explained his purpose directly in the text: "The purpose of my work was to show how these people, suffering under a great injustice, and loss of property, businesses and professions, had overcome the sense of defeat and despair by building for themselves a vital community in an arid (but magnificent) environment." The book includes portraits and scenes of daily life in the camp, such as families, farmers, nurses, students, and veterans including Nobutero Harry Sumida, identified as a Spanish American War veteran. Adams's Manzanar photographs became the basis for both this publication and a museum exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, generating public discussion about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during the ongoing war. The images combine documentary portraiture with landscape views of the Owens Valley surrounding the camp, situating the confined community within the stark desert environment of eastern California. Softcover volume measuring approximately 11 × 8 inches. 112 pages including 65 photographic illustrations. Stapled maroon wrappers with light green lettering. Minor half inch tear at the lower front spine and light handling wear; interior pages and photographic reproductions remain clean and bright. Very good condition overall and an important early photographic document of Japanese American wartime incarceration.

Description
10+[1 ad] pages with fold out facsimile of the codex at the back. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original wrappers. Limited to 250 copies. The Codex Peresianus, or Codex Mexicanus, no. ii better known as the Codex Perez, a rare Mayan volume and reproduced here. It was discovered in 1859 Leon de Rosny, among a mass of old papers in the national library of France. It consists of eleven leaves, twenty-two pages, each 9 inces long and 5 1/4 inches wide. The writing is very much defaced, but was evidently of a highly artistic character, probably the most so of any manuscript known. Its origin is a complete mystery. The papers in which it was wrapped bore the name "Perez" in a Spanish hand of the seventeenth century, and hence the name "Peresianus" was given it. By order of the French minister of public instruction, ten photographic copies of this Codex, without reduction, were prepared for the use of scholars. None of them was placed on sale. There have been published but a few reproductions of the Codex Perez. The present reproduction is an absolutely exact photographic facsimile of the original. The only alterations that have been made are that the margins, entirely blank, have be reduced in size, and certain figures, clear in the original but too faded to reproduce photographically, have been strengthened with dotted lines in order that they be not lost in the reproduction. The figures are exactly the size of the original, and the format of the original has been followed identically, even to the accordion-pleat fold which permits the book to be read across in sequence, as was the Mayan custom. The original is on a fibrous paper made from the leaves of the maguey plant and coated with a whitish, durable plaster. Condition: Some pencil underlining, previous owner's name to front wrapper else a very good copy.

Description
New York: Henry Holt and Company. Very Good+. 1918. First Edition. Hardcover. (decorated cloth; no dust jacket) [good-looking book with light shelfwear, small light stain on spine, dust-soiling to top edge]. Novel set in a factory town in New Jersey, centering around the Zabransky family. The father, Michael Zabransky, who has come to the U.S. from Bohemia (the western region of today's Czech Republic), is a truck farmer who has established himself as a local political boss. His authoritarian ways bring him up against the German community in his village, and also against his youngest son, the American-born Stanislaus, whose most overt sign of rebellion is to allow himself to be known as "Stanley Zabriskie" in his high school. Despite his father's attempts to involve him in the family business, Stanley is determined to get an education and ends up going to Rutgers University. Commented one contemporary reviewer: "This is not the stereotyped tale of the immigrant home in the factory town; it is the story of the home life and civic life of a Bohemian family in which stirred the same impulses and emotions that characterize the American home." Another critic praised the book for its humor and also for its "complete absence of any attempt to expound or urge political doctrine and the absence of any strokes painting these newcomers to America as oppressed and miserable." The author, whose first novel this was, was just twenty-one years old at the time; he was also a journalist, wrote several more books, and was a credited screenwriter on nine mostly undistinguished Hollywood movies in the late 1930s. Hanna 96. ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." Bound in orange cloth over boards with spine lettered in black. Slight lean to spine. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: A Friend to God's Poor is the first full-length biography of Edward Parmelee Smith (1827-1876), a Congregational minister from New England and a leading light in forming an evangelical response to the Civil War and Reconstruction. The biography weaves together important strands of American church history: the reform movement, the assistance the churches gave to President Grant's Indian Policy, and the movement to bring the gospel to Africa. While he was a student at Union Theological Seminary, Smith spent his spare time working for the Children's Aid Society, going among the poorest tenements of New York City seeking out destitute children. One "cold, raw, wet day, passing up Second Street, near First Avenue," Smith noticed a pair of boots exposed under a cart box. Bending down to look in, he saw a young boy preparing for breakfast: "From a deep pocket of his long coat he brought up a dry crust, from the other he pulled out a dirty package and began unwrapping a bit of paper, then a rag, and so on for several layers till he came to the bone, which he gnawed like a dog." During his time with the Children's Aid Society, Smith helped place hundreds of such children in homes. While serving a church in Pepperell, Massachusetts, he volunteered as a delegate of the United States Christian Commission, established during the war to provide religious and relief services for Union soldiers, black as well as white. After serving in the Army of the Potomac, Smith was sent west to organize the commission's work in the Army of the Cumberland. By the end of the war, he was the commission's field secretary. After the Civil War, Smith was employed by the American Missionary Association, an "undenominational" organization formed by evangelical Christians who worked for the welfare of freed slaves. In close cooperation with the Freedmen's Bureau, Smith helped organize scores of schools for freedmen, including such institutions as Fisk and Atlanta universities, Hampton Institute, and Tougaloo and Talladega colleges. When President Grant asked the churches to assist in the reform of the United States Office of Indian Affairs, Smith offered his services and was appointed agent for the Chippewa Indians in Minnesota. Later, Grant appointed him U.S. commissioner of Indian affairs. Smith's appointment was the culmination of Grant's peace policy toward Native Americans. With this appointment, a Protestant minister became guardian of the country's nearly four hundred thousand native peoples, who were considered wards of the nation. During his two and a half years as commissioner, his conduct was the subject of six official investigations. The story of those investigations not only sheds light on the character of Edward Smith but also illuminates the working of the Indian Office during an administration too simply labeled corrupt. Five days after leaving the position of commissioner, Smith was appointed president of Howard University. He served briefly in this position before his death in Africa at the age of forty-nine. Using a wide variety of sources, William Armstrong tells the compelling story of one evangelical Christian's public service. In so doing, he provides a perspective on some of the most significant humanitarian movements of the nineteenth century.(Publisher).
