London: Printed for J. Johnson and J. Edwards, 1796. Full Description: STEDMAN, Captain J.G. Narrative, of a Five Years' Expedition, against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam, in Guiana, on the Wild Coast of South America; from the year 1772, to 1777: elucidating the history of that country, and describing its productions, viz. quadruple, birds, fishes, reptiles, trees, shrubs, fruits, & roots; with an account of the Indians of Guiana, & Negroes of Guinea. Illustrated with 80 elegant engravings, from drawings made by the author. London: Printed by J. Johnson, 1796. First edition, deluxe hand-colored large paper issue. Among Blake's finest work as a book illustrator. Two quarto volumes (11 1/2 x 9 inches; 290 x 228 mm). xviii, 407 (ie 415 as usual), [1, blank], [7, index, directions for placing the plates and errata], [1, blank]; iv, 404, [7, index, directions for placing the plates and errata], [1, blank] pp. Some plates watermarked 1794. Complete with eighty-three hand-colored etched plates including frontispiece (first volume), both title-pages with etched vignettes and eighty plates of which sixteen were engraved by Blake and five are folding (maps and plates). Two of the plates are heightened in gold. All after Stedman. Colored copies of the first edition are rare. This list of subscribers shows only about 200. Full contemporary marbled calf, rebacked. boards ruled and tooled in gilt. Spines with red and black morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. Spines stamped in gilt. Drab green endpapers. Gilt dentelles. Gilt board edges. All edges marbled. Boards with some rubbing and corners a bit bumped. In volume I, C5 with a closed tear, repaired not affecting text. Leaves Y-Y3 with neat repairs to top margins, just barley touching headline. Leaf Y4 with closed tear to bottom margin, neatly repaired and just touching a few letters. In volume II, leaf Qq3 with a closed tear neatly repaired at bottom margin, not affecting text. Some general toning and light staining, but overall very good with beautiful hand-colored plates. "Stedman, an officer in the Scots Brigade in Holland, volunteered for service against the negroes in Dutch Guiana. While out there he to all intents married the subject of Number 9 [facing p. 95], Joanna, a Mulatto, and had a son by her, who became a midshipman in the British Navy, but died young. The author emerges as a most interesting and sympathetic character. As Lowndes rightly says the book is as entertaining as a romance. It will be noticed that William Blake engraved thirteen plates, while three plates were engraved by Bartolozzi". "Many of the plates, it will be noticed, were engraved by [William] Blake, who had learnt his trade from Basire, to whom he was apprenticed for seven years from August 1772. As Keynes says in his bibliography From 1791 until 1800 Blake did much of his work as a journeyman engraver for the booksellers" (Abbey). Keynes eventually decided that Blake was responsible for sixteen of the plates. "Both text and plates made a strong impression on reviewers. The Analytical Review, XXIV (Sept. 1796), said 'The numerous plates... are neatly engraved, and are, we have great reason to believe, faithful and correct delineations of objects described in the work.' The Critical Review (jan. 1797) praised the engravings as being 'in a style of uncommon elegance'" (Bentley). Bentley 499A. Cox II, p. 285; Abbey, Travel, 719. Sabin 91075. Cundall, West Indies, 1715. Ray England 2. HBS 69040. $17,500.

Description
Lyon, France: np, 1500. 1st Edition. No Binding. Fine. SPECTACULAR RICHLY ILLUMINATED AND FINELY DETAILED MINIATURE BY THE RENOWNED ENTRY MASTER FROM LYON, FRANCE. In Luke 2.8-2.9, an angel appears before a group of shepherds, a moment where “the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified." In this magnificently painted miniature, the artist captures the glory and the terror of the moment. Two of the three shepherds hold up their hands shielding them from the blinding light emanating from the angel, whereas one has even collapsed to the ground from terror. The powerful scene is complemented by a richly illuminated border with a bird, acanthus leaves and a floral motif. Verso(miniature side) contains a large initial D (4 lines) painted in blue with a flower on a red background. Recto contains 14 lines of text with an elaborate border on the right side of the leaf. The text beneath the miniature is from the Hours of the Virgin and reads: Deus in adiutorium meum intende Domine ad adiuvandum me festina Translation Incline unto my aid O God O Lord make haste to help me Recto contains 14 lines of text as follows: tua cunctam repelle nequitiam: iter, actus, et voluntates nostras, et omnium famulorum tuorum in salutis suae prosperitate dispone: benefactoribus nostris sempiterna bona retribue: et omnibus fidelibus defunctis requiem aeternam concede. Per Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum filium tuum: Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate spiritus sancti Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum Translation: from thy Church repel all wickedness: and dispose our way, acts, and wills, and of all thy servants in the prosperity of thy salvation: and yield unto our benefactors perpetual good things: and grant eternal rest to all faithful departed. Through our Lord Jesus Christ thy son: Who liveth and reigneth, God, with thee, in the unity of the holy Ghost, world without end. The Entry Master (or Maître de l'Entrée de François Ier à Lyon) was an artist active in Lyon between approximately 1493 and 1517. He is named after a copy of the account of the royal entry of François I into Lyon in 1515 (Wolfenbüttel, Herzog August Bibliothek, Cod. Extr. 86.4; Burin, 2001, cat. 94). The scholar E. Burin has hypothetically identified him as Jean Pingault, a writer and illuminator responsible for the painted decorations commemorating the royal entry. The Entry Master is credited with numerous manuscripts, including a Lectionary and Benedictionary produced for the collegiate church of Saint-Nizier in Lyon (BM, MS 5136; Burin, 2001, cat. 74), as well as a charter relating to the priory of Saint-Albin, notable for its large illuminated page framed in a compartmentalised design (Paris, ENSBA, Masson 135). He also illustrated several books of hours, such as Lyon, BM, MS 577 (featuring an Annunciation to the Shepherds, fol. 56); Paris, BnF, latin 1404; and BnF, latin 9475. Manuscripts attributed to the Entry Master often share distinctive features, including compartmentalized borders, a characteristic rendering of grass and vegetation, and a recurring motif of a radiant cloud in the sky. These elements can be observed, for instance, in the Missal held at the Museum of the Order of Saint John in London (Burin, 2001, cat. 70). For further study, see Burin, E., Manuscript Illumination in Lyons, 1473–1530, Turnhout, 2001, especially the chapter “Entry Master,” pp. 31–33; and Hermant, M., “Production et commande de manuscrits enluminés à Lyon à la fin du Moyen Âge et à la Renaissance,” in L. Virassamynaïken (ed.), Lyon Renaissance: arts et humanisme, Paris and Lyon, 2015, pp. 274–279. Size of leaf: 213 x 140 mm (approx. 8.4 x 5.5 inches) Size of Miniature: 121 x 66 mm (approx. 4.8 x 2.6 inches) Lyon, France. 1500. In outstanding condition with a mounting square on the lower border (recto) that does not interfere with the text. Stunning miniature from a well known master illuminator.

Description
folio, one page, formerly folded, docketed on verso: "Inventory of Geo. Morris Estate 1794". Some splits along folds, and separations at fold joints, else in good, clean legible condition. Manuscript estate inventory for little known pioneer American seedsman and gardener George Morris dated 1794. There is almost no documentation for Morris and thus he is little known today, but he sold seeds to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The inventory lists Morris's surviving stock including" 31 Lots of Poplar Trees" "28 of Peach trees", as well as other types of peaches, Weeping Willows, Apple trees, currant bushes, raspberries, Peach Rose, Lombard Poplars, Roses, cherries, "1 Passion flower", a "pomegranate shrub", "1 artichoak", as well as boxes, barrels and kegs of seeds. There are also a variety of garden tools, pots, "flower glasses", frames, baskets, et cetera, as well as 2 signs, and "5 books of gardening." As well as the lot on which his garden sat. George Morris sold seeds in Philadelphia "at his garden between Market and Arch-streets, in Twelfth-street, or on Wednesdays and Saturdays opposite the Presbyterian meeting-house, South Market-street" (Philadelphia Dunlap's Am. Daily Advertiser, 26 Mar. 1791). Morris died two years before Bernard M'Mahon arrived in Philadelphia from Ireland in 1796 and began his celebrated career as seedsman and nurseryman. His death occurred five years before the arrival of Frederick Pursh in America, and Morris's role in the development of American botany and horticulture is at the present a matter of conjecture only. However, two significant clients, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison purchased seeds from Morris for their estates of Monticello and Montpelier respectively attests to his stature and reputation at the time. He must have known Bartram Humphrey Marshall, and Benjamin Smith Barton. Morris does not appear in Philadelphia Directories 1785-1794. Morris does not appear in several important studies of early American botany and gardening, including Ann Leighton's American Gardens in the Eighteenth Century, and Joseph Ewan's article Frederick Pursh 1774-1820, and his Botanical Associates, Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, Oct. 15, 1952, Vol. 96, No. 5. Description
1970. Vandergriff, Sergeant. Vietnam War photographs, 1970 to 1971, document integrated U.S. Army service during a period when African American troops were serving in substantial numbers in combat units and negotiating both military duty and racial dynamics within the ranks. The images record a tour of duty from basic training through the final days before return home, placing the archive within the later phase of the Vietnam War when troop morale, racial tension, and antiwar sentiment were all intensifying within the U.S. military. The presence of a visibly multiracial unit, with many African American soldiers, situates the photographs within the post-desegregation military structure established after World War II, offering direct visual evidence of daily life, interpersonal relationships, and combat readiness in an officially integrated force. Archive of 68 color Polaroid photographs. Vietnam, 1970 to 1971. Images measure approximately 3.5 x 3.5 inches to 3.5 x 4.5 inches, with approximately one quarter mounted to black board and the remainder loose. Several loose photographs include handwritten captions and soldiers' names on verso. The sequence follows Sergeant Vandergriff's service from training through deployment, with scenes including soldiers smoking, drinking, and posing with standard-issue M16 rifles and M1911 sidearms. Additional images show helicopter interiors and aerial views, a destroyed grounded helicopter, tanks, aircraft, drill formations, and encampments. Photographs also depict Vietnamese villages and local civilians, including two children bathing in a river. Unit identification is not explicitly stated in the archive. Other photos depict aircraft, drill marches, tanks, weaponry, villages, and locals, including two Vietnamese children bathing in a river. It is not clear which unit these troops belong to. It is possible they are in the 101st Airborne, which was prominent at both Birmingham and Evans. During the Vietnam War, African American soldiers served in disproportionately high numbers in combat roles, particularly in airborne and front-line units, at a time when the U.S. military was confronting internal racial conflict alongside external war. This archive documents the lived experience of a multiracial unit operating within that structure, showing informal social interaction alongside military activity and equipment. The combination of candid personal imagery and operational context provides material for examining race, military culture, and everyday life in a late-stage U.S. combat theater. Some photographs show minor staining and image degradation; overall very good condition.
