Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2011. Hardcover. New. Julie Mehretu. The format is 14-1/2 x 9-3/4 inches, 112 pages. The introduction was set in 12-point Garamont Monotype. The English translations were handset in 18-point Garamont. Garamont is a type by the prolific American designer Frederic W. Goudy, based on the sixteenth-century Garamond rendered in the later style of Jannon and more recent French versions. The Greek was composed on computer in digital Adobe Garamond Greek type, printed from polymer plates. The book contains 20 double-page Mehretu prints in black and white printed from polymer plates. On the title page, introduction, and colophon are 23 wood engravings cut by Anita Cowles Rearden in the 1880s, intended as illustrations for a book on Sappho and Alcaeus by her husband Judge Timothy Rearden, now printed for the first time (at the time the book went unpublished due to the author’s unexpected death). All printing is by letterpress. The paper is Revere, an Italian mould-made sheet. The sections are handsewn with linen thread over vellum tapes, that are laced through the joints of the spine, which is also of vellum, stamped in gold with the poet’s name. The boards are covered with a fine binding cloth manufactured in Germany, of a light green color, imprinted with a portion of an image from the extra suite of prints in darker green. The book is presented in a cloth and paper covered slipcase with spine stamping similar to the book’s. The edition is limited to 400 numbered copies for sale. All copies are signed by the artist. In addition to the prints in the book, Julie Mehretu has made four additional prints, images not in the book, that are offered as an extra suite in a portfolio. Three of the four have been hand colored. The suite of prints by Julie Mehretu is entitled Sapphic Strophes. The individual prints are titled Sapphic Strophe 1 through 4, in a printed statement of limitation on the back of each print. The prints are relief, printed by letterpress from polymer plates, all four from negatives scratched by the artist with an etching needle, two with overlay plates made from negatives of scans of ink drawings on Mylar. The paper is Italian mould-made Revere, 15 x 20 inches. The prints are signed by the artist and numbered 1/40 through 40/40 for sale. In "Poetry of Sappho" painter Julie Mehretu has created prints for her first artist book, one of Arion’s most beautiful and ambitious publications. Twenty prints by Mehretu alternate with pages of poetry in Greek and in English. Four additional prints with hand coloring are presented in portfolio. The new English translations were commissioned for this edition from poet John Daley and classicist Page duBois. Sappho is the supreme lyric poet of antiquity. Celebrated by Plato as the "Tenth Muse", she left a literary monument comparable to the other precious ruins of the ancient world. As with its time scarred architecture, mutilated statues, and partial inscriptions, what remains of her poems are fragments of a vanished whole, and all the more resonant for being so. The only woman whose poetry has come down to us from antiquity, Sappho wrote more than two and a half millennia ago, a century after Homer, but before the great age of Greek drama and philosophy. Her subject is not war and the state, but individual emotion and the enjoyment of beauty, expressed in unforgettable images. The theme of lost civilizations implicit in Sappho made the ancient Greek poet a fruitful subject for Mehretu. Julie Mehretu is one of the most admired artists working today. An Ethiopian-American painter known for her densely-layered abstract images, she lives in New York City and works there and in Berlin. She received the 2005 MacArthur Fellowship. Julie Mehretu has made twenty double-page prints for the book, to be viewed between the facing pages of Greek texts and English translations, alternating throughout. The printmaking process began with the artist scratching the emulsion side of negative film with an etching needle. Light passing through the lines allowed the negative to serve as the direct matrix for a polymer platemaker. The plate, of thin steel, with raised plastic areas for the image, was then mounted on a magnetic base, making the printing surface the same height as type for letterpress printing. The linear effect is that of an etching, though the print is relief, not intaglio. The artist used different gauges of etching needles so that the line width varies and a layering effect is created. For some images, Mehretu drew with pen and ink on mylar over proofs of the images created with the scratched negatives to add yet another layer with a different linear quality, drawn rather than scratched. These elements are heavier yet and seem to rise above the surface of the etching-like imagery. Please note that, while the prints in the suite are new and in fine condition, the portfolio which contains them has a few spots of light wear. ___POSTAGE: Please note that additional postage may apply as the book with the extra suite is unusually heavy; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. INTRODUCING VERNIER'S FAMOUS SCALE, A DEVICE "INDISPENSABLE TO ALL REFINED MEASUREMENT" (E. R. KIELY), WITH A FOLDING ENGRAVING OF THE INSTRUMENT 8vo (15.9 x 9.1 cm), [6[ ff., [1]-122 pp., with [1] folding plate [BOUND WITH:] WURSTISEN, Christian. Elementa arithmeticae, logicis legibus deducta, in usum Academiae Basil. Basel, Sebastian Henricpetri, April 1602. 8vo. 182 pp., (1) f. Bound in 18th-century speckled calf, spine gilt with flowers, red morocco lettering piece laid to spine, gold-tooled board edges, red edges, bookplates of Earls of Macclesfield and Erwin Tomash inside upper cover. Annotations on front flyleaf; Macclesfield blind stamp on first two leaves, short mend to plate, only the occasional minor stain to the Vernier; minor toning, worming and dampstaining to the Wurstisen, a marginal mend to the final leaf. Very rare first and only edition of the mathematician Pierre Vernier's (1580-1637) landmark work introducing his invention of an ingenious new scale " here illustrated with a fold-out engraving " designed to greatly increase the accuracy of mensuration instruments. The scarcity of this treatise belies its broad impact on many categories of scientific instrumentation, including astronomical quadrants, calipers and micrometers, navigational sextants, and surveying theodolites, with several of these categories today still regularly relying on the so-called 'vernier scale'. A device "indispensable to all refined measurement" (E. R. Kiely, p. 176), the vernier scale ranks among the great achievements in precision instrumentation which propelled the Scientific Revolution in the 17th century and beyond. Vernier's innovation was to add a short auxiliary scale which slides along the divisions of a standard graduated instrument, thereby allowing a viewer to take readings which fall between two graduation markings with much greater precision than could be achieved by simple estimation. Vernier states that his instrument--a quadrant with an attached vernier scale--was designed "for the perfection of the mathematical sciences, principally for observing the movements of the heavens, determining longitude and latitude, and in land surveying" (fol. A1r). An improvement on a concept proposed by Christopher Clavius (1538-12) in his Geometrica practica (1604), Vernier's device as described in the present treatise of 1631 could achieve an angular sensitivity of better than one third of a minute of arc: "By 1760 further refinements such as the use of a magnifying glass to view the vernier improved the precision on large quadrants to 1/2 second. Linear scales achieved a similar degree of precision" (J. J. Roche, pp. 57-8). The name 'vernier', now widely applied to the small movable scale attached to a caliper, sextant, barometer, or other graduated instrument, was given by the astronomer Jrme Lalande (1732-1807). Lalande showed that the name 'nonius', after Pedro Nunes (1502-78), which was customarily used to describe Vernier's invention during the 17th and 18th centuries, belonged more properly to a different contrivance. The name 'nonius' continued to be misapplied to the vernier even into the 19th century. Vernier does, however, give credit here to both Clavius and Nunes for inspiring his invention (p.l. 3v), and he additionally notes how his instrument would allow astronomers to improve upon Tycho Brahe's method of reading arcs and circles (p.l. 3v; H. C. King, p. 94). Vernier's La construction, l'usage, et les proprietez du quadrant nouveau de mathematique is a rather unusual example of a scientific book--especially one of such importance--published in the Low Countries during the period of Hapsburg rule, a time of relatively little independent scientific or technological work in Belgium. The present work affords an important exception. Vernier worked as a military engineer for the Spanish Hapsburgs, the rulers of his native Franche-Comt. In his dedication, Vernier writes that he presented the new instrument to the Infanta of Spain and Portugal, Isabelle-Claire-Eugenie (1566-1633) in Brussels in 1630, who encouraged him to describe it in the present book. The treatise also contains a trigonometry table for sines and a method for deriving the angles of a triangle from known measurements of its sides, both of which are helpful in using the vernier-scale quadrant. Bound with Vernier's work in the present volume is the 1602 edition (first in 1579) of the mathematician Christian Wurstisen's (also 'Urstisius') (1544-1588) Elementa arithmeticae, logicis legibus deducta, a popular practical treatment of proportion, especially the 'rule of three', and the application of this rule to commercial problems, as well as square and cube roots. OCLC locates U.S. examples of Vernier's La construction, l'usage, et les proprietez du quadrant nouveau de mathematique at the New York Public Library and Emory. No copies of the 1602 edition of Wurstisen's Elementa arithmeticae, logicis legibus deducta are recorded in the U.S. * Tomash and Williams ADD 45 & 50; STCV 6830631; USTC 1004804; VD17 32:632759C; E. Description
"The American Sloop-of-war SARATOGA, Capt. Walker, arrived at this port on the 29th ult., in 25 days from Japan, which is the shortest passage ever made. The S. brings Capt. H.A. Adams, U.S.N., as bearer of despatches to the Government at Washington. The point of interest in this intelligence is the fact that Com. Perry concluded a TREATY OF AMITY AND FRIENDSHIP with the EMPIRE OF JAPAN..." The Friend was the mouthpiece of Congregational missionaries and reported everything from important local Hawaiian issues to international news reprinted from eastern sources. The nine months covered here feature a great deal of the news of the day, ranging from war between England and Russia to lots of whaling and maritime news including shipping arrivals and departures, the discovery of new sperm whaling grounds, naval intelligence, all peppered with a liberal dose of good old fashioned conservative proselytizing. This particular volume was sent from Sag Harbor, New York to Thomas Spencer, a Rhode Island sea captain who went native, opening a successful ship's chandlery and marrying a local girl. [HAWAII]. Newspapers. Bound volume of The Friend (Honolulu, HI) containing 22 consecutive issues dated from Feb 1, 1854 through Oct 25, 1855.This volume has the first report of the death of Hawaiian King Kamehameha III, including the order of procession (Jan 1, 1855 issue) and the first report of the signing of the US-Japan Treaty negotiated by Commander Matthew Perry (May 6, 1854 issue), and an Independence Day celebration (July 6, 1854 issue). The Friend was a local newspaper published from 1843 to 1954. Published by and for the missionaries, it is invaluable as a source of information concerning the activities, experiences, and accomplishments of the 19th-century Congregational missionaries to Hawaii as well as 20th-century figures and the development of the United Church of Christ in Hawaii. Today, The Friend is the newsletter of the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ. Thomas Spencer (1815-1884) was a whaling captain out of Warwick, Rhode Island. He was stranded in the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and decided to remain there. He opened a very successful ship's chandlery in Honolulu and later purchased property on the "big" island in the village of Hilo. His brothers also joined him in Hawaii. He was a notorious celebrity, well-liked by all, and especially supportive of the Hawaiian royal family. He is buried in Oahu. The children of Thomas Spencer and Makaleka (Margaret) Robinson were Thomas Spencer Jr., and Charles, Lucy, Jennie, Lily, Helen, Margaret, and Kaliko Spencer.

Santa Rosa: Black Sparrow Press, 1987. First Edition. Fine. First edition, signed limited issue. A bibliographical oddity with an original acrylic painting by Charles Bukowski tipped in at the front free endpaper, though not called for. Conforms to Krumhansl 103c: hardcover, numbered and signed issue, this being number 35 of a limited 400 copies. Neither Krumhansl nor Debritto mention an issue with an original painting tipped in. This copy was purchased from Beyond Baroque Books in Hollywood, CA, where founder and owner Sholom "Red" Stodolsky's commitment to promoting a renaissance in American literature attracted customers and friendships with authors such as Bukowski and Henry Miller. Red is immortalized in Bukowski's poem "Red" (1989) and in his final novel Pulp (1994). The book's former owner, who used to frequent Beyond Baroque Books, has conveyed to us that Bukowski gave Red paintings, which is how this copy ended up like this. It is not known who tipped in the painting, though it was not issued by Black Sparrow Press with it.Bound in publisher's paper-covered boards over dark blue spine cloth with paper title label. Near Fine with light wear, in publisher's unprinted acetate jacket, slightly clouded and lightly rubbed. A great copy with an interesting backstory that hearkens back to one of Bukowski's old haunts.

Description
El Reno, Ok: Baker Hickman Music Co, 1890. Very good.. Three cabinet card photographs, each 4.25 x 6.5 inches on slightly larger mounts, two with ink stamp on verso reading "Sold by Baker Hickman Music Co. El Reno, Okla." Minor edge wear, a few small bumps, scattered minor soiling. Three rare images featuring hundreds of hopefuls preparing to participate in the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. The images were taken in El Reno, Oklahoma, often referred to as the "Home of the Land Rush." Each of the images are filled with men in the streets, on the sidewalks, on top of trains near the El Reno depot, standing under tents, and in horse-drawn wagons. One of the images features a number of tents set up in the streets of El Reno, one of which belongs to Crow & Jones who sport a sign reading, "Filing Papers Made Here." Many of the businesses on this main strip in El Reno can be seen in the background, including the meat market, Miller's Drugs, Cook & Shriver Furniture and Carpets, among others. It appears that all three photographs were taken from the roof of a train car. "On April 22, 1889, the area's unassigned lands were opened up for settlement, which quickly became known as the great Oklahoma land run. When the signal was given along the outer boundaries, the Fort Reno soldiers were assigned to keep order among the many rushing pioneers flooding the area. No sooner was the land opened for settlement when the Rock Island Railroad began to build a line from Caldwell, Kansas, to the Canadian River's south bank. Near Fort Reno, a settlement had sprung up called Reno City, which quickly decided to relocate nearer the railroad. Buildings, pioneers, and businesses wasted no time uprooting and moving the entire town, which they called El Reno. In January 1890, the first train arrived in the community, which quickly became a rail center for the productive wheat harvests of Canadian County. In March of 1890, El Reno has named the county seat" - Legends of America website.

Description
London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. FIRST EDITION. 206 x 142 mm. (8 1/8 x 5 5/8"). xx, 266 pp. Very pretty publisher's royal blue cloth, stamped in gilt, upper cover with thick-rule frame, central panel with floral spray cornerpieces, central coat of arms designed by the author, smooth spine with gilt title banners and sprays of flowers, all edges gilt. With one chromolithograph, 11 full-page engravings, and 250 illustrations in the text. Front free endpaper with ink ownership signature dated 1865. Negligible wear to corners, spine ends pushed in (as almost always), but still quite a fine copy--clean, bright, and fresh inside and out. In an attractive and extremely well-preserved publisher's binding, this is an excellent copy of an extensive treatment of perfumes, including their history, uses around the world, materials, and modern production techniques. With the aid of copious illustrations, the author describes the use of scents in Egyptian mummification, Jewish rites, Greek and Roman cosmetics, Turkish baths, Hindu worship, and rituals of "uncivilized nations," and describes other cosmetics, hairstyles, and beauty practices across many cultures and time periods. He ends the volume with chapters on perfume manufacturing and the principal materials used in perfumery, noting that most materials grow best in warmer climates--particularly the south of France. He also describes adopting novel scents found in Australia, such as eucalyptus, which had hitherto only been used in paint. Eugène Rimmel (ca. 1820-87) was born to a French parfumier family, and, at a very young age, established his own premises in London in 1834. According to DNB, "In his laboratory Rimmel developed some of the earliest commercially manufactured beauty products," including "the first factory-made, non-toxic mascara." A talented businessman and promoter, he built a sizeable fortune by exporting his cosmetics and perfumes around the world. Rimmel cosmetics is still in operation today. Copies of this first edition are around, but they seem all to be in unpleasant condition..

(title, texts, notes), 23, [3] (blank) pp. Narrator's text in English with some German; preliminaries with full French and German text. Chorus in transliterated Hebrew. Series statement to lower wrapper: International Contemporary Series. From the collection of noted musicologist Stanely Boorman, with his signature to front flyleaf and occasional annotations in pencil. Wrappers lightly worn and browned; small price stamp to upper outer corner of upper. First Edition. Rufer (E), pp. 73-74. GA B/19, pp. 63-64. "The plot of the "Survivor from Warsaw," which Schönberg wrote himself, describes a scene, typical of national socialism's organized terror, of roll-call selection, where the human inventory was inspected, and those sentenced to death were pulled from the prisoners' ranks; in this way, it was possibly to portray the significant patterns of everyday life in the concentration camps. Schönberg's literary method of obscuring the Warsaw Ghetto - the symbolic location - by focusing on a locationally indefinite episode along the continuum of a larger historical process, entails that it remains factually undefined, as well. It is not, however, the authenticity of the details, but rather the interpretation thereof that is important for the reading and understanding of the terror of extermination as the signature of modern social history: "Now, what the text of the Survivor means to me: it means at first a warning to all Jews, never to forget what has been done to us, never to forget that even people who did not do it themselves, agreed with them and many of them found it necessary to treat us this way. We should never forget this, even such things have not been done in the manner in which I describe in the Survivor. This does not matter. The main thing is, that I saw it in my imagination." (Letter to Kurt List, November 1st, 1948)" Therese Muxeneder © Arnold Schönberg Center.

"Chaliapin's international career began in 1901 at La Scala, as Boito's Mefistofele... He was a perfectionist as far as his own make-up, costuming and musical and dramatic preparation were concerned, and untiringly attentive to the staging of the operas he appeared in. Those who worked with him or who knew him off stage testify to his almost superhuman vital force, warmth and fierce intolerance of artistic mediocrity." Description
Allentaun: Blumer Druckerei, 1830. Folio broadside: 335 x 215 mm., [13 ¼ x 8 ½ inches]. Printed in two columns on blue paper; heavily stained, some tears at folds; expert paper repairs to folds. Rare broadside issued as part of a confirmation ceremony presided over by Andrew Zeller (1755-1839), one of the early bishops of the United Brethren Church in America. Following the example of the Methodists, this German language ministry of the UBC, used revivals, camp meetings and song as a way of ministering to its German American Evangelical congregation. The 'Confirmation Song', comprised of three hymns, was part of the traditional ceremony celebrating the congregant's admission to full membership in the church. The song is attributed to Heinrich Albert (1604-1651) and was used by Bach in his vocal works. The broadside is printed by Alexander Blumer, son of the Reformed pastor Abraham Blumer. He began printing in the late 1820's and his company, under a number of partnerships lasted until 1856. This broadside is identified by Herman Wellenreuther and dated ca. 1830. Another example of the Confirmations =Lieder printed in 1850 by Blumer is described and illustrated by Don Yoder in his book on Pennsylvania broadsides. It is also printed on blue paper. This broadside is not cited in OCLC and appears not to be in the collections of the Library Company or the American Antiquarian Society. Herman Wellenreuther, Citizens in a Strange Land, Penn State University Press, 2013, note 7, p. 299. Stephen Nolt, Foreigners in their Own Land, Penn State University Press, 2002, pp. 50-51. Middleburg: : Printed by Thomas Berry, according to the Dutch Copie, 1673 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition of the English translation, preceded by a Dutch edition printed at Amsterdam the same year. Octavo. 20.5x15 cm. Pp. [ff. 60]. A few woodcut initials, printer's woodcut device on title. Later plain gray wrappers. Circular stain to front wrapper. Leaves lightly toned, lower corner of first 15 leaves curled. A very good copy. The Third Anglo-Dutch War was a military conflict between England and the Dutch Republic, that lasted between April 1672 and early 1674. It was part of the larger Franco-Dutch War. Finally, the Parliament of England, fearful that the alliance wth France was part of a plot to make England Roman Catholic, forced the king to abandon the costly and fruitless war. Hill was at the time pastor of the Scottish church at Middleburg, Zeeland, and was paid a stipend by the Provincial States. On publication of the present work, in which he advocates the English alliance, and vindicates Charles II from suspicion of popery, he was ordered to leave Zeeland, with permission to return at the close of the war. Charles rewarded him for his pamphlet with a sinecure of eighty pounds a year and the offer of a bishopric, which Hill declined. He returned to Holland in 1678 and became minister of the English Presbyterian church at Haringvliet, Rotterdam. [Wing: H-2000]. Full title: The Interest Of these United Provinces. Being a Defence of the Zeelanders Choice. Wherein is shewne, I. That we ought unanimously to defend our selves. II. That if we cannot, it is better to be under England than France, in regard of Religion, Liberty, Estates, and Trade. III. That we are not yet come to that extremity, but we may remaine a Republick. And that our Compliance with England is the onely meanes for this. Together with Severall Remarkes upon the present, and Conjectujres on the future state of Affaires in Europe, especially as relating to this Republick..

Description
29 pp. 8vo (206 x 132 mm.), disbound, stitched as issued. Paris: Henry & Olivier, 1815. The scarce catalogue of an auction directed by Bon-Thomas Henry (1766-1836), first a painter, then a respected dealer and tasteful collector. The supposed consigner “La Baronne de V***ez,” was very probably fictitious. This sale, consisting mostly of Northern pictures, offered 76 lots of paintings and 11 lots of engraved stones. Henry has contributed informative descriptions for most of the pictures. Attributed here to P. de Hooch, lot 36, now at the Frick, is today credited to Hendrik van der Burgh. Nice copy, a little foxed. Stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on upper wrapper. ❧ Lugt 8764. Oxford Art online (Henry)–“He studied under Charles Landon and Jean-Baptiste Regnault. In 1793 he began to deal in pictures and until 1812 spent part of his time travelling abroad (mainly in Italy) to increase his knowledge of art. In October 1816 he was appointed Commissaire-expert des Musées Royaux, a post he held until his death. Between 1810 and 1830 he assembled an eclectic collection, purchasing either privately or at sales, among them the posthumous sales (1826 and 1827) of Vivant Denon. His tastes in Italian art ranged from the work of Fra Angelico to that of the 17th-century Bolognese masters…In 1834 Henry offered a large part of his collection to the town of Cherbourg, and on 29 July 1835 a museum to house his works was opened on the second floor of the Hôtel de Ville; it was later named the Musée Thomas-Henry.”.

Minneapolis: University of Minnnesota Press, 1929. First edition. PIONEERING ATLAS OF HUMAN FETAL GROWTH. 11 1/2 inches tall hardcover, blue cloth binding, gilt title to cover and spine, institutional library bookplate to front paste-down (no other library marks), i-xxiii, 367 pp, 73 figures. Very good+ in custom archival mylar cover. RICHARD E. SCAMMON. In the first half of the 20th century, the noted developmental anatomist (and first Dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School), Richard E Scammon, explored the geometric relationships of the frontal fontanelle in human infants (Scammon and Adair, 1930). Richard E. Scammon's article, "The First Seriatim Study of Human Growth," provided one of the best-known visuals in the field of human biology. Scammon resurrected longitudinal height data of one child from Buffon's Histoire Naturelle, converted them to metric, and plotted these measurements as a function of age. The result was the first graph of one individual's growth curve from birth to 18 years of age. This image was subsequently reproduced in numerous texts on human growth and biology. Published in 1927, Scammon's article provides a snapshot of the state of growth research at the time and gives a (literal) picture of the future of human biology. LEROY ADELBERT CALKINS (1894-1960) served as chair of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Kansas from 1929 to 1959.

Description
New York: Farrar & Rinehart. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. [moderate shelfwear to lower extremities, light foxing to both pastedowns; the jacket is worn along the top and bottom edges, with various tiny nicks and a bit of creasing, and there's some scuffing to the spine panel]. This novel "is simply the story of Nancy Prager. Raised by a devoted elder sister to care for nothing but the preservation of her lovely face and body, Nancy ruthlessly sacrificed her family, her lovers, and her husband to satisfy her mad love for her own beauty. She lived for only one thought -- to preserve her looks, as she moved like another Helen of Troy through New York's kaledoscopic society. A really extraordinary first novel, and psychologically and pathologically one of the most interesting books in years." According to her jacket-blurb bio, the author was a New York-based journalist who began writing fiction in 1925, and "has written and sold over a million and a half words of pulp fiction, serials, novelettes, and short stories. [She] adores writing, has no theories about it, and writes anywhere from five to fourteen hours a day." Despite the book being dubbed "a promising first novel" by at least one critic, it took Mrs. Wilson twenty years to turn out a second book, which also turned out to be her last. .

Description
Garden City NY: The Sun Dial Press. Very Good in Fair dj. (c.1936). Reprint. Hardcover. [good sound copy, some light dampstaining on the top of the text block but no bleed-through onto the interior, one-time owner's initials plus date & place of purchase written in ink along bottom edge of rear endpaper and pastedown; the jacket is worn, with extensive internal tape-reinforcement (top and bottom edges and all folds), and has been amateurishly "patched" in a couple of spots along the top edge to fill in some small chips]. (endpaper maps) "Bertram Lynch of the Permanent Central Board of the League of Nations, and his man Friday, Robert Deane, are called upon to solve a bizarre and baffling mystery [when] a wave of murder strikes the Fijian Islands in a manner to threaten gravely the Islands' political and social organization." This appears to have been one of the earliest titles published under the Sun Dial Press imprint; judging from several code numbers found on the dust jacket flaps, it was likely issued in the same year as the first (Doubleday, Doran & Co.) editiion. The rear jacket panel bears "An Announcement" about Sun Dial Press books, described as "a fresh, new series of titles, many of which you have watched grow into nationwide best sellers"; moreover, the size and heft of the book are commensurate with the first printings, unlike Sun Dial Press offerings of later years, which tended to be smaller and more cheaply-produced than the original editions. .

Berkeley: Bullshit & Society, 1969. Pamphlet. 58p., 8.5x11 inches, mimeographed journal, stapled in upper left corner, some rust at the staple, otherwise very good condition. First and (apparently) only issue of a journal produced by the Radical Caucus of the UC Berkeley History Dept. It reprints Jerry Farber's "The Student as Nigger," "They Teach Us Alienation" by James O'Connor, Viennese painter Friedereich Hundertwasser's "Architecture Boycott Manifesto," "Fat-Cat Sociology" by Martin Nicolaus, and Cuban novelist Edmundo Desnoes' "The Secret Weapons." More significantly the issue also features a lengthy debate between PL and non-PL factions of SDS at UC Berkeley, along with a response by David Negus, and an account by past president of SDS Carl Oglesby of liberal overtures by Businessmen's International to SDS (via Oglesby), along with a reply by Andrew Levine of Columbia SDS. This would appear to have been published in early 1969, not the following winter.
