Description
Philadelphia, PA: Foreign Mission Board, National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc, 1950. Very good. 12” x 9”. Stapled pictorial wrappers. Pp. 77. Very good: a bit of light edge wear to wraps; paper clip indentation and light creasing to top edge of several leaves. This is a rare and fantastic photo book revealing the work of African American missionaries around the world. It was issued by the Foreign Missions Board (FMB) of the largest Black religious organization in the United States, the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. (NBC). In 1895 in Atlanta, three Black Baptist conventions merged to create the NBC; with a membership now in the millions it is the largest African American religious group in the country. The former conventions adapted to serve as NBC's three main boards: foreign missions, home missions and education. After some splits and separations, the constitution was amended in 1916 and the convention was soon incorporated. Per their website, NBC strives to safeguard “civil liberty, social justice, and the equality of human kind as children of God,” with “full religious liberty and spiritual independence at home and on the foreign fields.” This incredible resource has page after page of extensively captioned photographic images, 200 in all, revealing the FMB's efforts in Africa, the Bahamas, Nicaragua, India and Japan. Many shots depict buildings, some under construction, showing a “girls training school in Sierra Leone,” “the Carrie V. Dyer Memorial Hospital at Monrovia” and the Bahamas' “inter-island mission setup with the fellowship of 76 churches.” Countless images identify FMB leaders and staff members, as well as “Native” teachers, preachers, nurses and “Chiefs of Tribes.” Workers are shown training young men “to get better and bigger crops,” “visiting and teaching mothers how to care for their homes and children,” at dedications for new temples and leading students in “physical training.” There are group shots of school classes, “candidates for Baptism,” religious leaders and “the executive board,” along with an “inside view” of a chapel service and even a “double wedding at the Mission.” The book also holds two great maps, showing the missions around the world and the station in Nigeria, respectively, as well as a brief FMB history at the rear. OCLC shows two entries for a book with this title, one of 1951 with fewer pages and one holding, and the other dated 1953, with four holdings. Our copy is not dated, and the only internal clue is an image of the “late superintendent” of the South Africa station, Rev. J.S. Mahlangu, who died in April 1949.
