Warmly inscribed on the dedication page by Gabriel García Márquez to actress Samantha Eggar, with a doodle of a flower: "Una flor para Samantha, de su amigo, Gabriel - 2000" ("A flower for Samantha, from your friend"). A Near Fine copy in like dust jacket. Publisher's black cloth boards, sunned at top edge. With the bookplate of Samantha Eggar to upper pastedown. Some toning to upper endpapers, otherwise a very clean copy. Unclipped dust jacket faded at edges, spine, and back panel. A fresh example overall, with an exceptional inscription. García Márquez's iconic novel of love, passion, and death is considered his best alongside One Hundred Years of Solitude. The novel was García Márquez's first published after he won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his novels and short stories, in which the fantastic and the realistic are combined in a richly composed world of imagination, reflecting a continent's life and conflicts" (Nobel Foundation). It was adapted for the screen in 2007 starring Javier Bardem, Giovanna Mezzogiornio, and Benjamin Bratt. Samantha Eggar (1939 - 2025) was an Academy Award-nominated actress best known for her breakout appearance in The Collector (1965), for which she won Best Actress at Cannes and a Golden Globe, and her starring role in David Cronenberg's cult classic The Brood (1979). Born in London, Eggar began her career as a Shakespearean actor, before establishing herself in film in the mid-1960s and moving to Los Angeles in 1970. [New York: N.p.], 1935. Menu printed on orange silk (30.5 x 15.3 cm.), [1] page. Printed verso only. Menu for a banquet celebrating the 100th anniversary of the St. Nicholas Society. The menu for the banquet, held at the Waldorf-Astoria, includes some tasty dishes, including Parmesan Straws, Vol au Vont of Sweetbreads with Quenelles and Mushroom Regence. The toasts include one each to Santa Claus, Our City, and Woman. The Saint Nicholas Society of the City of New York was founded by author and diplomat Washington Irving and others as an organization to commemorate the history and heritage of New York, and to promote good fellowship among members. The first meeting of the Society was a dinner held on February 14, 1835, at Washington Hall, a popular dining and meeting locale at the southeast corner of Broadway and Reade Street. At that first meeting, 31 gentlemen signed the Society’s constitution. On February 28, the first members were elected; a total of 275. One light crease across the midpoint of the menu, otherwise fine.
