Description
8/8/24. Churchill was a Liberal member of Parliament and became Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1921. He was a signatory of the epochal Anglo-Irish Treaty of that year, which established the Irish Free State [known as the Republic of Ireland] in Southern Ireland. Churchill was involved in the lengthy negotiations of the treaty. The Irish Civil War broke out after the signing of the Treaty, with the Irish Republican Army dead set against leaving Northern Ireland in British hands. Churchill supported the government of the Free State with arms and ordered the British forces still in Ireland to assist the Irish National Army against the Republican Army. But by 1923 Churchill was disenchanted with the Liberals and had lost his seat in Parliament, and the summer of 1924 saw Churchill finally sever ties with the Liberal Party. He also engaged in talks with the Conservatives, and searched for a constituency he could serve in Parliament. On September 11, 1924, after a summer of electioneering and public speaking, Churchill accepted an offer from the Conservative Party’s Constituency Committee in Epping to stand for Parliament in the next General Election as a Constitutionalist with Conservative Party support. Britain had a general election on October 29, 1924, and Churchill was elected MP for Epping, a constituency he served in Parliament for over two decades - throughout the Second World War. He then served its successor constituency until he retired in 1964, a total span of 40 years. Soon after his election in 1924, he was appointed to the prestigious post of Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Irish Boundary Commission met in late 1924–25 to decide on the precise border between the the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland. The 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty that ended the Irish War of Independence provided for such a commission if Northern Ireland chose to secede from the Irish Free State, an event that occurred as expected two days after the Free State's inception on December 6, 1922. The governments of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and the Irish Free State were to nominate one member each to the commission. When the Northern Ireland government refused to cooperate, the British government assigned a Belfast newspaper editor to represent Northern Irish interests. Most Irish nationalists hoped for a considerable transfer of land to the Free State, on the grounds that most border areas had nationalist majorities. Their opposition - likely violent opposition - could be expected if their views were ignored. On the other hand, Northern Irelanders thought that too much land had been given to Southern Ireland already, hence their initial lack of cooperation with the entire commission idea. And they were no strangers to violence either.Arrangements for the commission were in full swing by early August 1924, though the commission did not meet until November. Having just been through the Irish War of Independence, Irish Civil War, and Irish Army Mutiny, many feared that the establishment of the commission might exacerbate the “troubles”, or at least result in instability.Typed letter signed, Chartwell, August 8, 1924, to Graham Greene, who was on Churchill’s staff when he was Lord of the Admiralty during World War I, manifesting concern about what would happen in Ireland. “I have kept your letter of the 29th July till now in the hopes of being able to conform to your wishes and to accept the very kind invitation with which, on behalf of your brother, you have honored my wife and me. I am sorry to say, however, that my plans make it impossible for me to do so. I have a political engagement on the 24th or 25th at Edinburgh, and I have arranged to leave immediately thereafter with my wife for ten days abroad.“The Irish development will, I fear, lead to so many difficulties that I shall have to be back in England early in October. In these circumstances I hope you will forgive me for not undertaking this task at any rate this year. I need not say how much we both appreciate your having wished us to pay this visit.”This is just our second letter of Churchill relating to Ireland in all our decades in this field.

Description
New York: Brown Brothers, 1920. Very good.. 135 sepia-toned or black-and-white silver prints, between 4 x 5 inches and 7 x 9 inches. Occasional minor chipping, light surface wear, most with photographer's studio stamp and penciled manuscript caption on verso. A rich and vibrant collection of crisp, professional photographs documenting the archipelago of Bermuda in the early-20th century. The photographs were created by the Brown Brothers photo agency in New York, most likely for tourism purposes. The images capture a wide variety of people, places, and settings on the islands, including street views of the capital city of Hamilton and the town of St. George; shots of beaches, coastlines, streets, public parks and other places of recreation; charming portraits of local residents; scenes of industry and agriculture; Bermuda's version of the Khyber Pass, and much more. The majority of the photographs have manuscript captions written on the versos containing valuable information on the subjects. A sampling of captions identify "a birdseye of St. George," "typical native houses -- St. George," "American tourists gathering bananas," "View from porch of Elbow Beach Hotel," "Front St. Hamilton showing pier," "One of the oldest residences -- 200 yrs old with large Royal Poinciana Tree," "Sharp rocky coast -- South Dene Bermuda," "Picking lilys for N.Y. market," "Colored children Bermuda," "Bermuda farmers home & potato field," "One of the oldest natives and his home," "Glass bottomed boat," "Flatts Village," "Strawberry Hill cut, Bermuda" and "Load of Bermuda potatoes going to dock to ship to N.Y." One photograph of four indigenous children has a lengthy caption on the back, reading: "They may be pickaninnies, but they 'su-ah' don't speak Alabama English. If you shut your eyes you would never know you weren’t; listening to pure bred little Britishers." A few of the images capture a golf match. A wonderful collection of photographs.

London: John W. Parker, 1847. First edition. Fine. Recent blue paper wraps. 61 pages with half and full titles present. Pages hand numbered in pencil on upper right corners, else unmarked. Scarce in institutions and on the market, the present copy is the only one on the market, and OCLC reports that of the 9 known copies only 2 are held in the U.S. "The public mind is at length fully awakened to the necessity of educating the people...Ignorance is no longer considered safe or creditable." On this premise, educational activist Hamilton argued that while England had firmly established the important of education for citizens, it had not yet succeeded in fully enacting it. "His Practical Remarks on Popular Education (1847) pointed to the inadequate provision of elementary education in England. He advocated additional state support for the existing school societies, an enlarged curriculum, more attention to teaching girls...and improvements in the training, status, and stipends of teachers" (ODNB). Urging readers to look to the Continent for more effective school models, he notes that "in most of the existing primary schools, the improved methods of reading and writing...are still neglected. The same may be said of the improved methods of teaching arithmetic, geography, and other branches." These subjects are critical for all English children, he asserts, regardless of class or gender. And he specifically posits the need to expand girls' access to schooling. "The education of females is a subject of paramoutn importance." Not only are women the first educators encountered by infants, but just like men, women themselves cannot be expected to properly contribute in other areas of labor in or out of the home if they lack instruction. Toward the end of his paper, Hamilton outlines his ideas for improving the education system generally, with schools running class options during day and night sessions, and teachers being given sufficient training programs and compensation. An important moment in the expansion of education in England. Fine.

Description
Chicago: William Deering & Co, 1891. First Edition presumed. Wraps. Good. Scarce and unusual trade promotion by the manufacturer of farm equipment and implements, with much of the contents targeting children! 4to. 23 by 20.5 cm. Unpaginated, 32 pp., plus wraps. The tone is set by the chromolithographic cover, which shows children sitting on a branch with elves and gnomes raptly listening to a wizard. On the back cover is another chromo of a child wearing a mortalboard and pictures of a farmer with a horse drawn reaper and a line of parrots. The suggestion being made is that this quirky catalogue will bestow erudition even on a child who peruses it. The contents within have a mix of pieces -- some light poetry, factoid quizzes, informational articles -- somewhat akin to medicine promotions of the day. The primary material, of course, consists of pieces on Deering equipment, such as the giant mower, the light reaper, the chain drive, etc. These, it can be said, are written with a light touch, allowing for easy absorption and even a modicum of enjoyment. The staples that bound the catalogue are gone, so the leaves are loose. One leaf is still uncut. Minor chipping along the spine. Age toning, and moderate wear besides.
