Description
A Bruxelles: Chez François Foppens 1669 A scarce seventeenth century illustrated edition. Jean Baudoin (1590 – 1650) first published his edition of Aesop in Paris in 1631. The Brussels editions contain a different series of illustrations than the earlier Paris editions. Pieter Van der Borcht (1545 – 1608) had a long career working for the Plantin Press in Antwerp. He also provided illustrations for Dodoens' famous herbal. . Rebound in modern tan calf. Gilt spine with black leather morocco label. Marbled edges. Twelvemo. With engraved allegorical title-page and 147 copper engravings in text by Pieter Van der Borcht. Includes a life of Aesop by Jean Baudoin. Ink ownership signature, dated 1899, and an earlier note to preliminary blanks. Bright and fresh throughout aside from some minor toning. A very good, clean copy. Landwehr 90 (erroneously calling for a frontispiece and 148 illustrations). OCLC lists only seven copies in North America.

Description
Kirkby Lonsdale: Printed and Sold by A. Foster, 1824 Book. Fine. Hardcover. Sixteen volumes (1824-1839). First edition. Very rare! 24mo (5x2¾ inches). Approximately 275pp. per volume. Each volume illustrated with wood engravings. Half green morocco, marbled sides. Some volumes with wear to spine ends. A very good set, complete. The Children's Friend was a British journal for children, in monthly parts, first published in 1824. It was founded by the Rev. William Carus Wilson (1791-1859). Wilson if perhaps best known for being portrayed negatively as Mr. Brocklehurst in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. Offered here are the first sixteen volumes of this journal which promoted a "grim morality," and encouraging in its young audience the reading of the Bible, evangelism and charitable works. The Children's Friend was published in two series, from 1824 to 1860 and then in a larger format from 1861 to 1930. Each of the volumes is illustrated with woodcut head and tail pieces as well as full-page plates. The magazine was patronized by the Princess of Wales. Wilson founded the Clergy Daughters' school, which the Brontë sisters attended in 1824, at Cowan Bridge near Kirkby Lonsdale. Charlotte Bronte took literary revenge, perhaps unjustly, by putting him in Jane Eyre as Mr. Brocklehurst. This set is extremely scarce. Only a handful of the early volumes are listed with OCLC, Trinity College in Dublin having the most (eleven of the sixteen volumes). No one has all sixteen volumes. Also, there are absolutely no volumes having sold at auction and only one or two of the volumes are currently offered on line. [The Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books, 1566-1910: p.400 (incomplete run; not listed in Percy Muir's English Children's Book, 1600 to 1900)]..

Description
Petersburg: Alkonost, 1921. First Edition, one of 3000 copies. Paperback. Very Good+. Original wraps; pp. 36, with ads. Covers lightly soiled; spine scuffed. An extended poem in four sections -- this copy unique for the manuscript poem that occurs at the first section break. Purple ink, 10 lines, dated 14/ii/23-1/ii/23 [sic], a gesture in verse by a young lover to his girl, a ring extended. Akhmatov's hand was famous among poet friends for slanting upward -- sadly, not the case here, and the young lover remains unknown. Still, sweet. Kilgour 6.

Paris: Alphonse Picard, 1886. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. viii, 243 pp., INTERLEAVED and ANNOTATED throughout. 2,776 lots. Contemporary French black and brown mottled boards, black roan spine with four raised bands, lettered direct in the second compartment. Lower hinge and recto of final endpaper repaired, evidence of waterstaining and old mold (now inactive) on final five leaves and endpaper. Not a good copy, but priced accordingly. Priced, interleaved, and profusely annotated copy that almost certainly belonged to the auctioneer or expert, in which are listed on the interleaved sheets the bids (in code) that were received. Emile Egger (1813-1885), eminent French philologist and Hellenist, was the author of the very successful "Histoire du livre depuis ses origines jusqu'a nos jours" which was first published by Hetzel in 1880 and went through several editions. Highly curious.
