Description
New York: Printed [by the De Vinne Press] for the Grolier Club, 1887. ONE OF 250 COPIES on Holland paper and two on vellum. 180 x 110 mm. (7 1/8 x 4 1/2"). Two volumes.. GRACEFUL BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE (stamp-signed on rear turn-in), upper cover framed by multiple gilt fillets interlaced at corners, center panel with gilt lettering at head and foot, and a six-petalled gilt ornament with inlaid green morocco dot at center, raised bands, gilt-ruled spine compartments and titling, gilt-ruled turn-ins, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. Each volume WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR PORTRAIT of a main character from the novel by Alfred Brennan, dated 1907. ◆Small stain at head edge of free endpaper and flyleaf in volume I, otherwise AN ESPECIALLY FINE SET with no signs of use inside or out. With an original watercolor by a noted American illustrator and a binding by one of Edwardian England's top workshops, this is surely the ultimate copy of the Grolier Club's limited edition of Reade's first novel, printed for its distinguished bibliophile members. First published in 1852, "Peg Woffington" features the 18th century Irish actress Margaret Woffington (1720-60) as its central character and focuses on her brilliant career in the London theater and her liaison with the great David Garrick. The original watercolors are by Alfred Laurens Brennan (1853-1921), a painter and successful illustrator for national publications and for children's books who was admired for his technical virtuosity. Binders Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe met as boys attending Douglas Cockerell's bookbinding classes at the L. C. C. Central School. Cockerell was so impressed by their skill that he hired Sutcliffe as a finisher and Sangorski as a forwarder. In 1901, Francis and George went into business for themselves, and before long, they had become two of the most renowned English binders of the 20th century. The taste and technique displayed in our binding attests to their talents. According to the American Printing History Association, "No one has earned a place in the annals of American printing history more solidly than Theodore Low De Vinne (1828-1914). His encyclopedic understanding of the craft, his advancement of its technology and design, his appreciation of its history, his business leadership, and his many writings earned him, among his contemporaries, the designation 'Dean of American Printers.'" A co-founder of the Grolier Club, De Vinne designed and printed most of its publications issued during his lifetime. This set has everything a bibliophile could ask for: fine printing, original illustration, elegant binding, and outstanding condition..

Description
Two parts in one volume, 8vo (160x106 mm). [20], 438, [2]; [16], 575, [1] pp. Collation: †8 ††2 A-DD8 EE4; *8 A-NN8. Printer's device on title pages. Early 20th-century half vellum, double lettering piece on spine. Some marginal staining, small loss to the outer margin of a few leaves without loss. A very nice copy, uncut with deckle edges. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Atanagi's Delle lettere facete was first published in Venice in 1561. Atanagi had planned a second book, but his work on it was interrupted with his death in 1573. The material was gathered together and published by Francesco Turchi on behalf of Aldo Manuzio two years later in 1575. Both volumes were printed together for the first time in Venice by Altobello Salicato in 1601. Both books were put in the Parma Index of 1580, but not in those published in Rome in 1590 and 1593 (cf. J.M. Bujanda, R. Davignon, E. Stanek, M. Richter, eds., Index de Rome: 1590, 1593, 1596, avec étude des index de Parme 1580 et Munich 1582, Sherbrooke, 1994, p. 151, no. 354). The first volume contains 183 letters grouped by authors and arranged in chronological order. Most of the letters are dated between 1507 and 1558. The volume also contains the only sixteenth century printing of a satirical text on the Rome of Paul III by Jacopo Bonfadio (ca. 1508-1550), here entitled Al Furfante Re della della Furfantissima Furfanteria (pp. 323-336). The volume ends with two long letters addressed by Girolamo Muzio to Vittoria Farnese Della Rovere, Duchess of Urbino, in which the author, "in persona del Verno contra la State", paradoxically praises the winter against summer (cf. M.C. Volume two gathers 159 letters and 6 satirical texts, including the second edition of the celebrated Formaggiata, the first book on cheese ever published. A.F. Catalogo unico, IT\ICCU\RMLE\012784 and IT\ICCU\BA1E\001767.

Description
Albany: Steam-Press of C. Van Benthuysen, 1839-40. Quarto (34cm). Contemporary half-calf over paper-covered boards; [3],208pp; inserted portrait frontispiece (of Buel); text illustrations. Binding scuffed, leather on spine somewhat dry, but structurally sound and internally quite clean but for some mild to moderate foxing, most pronounced on title page and first page of text; Very Good. Bound volume of twelve issues from March to December, 1839; monthly except for August and November, for which months two numbers were issued. Buell (1778-1839) began his career as a printer and publisher; he was the proprietor of two partisan Democratic newspapers in the teens and twenties (the Ulster Plebeian and the Albany Argus). But his most important accomplishments were in the area of agricultural reform, beginning with the establishment of his own experimental farm near Albany in the early 1820s. By the end of that decade he had become a leading spokesman for "scientific methods" in agriculture; in addition to establishing a number of agricultural associations (including the New York State Agricultural Society in 1832), "...his most important accomplishment was to establish a career as an influential agricultural writer. He set the Albany Cultivator on a firm footing as one of the leading journals of its day...he included many original contributions in its pages, enlisting the knowledge of hundreds of agents and correspondents..." [ANB]. The Cultivator ran from 1834 to 1865; following Buel's death in 1839 it merged with Luther Tucker's The Gennesseean.
