About very good.
Description
Mexico; Montana, 1926. About very good.. Approximately 200 documents and letters, totaling more than 250pp. Old folds, light wear and soiling, heavier to a few items. Significant archive of correspondence documenting the activities of the La Lluvia gold mine in Sinaloa, primarily consisting of correspondence from J.H. Pankey, the mine supervisor. The Mexican Revolution brought deep disruptions to foreign mining activity in Mexico, grinding activities to a near halt during the civil war there. In years following the war, opportunities for foreign investment in destitute Mexican companies arose. Foreign involvement in Mexican mining would return to pre-war levels from 1920 through the 1940s, though some the danger of violence and disruption persisted. This archive highlights the beginning of that return to normalcy in foreign involvement with the industry. The correspondence here is primarily between J.H. Pankey to his boss, Karl Elling, the owner of the mine and chairman of Elling Bank of Virginia City, Montana. Records suggest that the Ellings bought the property from the Mercantile Trust Company of St. Louis, who owned the mine in the early 1920s. The archive also includes copies of Elling’s outgoing correspondence from the same period, when he was also negotiating to purchase other mines. The material gives an incredibly detailed look at the calculations and logistical challenges at work in mine management. Most of Pankey’s letters give detailed accounts of the current conditions at the mine – weather, supplies on hand, the quality of the ore, and the need for constant infusions of cash to keep the operations going. The yields at La Lluvia seem to have been generally disappointing, and Elling’s correspondence shows his concerns with balancing other opportunities against La Lluvia, as well as the difficulties he has raising capital, getting his debts repaid, etc. Writing on October 5, 1925, Pankey tells his boss: "I have had a Hell of a time here with last five weeks, have not been able to run the mill only about half the time with two 8 hour shifts, first one of the pumps gave out, the feed pipe under the baler burned off. So had to close down, cool off the baler, so as we could get inside the brick work to fix it, which took the day. ... But we have everything going now, but only two shifts as it keeps me busy on repair work. I have been working 16 to 18 hours per day for the last two months. It has not rained but very little the last two months. I have water enough to run two shifts for about 30 days. I can pump some out of a well near the mill.... I have opened up an ore body on the side near the mill, which looks as it may produce considerable ore, as it is in new ground. But if it should prove to be a large ore body, we could not get out very much of it as our time expires on Dec. 12. But I believe we would be able to get an extension." Pankey spent some of his time in Mexico scouting other opportunities. Reading the correspondence here, one discerns the constant balancing act of this particular type of investment, especially for smaller operators like the Ellings, who were constantly weighing the potential of one opportunity over another due to limited capital. Many of Elling’s letters are concerned with “the dope” on various other mines, as well as the shuffle of machinery and personnel, and trying to make the best of the weather conditions. Pankey also spends time at Nogales, across the border from El Paso, detailing the transfer of equipment across the border and noting, “one has to order material in this country several months in advance.” He briefly mentions “the natives,” though only in passing and as it relates to the discovery of gold. Pankey does mention the revolution at one point, saying that if his equipment can hold up he should be able to continue his work, providing “the revolution does not put me out of business.”.

Greenwich, Conn.: The Chaspec Manufacturing Company, [n.d., ca. 1950s] [ Together with:] Arnold, Arnold. How to Play with Your Child. New York: Ballantine Books, [1955]. 4 x 7 in. [6], 185 pp. Diagrams and chapter heading vignettes. Color-printed paperback covers. Some creasing to front cover. Contemporary ink mark to fore-edge. Uniform toning due to paper quality. A very good copy. First edition of this handbook for parents on how to lead children in educational play. . Publisher's paper-covered box lid printed in color and black. 21 x 13 x 1 in. . Complete with all twenty-four rubber stamps and the four ink pads (red, blue, yellow, black) in metal tins. Also, with a booklet of paper (some blank, some used). Some general wear to box lid. Ink offsetting from stamps to inside of lid and some ink smudges to bottom of box. Ink has dried out and there is some rust to the ink pad tins. A very good copy and a remarkable survival of a rare educational toy. This educational printmaking kit encourages children to "print, invent, and create thousands of pictures and designs" using techniques like overprinting ("make any color by overprinting") and using the basic geometric stamps to make more complex scenes. How to Play with Your Child specifically addresses the topic of educational play and providing children with creative supplies: "A child of twelve who is given a saw, shown how to use it, and is steered to develop projects for himself, has a more educational and creative toy than one who is given a prefabricated assembly kit…A toy is creative if it permits the child to use many of his creative faculties; it is educational if it arouses in him the desire for experience" (p. 54). The book also includes advice on how to manage a child's independent playtime, decorate a child's room and play spaces (with a list of art reproductions to choose as décor), and select enriching books for children (with a reading list).

Description
Boston: February 18, 1841. Very good.. [4]pp., numbered [209]-212, on a single large folio sheet of newsprint, removed from a binding, with some fraying along spine edge. Center horizontal fold, minor foxing. A rare issue of the Massachusetts Abolitionist, "Published Every Thursday, by J.C. Beman, for the Massachusetts Abolition Society" and edited by Amos A. Phelps. This notable abolitionist periodical was published weekly in Boston by the Massachusetts Abolition Society (MAS) between 1839 and 1841. The Massachusetts Abolition Society was formed as a splinter group by members of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society who disagreed with the radicalism of that group and its leader, William Lloyd Garrison. The group is somewhat out of favor in present times for their active disregard for women's suffrage, as well as their conservative stance against resisting the government in its role in bringing about an end to slavery. The present issue is the last issued by the society, and contains chiefly the text of a long address by Caleb Swan, president of the Bristol County Abolition Society, as well as reports on a convention of ministers at Penn Yann in New York, the activities of relevant actors in Washington, D.C., an article on Gerritt Smith's letters, recently-passed resolutions from the Franklin County Abolition Society, two abolitionist poems, and more. The last page also prints an advertisement for the bookstore run by the MAS.

Description
[N.p., 1950. Very good.. Sepia-toned photograph, 6.25 x 8 inches. Minor dust-soiling, a few creases. An original photograph featuring the Habegger Evangelistic Party Quintet, a missionary musical group of African Americans. The typed caption in the negative reads: "Quintet - Habegger Evangelistic Party. Go ye unto all the world and preach the gospel. Mark 16:15." Somewhat incongruously, the image of the quintet features nine African-American men and women in their Sunday best (six men standing and three women seated in front of them). One of the men and one of the women appear to be holding Bibles. We could locate just a single newspaper record mentioning the Habegger Evangelistic Party, noting that they were coming to visit Bellingham, Washington as part of the Missionary Convention of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. No holdings of any kind for the Habegger Evangelistic Party in OCLC. The present photograph might be the only record of their existence, or at least of their musical group.

Description
Grand Rapids, Michigan: Medical Staff Press, L.C.C., (1996). First Edition. Signed by Bradley P. Bengtson. Quarto, black cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, xviii + 446 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: WElcome to the world of Civil War medicine. Although there has been a recent resurgence of interest in the American Civil War, to this point, very little information exists on the medical and surgical aspects of the Civil War. George A. Otis, M.D., the Second Curator of the Army Medical Museum, collected 400 photographs of soldier injuries and anatomical specimens from 1865 - 1881. He compiled them into eight volumes each containing 50 photographs with corresponding case histories. These original volumes, however, had a very limited circulation and very few complete sets still exist. This atlas presents all 400 photographs and case histories from Otis’ original volumes along with over 100 additional photographs compiled into one book. Unavailable for over 100 years, these photographs provide a graphic representation of the incredible sacrifice soldiers from both sides of the conflict made for a cause in which they so fervently believed. By reading these soldier stories and examining their wounds, the War suddenly becomes a very real and personal experience . One that you cannot distance yourself from easily. Included in this work is an informative description of Otis’ life and the historical progression of the Army Medical Museum by Michael Rhode. Following an in-depth preface describing the state of medicine at the onset of the War, individual photographs and cases bring to life the personal experiences injured soldiers faced. Aslo included is an extensive index tabulating the personal and regimental information of the soldiers, the battle in which they were injured, and the outcome of their treatement. With the use of an educational glossary, both the medically-educated and non-medical reader will gain an increased appreciation for medical and surgical care during the War. After reading this atlas our views of the American Civil War have forever been changed. We think yours will be also.

Description
New York: Farrar & Rinehart. Very Good+. 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [spine a little turned, minor visible wear at a couple of corners]. This uncommon novel "is simply the story of Nancy Prager. Raised by a devoted elder sister to care for nothing but the preservation of her lovely face and body, Nancy ruthlessly sacrificed her family, her lovers, and her husband to satisfy her mad love for her own beauty. She lived for only one thought -- to preserve her looks, as she moved like another Helen of Troy through New York's kaledoscopic society. A really extraordinary first novel, and psychologically and pathologically one of the most interesting books in years." [Quoted from the dust jacket, NOT present on this copy of the book.] According to her jacket-blurb bio, the author was a New York-based journalist who began writing fiction in 1925, and "has written and sold over a million and a half words of pulp fiction, serials, novelettes, and short stories. [She] adores writing, has no theories about it, and writes anywhere from five to fourteen hours a day." Despite the book being dubbed "a promising first novel" by at least one critic, it took Mrs. Wilson twenty years to turn out the only other one she ever published. .
