Description
Venice: Nicolaus Jenson, 1479. 4to (212 x 146 mm). Collation: A10 B-C8; a-y8 1-68 710 (A1 blank, A2r-C8v subject index; a1r author’s prologue, a1r-7/9v text, colophon on 7/9v, 7/10r-v table of contents). [260]  leaves. Double column, 38 lines and headline. Types: 3:106G (headlines and openings of each book), 6:84(75)G (text). Capital spaces with guide letters. Rubricated: pearled Lombard initials in red, some with extenders, many with additional (slightly later?) black penwork infill, capital strokes and paragraph marks in red. Contemporary manuscript register of biblical names on recto of blank leaf A1, neatly written in two columns; contemporary manuscript foliation (1-234), leaf numbers added to the table, and a few marginal notes, all in the same hand. A few wormholes in first few quires, more worming in last few quires, light marginal dampstaining to last 8 or so leaves, a couple of red smudges (rubricator’s?) on r5v and y8r. A large copy, preserving some deckle edges. Binding: Contemporary South German or Austrian dark brown blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, covers with large central panel outlined by triple fillets and with intersecting fillets forming a saltire design, outer borders stamped with a repeated Maria banderole tool, the compartments of the panel stamped with two sizes of rosettes, a fleur-de-lis, a round ihs tool, a three-leaved plant, a teardrop-shaped dragon tool, drawer-handle tool and larger leafy plant tool; ten incised and embossed brass corner-and centerpiece bosses, two brass fore-edge clasps and catches, the leather renewed, spine with banderole tools, with erroneous 19th-century paper label “S. Hieronym Expositio antiqua,” 5 red-dyed parchment index tabs, quire liners of manuscript waste; spine rubbed, leather abraded at head and tail exposing endbands, oversewn with later thread, worming, especially to lower cover (possibly recased but apparently not a remboîtage, the worming in the inner covers matching the text block). Modern linen folding case. Provenance: contemporary manuscript imprecation against thieves on front pastedown, manuscript register and annotations as described above.  A fine copy of Jenson’s edition of this important Franciscan Biblical and liturgical aid, popular in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, containing hundreds of short entries providing etymological and grammatical explanations of terms found in the Vulgate and in liturgy. Written between 1279 and 1297, by Giovanni Marchesino, a friar from Reggio Emilia, the Mammotrectus was “maternal milk” for the uneducated clergy (the term had been used by Augustine in his Commentary on the Psalms). Using synonyms and paraphrases, Marchesino taught barely literate priests how to pronounce the Latin words from the Bible which they read aloud and sang in Church, what the words meant, and how to use them in sentences. The first and longest part, arranged in order of the books of the Bible, from Genesis to Apocalypse, provides definitions, etymology, pronunciation and declensions of difficult words. This is followed by sections on the Psalms, the Lives of the Saints, basic Biblical exegesis, information on Hebrew festivals and customs, and extensive explanations of liturgical texts, including antiphons and responses, Eucharistic prayers, hymns, and sermons for every day of the ecclesiastical calendar. Packed with information, the work remained for two hundred years “the chief manual for poorly-educated priests” (Moss). It was used by young friars, who needed to master the Biblical texts and to use them in preaching. A third part, found in some manuscripts but apparently not in the printed tradition, contained an explanation of the Franciscan rule and papal bulls related to the order. Twenty-three surviving 15th-century editions were followed by only a handful of editions in the early sixteenth century, by which time the Mammotrectus had become on object of derision on the part of the Reformists, for whom it was perhaps an unwelcome reminder of the ignorance of the clergy. Jenson’s edition essentially reprinted the 1478 edition of Renner and Bartua (Goff M238). The omitted line and a half at the end of the second column on y8v appears to have been printed in this copy (not stamped in, as in British Library copy, IA. 197929). Quire 1 is here correctly printed (cf. BMC). The owner of this attractive copy supplied his own supplemental index of names. I have not been able to identify the binding shop; the tools are not reproduced in the Einbanddatenbank, Kyriss, or Schunke Schwenke Sammlung. London: Bloomsbury, 1997 First paperback edition, first printing (number line 10 to 1), with no space between "Taylor" and "1997" on the seventh line of the copyright page, and "1 wand" printed twice in the list below "Other Equipment" on p. 53. According to Errington, "Both hardback (A1(a)) and paperback (A1(aa)) were published on the same date and neither has bibliographical priority." One of 5,150 copies. Publisher's pictorial wrappers illustrated by Thomas Taylor, with yellow, black, and white lettering, and young wizard to rear panel. Very good, with bright and clean wrappers, light wear to spine ends, minimal edgewear, a small puncture to rear wrapper ("£4.99" mostly effaced), light creases to some pages, tiny loss to half-title page and p. 53 (text unaffected), and a closed tear and light yellow staining to p. 121. Overall, a superb copy of the first Harry Potter book. Housed in a custom red clamshell box. Errington A1(aa). First published in 1997, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first book in the Harry Potter heptalogy. It introduces both Harry and readers alike to the secret, magical world of witches and wizards in Great Britain. It also sets the stage for the six subsequent novels by familiarizing readers with the villainous Lord Voldemort and how his and Harry's fates are inevitably intertwined. Although often regarded as a children's novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone topped adult reading charts in the UK, and in the United States, where it was published under the alternate title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Notably, the first printing of this book in hardcover format is exceedingly rare; only 500 copies were printed, of which about 300 ended up in libraries. Despite its small print run, the book was an immediate success, and went through dozens of print runs within the first few years after publication. . First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Very Good.

Description
Paris: Octave Doin, 1884. FIRST EDITION. Original printed wrappers. An excellent copy. First edition, the foundational work of the Nancy school of hypnotism. Bernheim (1837-1919), a professor in the Faculté de Médécine at Nancy, began studying hypnotism, suggestion and hysteria after observing Liebault’s method of treatment by induced sleep. Like Liébeault, Bernheim studied the scientific applications of hypnotism and substituted verbal for sensory stimuli; he interpreted hypnotism and its consequent phenomena as being the result of suggestion. “After two years of working closely with Liébault, Bernheim published the present work in which he stated that hypnosis was not a pathological state based on physiological processes, as Charcot had claimed, but a purely psychological state closely connected with suggestion. Bernheim was the first to state that the states of hypnosis posited by Charcot were actually artifacts produced by suggestion; he also demonstrated that Charcot’s ‘four-phase hysteria’ was not an illness but a psychoneurotic reaction caused by suggestion, and curable by the same process. He believed that suggestibility was not limited to hysterics but extended to the entire human race, and used the study of suggestibility to gain insight into human behavior. ‘Historically this conception of Bernheim’s ... should be considered the first (known) attempt to evolve a general understanding of human behavior and its motivation on the basis of the study of psychopathology rather than on the basis of philosophical systems’ (Zilboorg & Henry, p. 368)” (Norman). Bernheim here highlights the essential role of suggestion in the production and development of the very curious mental states which constitutes hypnotism in its varying degrees. He offers a careful examination, based on a large number of experiments, of all the phenomena relating to suggestion. Garrison & Morton, 4995.1; Norman 210.

Description
New Haven: Hezekiah Howe, 1829. Jones was a Yale graduate who shipped as schoolmaster aboard the frigate "Brandywine" in 1825, under Charles Morris. One of his navigation students on that voyage was Matthew Fontaine Maury. After conveying Lafayette home from his visit to the United States, the "Brandywine" joined the Mediterranean Squadron under Commodore John Rodgers, where Jones was transferred to the "Constitution." These two volumes are an account of that voyage, told in the form of 67 detailed letters, each of which is dated and contains multiple entries, as in a sea journal. Jones must have found life at sea to his liking. After returning to the states in 1828, he became a Navy Chaplain serving on several ships, about which he wrote another book. He was appointed the first Chaplain of the Naval Academy when it opened in Annapolis in 1845, where he served as Librarian as well. Later Jones joined Matthew C. Perry’s expedition to Japan, 1852-1854, and was a substantial contributor to the three-volume report of the expedition. See Smith II, 2596 - "The author served as a schoolmaster", and Drury's "U.S. Naval Chaplains" p. 114. This is quite a scarce book in the trade. It is an untrimmed copy. However, it has been rebound in perfunctory modern half calf over marbled boards. The former owner pasted his bookplate onto the title page of volume I, and it has left glue marks at the bottom of the page. The folding frontispiece map in volume II has been bound in upside down, and the title page of this volume has a faint but visible oval blindstamp of a public library. This set is priced accordingly. Two volumes, 11.5 x 19.5 cm. viii, 284; vii, 286, (1 errata) pp. b/w maps and plates.

First edition thus; 8 x 6; pp. 22; beige wraps printed in black; spine reinforced with a blue paper tape; small nicks and cuts along edges; chip to upper corner of front wrap; faint, penciled-in notations to several pages; overall good to very good condition. Title in English and Ukrainian. Stepan Vasylchenko (pseud. for Stepan Panasenko) (1879 - 1932) was a Ukrainian poet, author and educator. He made his literary debut with a Russian-language story - The Failure of Resistance (1903) - while teaching at a small, one-teacher school in the village of Potoky. Although he was criticized by some for being a typical "peasant" writer, most of his pre-Revolutionary works dealt with provincial subjects and characters intimate and close to his heart. He was arrested for participating in labor strikes, but released in 1908 after getting very ill with typhus. He was strictly forbidden to teach for the rest of his life. He wrote numerous short stories, memoirs, and poems, even while serving in the First World War. An integral part of his legacy are his plays, including the current one-act, satirical one, published posthumously at a DP (displaced persons) camp in Germany, that for a certain degree contributed to the development of Ukrainian drama.

WITH ADDED LARGE FOLDING (printer's galley, or author's graphic) GENEALOGICAL TABLE (much larger than the one published in the book, same text, but with a couple of annotations added by the author). Original gilt-stamped black cloth, dust-jacket; jacket rubbed. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, JOHN R. MILLBURN, TO HIS CLOSE FRIEND, COLLEAGUE AND CO-WRITER, "Dr. Henry C. King, With the author's compliments . . . May 2000." Very good. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO HIS FRIEND & WRITING PARTNER, HENRY C. KING. "'G. Adams in Fleet Street London' is the signature on some of the finest scientific instruments of the eighteenth century. This book is the first comprehensive study of the instrument-making business run by the Adams family, from its foundation in 1734 to bankruptcy in 1817. It is based on detailed research in the archival sources as well as examination of extant instruments and publications by George Adams senior and his two sons, George junior and Dudley. Separate chapters are devoted to George senior's family background, his royal connections, and his new globes; George junior's numerous publications, and his dealings with van Marum; and to Dudley's dabbling with 'medico-electrical therapeutics'. The book is richly illustrated with plates from the Adams's own publications and with examples of instruments ranging from unique museum pieces - such as the 'Prince of Wales' microscope - and globes to the more common, even mundane, items of the kind seen in salesrooms and dealers - the surveying, navigational and military instruments that formed the backbone of the business. The appendices include facsimiles of trade catalogues and an annotated short-title listing of the Adams family's publications, which also covers American and Continental editions, as well as the posthumous ones by W. & S. Jones." – jacket. / 'Millburn has delved profitably into a wide range of sources. Copious illustrations, many of the instruments passing through the Saleroom or in private hands, expand on those usually shown . . . a book well worth waiting for.' Albion 'In a meticulous piece of research sustained over many years, a remarkably coherent picture of the firm's history and the lives of the men behind it has been constructed by John Millburn.' Journal of the American Scientific Instrument Enterprise '. . . the impact of Millburn's work on historiography could go far beyond that of a well contextualized biography . . . this book marks a turning point in the standards necessary to produce a serious historical work on instrument makers. . . his pleasant narrative, and the use of rich and good iconographical resources, make Millburn's book a model for the genre.' Medical History '(Millburn) describes the instruments from the Adams family and their chief competitors, and he uses those instruments as evidence. He does so thoroughly and with discrimination. In order to present this evidence, he has produced a splendidly-illustrated book . . .' Canadian Journal of History 'His book contains several appendixes, one of them especially useful for instrument historians as an aid to dating Adams instruments and publications . . . very detailed . . . an excellent source of information on eighteenth-century life . . . an excellent work . . . the definitive work on the Adams workshop.' Technology and Culture '. . . this book marks a turning point in the standards necessary to produce a serious historical work on instrument makers . . . a model for the genre.' Medical History 46/3 'Millburn is already renowned among eighteenth-century historians of science . . . With this book, he has extended our knowledge in two directions, simultaneously enriching our awareness of the mid-century instrument trade, and providing a longitudinal study of how one family adapted to changing circumstances . . . The thoroughness of Millburn's research is stunning. He has drawn on an impressively wide range of sources . . . This history of the Adams family is an indispensable mine of information and research aide for anyone interested in the eighteenth-century instrument trade.' Metascience '. . . a fascinating book. Its eighty pages of notes, critical apparatus, and bibliography provide a fund of primary archival data that will be of as much use to historians of London, of business practices, and even of advertising, as it will to historians of scientific instruments. The volume is superbly produced on glossy art paper, and its 126 high-definition plates of engravings and instrument photographs render visually explicit the items discussed in the text. Dr Millburn must be congratulated on his achievement, for his book opens up a fascinating dimension of eighteenth-century intellectual and commercial life.'
