Description
01/08/1815. William H. Crawford was U.S. ambassador to France during the negotiations to end the War of 1812. During those negotiations, he was responsible for superintending the American consuls in Europe and keeping them informed of developments. He was also an important negotiator from a distance. He was called home and appointed Secretary of War by President James Madison on August 1, 1815, succeeding James Monroe. Crawford served in the post about a year, and was then named Secretary of the Treasury. When Monroe entered the White House, he continued Crawford in office, and Crawford remained at Treasury until the end of Monroe’s administration.  Crawford's term as Secretary of War was short but consequential. He presided over the military standing down after years of bitter conflict and also put reform at West Point, a crucial training element in the US arsenal, at the top of his agenda. To date, just 608 people have been named to a presidential cabinet post in the entire history of the United States. Of these, 91 have been Secretaries of War or Defense (the same post, but with a name change in 1947). But presidents have signed untold hundreds of thousands of appointments for military officers, State and Treasury Department posts, and all manner of positions, so any document actually appointing a Cabinet member is extremely uncommon. We have had just three, and seen barely a handful of others, in our three decades in this field. But the problem of rarity becomes more than acute when looking at the first four administrations. When President James Madison appointed William H. Crawford Secretary of War on August 1, 1815, he became just the 36th man ever named to a presidential cabinet and the 9th Secretary of War. Diligent research going back 40 years fails to disclose even one presidential cabinet appointment document for one of the 35 men to serve in cabinets before Crawford having reached the market; nor in fact could we determine the location of any possible survivors. This is, therefore, the earliest cabinet appointment document to reach the market.Document signed, by President Madison and Secretary of State Monroe, Washington, August 1, 1815, appointing Crawford Secretary of War, and stating: “That reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, integrity and abilities of William H. Crawford of Georgia, I have nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, do appoint him Secretary for the Department of War…” Treasured by the Crawford descendants, the Great Seal of the United States is still intact. Many of Crawford’s most significant papers were passed down in his family from generation to generation, their papers largely unexamined. They contain his original appointment documents, manuscripts and documents relating to the War of 1812 (including reports from the U.S. negotiators), and letters of Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Lafayette and many others. The document offered here is from the Crawford archive, was acquired by the Raab Collection directly from the Crawford family, and has never before been offered for sale.

Evelina, or the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World is a novel written by English author Fanny Burney and first published in 1778. In this epistolary novel, the title character Evelina is the unacknowledged but legitimate daughter of a dissipated English aristocrat, thus raised in rural seclusion until her seventeenth year. Through a series of humorous events that take place in London and the resort town of Hotwells, near Bristol, Evelina learns to navigate the complex layers of eighteenth century society and earn the love of a distinguished nobleman. This sentimental novel, which has notions of sensibility and early romanticism, satirizes the society in which it is set and is a significant precursor to the work of Jane Austen and Maria Edgeworth, whose novels explore many of the same issues. Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) was born in Kingsgate Street, Coleraine, Co. Londonderry, the eldest child of John and Catherine Thomson. Thomson was educated in the model school in .,Coleraine. At age fourteen he started working at the local linen industry but three years later he entered the employment of Marcus Ward & Co., colour printers and publishers in Belfast where his talent for drawing was encouraged by John Vinycomb, head of the art department. He married Jessie Naismith Miller in 1884 and moved to London, where he took up employment with Macmillan & Co. on the English Illustrated Magazine, joining some of the most distinguished writers and illustrators of the day. Thomson provided scenes of Covent Garden and Regency Bath and the illustrations for the Addison and Steele Spectator papers Days with Sir Roger de Coverley (1886-7). Thompson's style reflected the nostalgia of the time, his fine line drawing of rural characters and gentle countrified society appealing to the imagination of the public. Frances Burney (1752-1840), also known as Fanny Burney and after her marriage as Madame d'Arblay, was an English satirical novelist, diarist and playwright. She was born in Lynn Regis, now King's Lynn, England, on 13 June 1752, to the musician and music historian Dr. Charles Burney (1726-1814) and his first wife, Esther Sleepe Burney (1725-1762). The third of her mother's six children, she was self-educated and began writing what she called her "scribblings" at the age of ten. In 1793, aged 41, she married a French exile, General Alexandre D'Arblay. Their only son, Alexander, was born in 1794. After a lengthy writing career, and travels during which she was stranded in France by warfare for more than ten years, she settled in Bath, England, where she died on 6 January 1840.

Description
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1904. The Kensington Edition. Near Fine. Thirty-two octavo volumes (8 9/16 x 5 5/8 inches; 217 x 143 mm.) occupying approximately 51 inches (129 1/2 cm.) of shelf space. A Near Fine set, handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter red morocco, ruled in gilt, over pink mottled paper boards. Frontispieces, plates, and text illustrations, after the originals. Spines decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, top edge gilt, others uncut. Two volumes with small nicks or rubbing to the crowns, otherwise the leather is intact and without any cracking at the joints. "In beginning with the four great novels the edition follows the logical tradition of the first complete and revised edition published after Thackeray's death; an attempt at a strict chronological succession, which would give precedence to minor works, would confuse the reader and has only pedantic arguments in its favor. In general, the order followed is that of the edition referred to (that of 1869); but some slight variations have been made, sometimes for the sake of bringing closer together work of the same general kind, sometimes-where no important associations were violated-frankly in the interest of uniformity in the size of volumes. It is believed that the inclusion for the first time in this edition of the well-known Brookfield Letters will be especially welcome. The frontispiece to the initial volume is from the drawing by Samuel Laurence, perhaps the most satisfactory portrait of Thackeray in his prime; and in later volumes other portraits will be given, including several unfamiliar photographs" (Note to the Kensington Edition). "The novelist William Makepeace Thackeray lived at 16 Young Street in Kensington from 1846 until 1854, and during this time published his most famous work, Vanity Fair." Near Fine.

Description
New York: Mother Earth Publishing Assocation, 1917. First edition. Near Fine. First edition. 87, [9; ads] pp., with 2 portraits of Berkman and Goldman. Bound in publisher's light brown printed wraps. Near Fine with shallow chipping to spine eds, light foxing to wraps, faint creasing to top corner of cover and contents and oxidation to staples with associated rust staining. An uncommonly nice copy of a pamphlet following the arrest and prosecution of anarchist leaders Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. Published by Goldman's anarchist publication Mother Earth, the work outlines the rabble-rousing duo's trial following their 1917 arrest for violating the Espionage Act. Both were vehemently outspoken against conscription and the United States' entry into WWI, and eventually they were imprisoned, fined $10,000, and deported to Russia. The trials were a flashpoint for the First Amendment and set an unwavering precedent for deporting individuals based on their social views and opinions, a key part of the broader government efforts during the First Red Scare to target political dissidents.

Providing readers with a different restaurant choice for every day in the year (unless it's a leap year...). Ross notes in his introduction that there were estimated to be 19,716 eating places in Manhattan at the time: and so his select group of inclusions are those he considered the best, with the finest cuisine, most colorful atmosphere, and the best reliability. "This volume was compiled during the last days of Prohibition and during the first few weeks of Repeal when it was possible to discover which restaurants would obtain wine and liquor licenses and which would not. Ross grouped restaurants thematically, including "For Two Young Things Very Much in Love," "Saturday Night After the Bath is Over," "A Guide to Gluttony," and "Where the Famous Foregather." Yes, he had fun with it.

The company had enormous success and Ray lived comfortably until his death in a mansion built by Henry Clay Smith at 2901 Broadway in San Francisco. The house sits on a hill overlooking the San Francisco Bay on a lot Ray purchased in 1925 from future president, and at the time his fellow student, Herbert Hoover.
