Description
London: Edward Moxon, 1846. Fourth Edition. 170 x 100 mm. (6 3/4 x 4 1/8"). Two volumes.. ESPECIALLY PRETTY MOSS GREEN CRUSHED MOROCCO BY FLORENCE PAGET (stamp-signed "F. P. 1907" on rear turn-in), covers with delicate gilt frame of tulips and daisies on curling stems, floral spray cornerpieces, raised bands, spine panels with gilt daisy bouquets, gilt lettering, pastedowns framed with gilt fillets, floral spray cornerpieces, all edges gilt. Wise 15. Spines faintly and evenly sunned, tiny scuff to head edge of one spine, endpapers a little foxed and with the usual offsetting from morocco turn-ins, isolated trivial marginal foxing or smudges, other insignificant imperfections, but A VERY FINE SET, clean and fresh internally in a virtually unworn binding. This collection of verse from the poet laureate's early career was attractively bound by Florence Paget, one of a small group of distinguished female binders at work in England at the turn of the century and a binder Tidcombe praises for the "pleasing appropriateness" of her work. An early pupil of master binder Douglas Cockerell, Paget exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society in 1899 and 1900. Among other distinctions, she was chosen (along with Katharine Adams and Alice Pattinson) to bind copies of the Ashendene Press "Song of Songs," the illuminated book printed on vellum that stands as one of the greatest achievements of the modern private press movement. She also had the honor of binding the Form and Order of Service used by King Edward VII at his 1902 Coronation, now in the Royal Collection. She continued binding books at Farnham in Sussex until at least 1907. When the original edition of these "Poems" appeared in 1842, it marked the first appearance of a volume of poetry from Tennyson (1809-92) since the death of his dear friend, Arthur Hallam (the subject of "In Memoriam"), in 1832; according to Thomson, it cemented Tennyson's "place as the leading poet of his generation." The first volume contains poems that had appeared in his 1830 and 1832 books, some considerably revised, while the second volume presents poems written in the intervening years. Our fourth edition is of more interest than the second and third because it includes a new poem written since 1842, "The Golden Years." Volumes bound by Paget are uncommon in the marketplace..

Description
San Francisco, 1857. Unbound. Very good. This three-page letter, datelined “Navy Yard Mare Island / September 10th 1857 Cal.”, was written by William Wallace Hanscom. Quite legible and in nice shape. Hanscom wrote this letter to a friend after arriving at Mare Island in San Francisco Bay along with his mother on the Steamer Illinois. It reads in part: “We sailed from New York on the sixth of July 1857 with about 50 passengers in the first Cabin 150 in the Second and about 200 in the Steerage which all together amounted to about 400 and which was very fortunate and pleasant they the most quiet set of passengers which were ever on the Steamer Illinois. On the 13t of July we arrived at Kingston, Island of Jamaica, after a pleasant passage of 7 days, for the purpose of taking on board 400 tons of coal which detained us about 16 hours. In the mean time several of [us] started from the vessel on a tour through the City. . .. After traveling about a few minutes for the sun was so hot . . . we were very glad to get into the shade. . .. We called at the house of an English Lady who agreed to get up a dinner for us . . . and after waiting about 4 hours we sat down to a fine dinner including almost all the fruits natural to the Tropical Climate. After dinner [we] took a stroll around the City it then being cool . . . after which we proceeded on board the steamer and after a short while . . . immense quantities of fruit were brought on the wharf . . . for the passengers to purchase. . .. There is one circumstance which to a New Englander seems rather strange that is the manner in which labor is performed . . . altogether by females even carrying coal on board the vessel . . . carrying it on their heads in half barrel tubs, while the males mainly go . . . selling fruit or baskets or some other such light work. . ..” Proceeding to the Panama Isthmus the ship stopped at Aspinwall (now Colon) which was in honor of William Henry Aspinwall, the Panama Railroad promoter, where he continued “We immediately went on shore and to stop at the hotel. . .. The only chance they have of doing business is on the arrival of a steamer. . .. At our own expense we [obtained] rooms for the night and breakfast . . . before the cars started for to cross the Isthmus on the next morning. . .. We left Aspinwall in the cars for Panama [and there] were immediately taken on board the Steamer Golden Age. . ..” After stopping at Acapulco to “take on provisions” and at Manzanillo “where we took on board $400,000 in silver bars and coin [we] arrived safely at the City of San Francisco . . . after a most pleasant passage of 25 days. . ..” Hanscom closes, reporting that he had contracted “Panama Fever [yellow fever] which . . . will probably take me some six months to recover. . ..” . A terrific recounting of a ship and rail journey to California from New York. .

Description
Chicago: Reilly & Britton Co., (ca.1912). Octavo. Bound in original coarse tan cloth with a repeating pattern of small stylized roses in ochre, orange and forest green on the cover and spine, gilt titles. Printed in soft shades of mint green and blush coral. This handsome book has 191 pages intended for the recording of events and people in the life of a young girl about to step into the wide world. The illustrations and endleaves reflect the strong influence of Arts and Crafts as well as Art Nouveau design and ornament. A pristine copy of a scarce title from one of the leading publishers of the day. There is a curious contemporary inscription on the front free endpaper. "Merry Christmas, "Harry" from Dot...." The lengthy inscription is full of references that are obviously shared secrets amongst friends, with "Harry" certainly being a pet name for a young lady. Only one page has an entry, "Dancing Parties". Dated February 18, 1916, the writer talks about attending a party with Cushman Jordan and having a "perfectly peachy" time. "Harry" discusses her dances, her dress and the electric lights. A marvelous bit of American society and publishing at the turn of the last century.

Description
Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 1884. First edition. PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED BIOLOGY OF AMERICAN WATER BIRDS BY FIRST CURATOR OF SMITHSONIAN. Two hardcover volumes 10 3/4 inches tall, mustard cloth binding, gilt title to spines, numerous wood engravings throughout. Vol. I, xi, 537 pp; Vol. II, [vi], 552 pp. Fine--as new. SPENCER FULLERTON BAIRD (1823 - 1887) was an American naturalist, ornithologist, ichthyologist, herpetologist, and museum curator. Baird was the first curator to be named at the Smithsonian Institution. He would eventually serve as the second Secretary of the Smithsonian, from 1878 until 1887. He published over 1,000 works during his lifetime. He was dedicated to expanding the natural history collections of the Smithsonian and upon his death, had done so by expanding the collection from 6,000 specimens in 1850 to over 2 million upon his death. Cited by Newton in Science, Technology, and Society in the 19th Century (2001): "One of Baird's first projects at the Smithsonian was the creation of the United States National Museum. The museum was the first U.S. agency devoted :o the study of America's animal resources. The museum is known today as the National Museum of Natural History. Because of his poor health, Baird conducted relatively little scientific research himself. Instead, he organized research expeditions, which were carried out by ordinary citizens and young members of the military. He taught these young people what to look for and how to collect specimens. He also provided them with the supplies they needed. Many of the young workers were assigned to the Pacific Railway Survey expedition of the 1850s. The focus of the survey was to study various routes for a new railway system that would extend to the West Coast."

Description
New York: Gagosian Gallary, 2006. A near-fine copy with some modest handling wear. 11 x 10 inches. 75 pages. Cloth; printed dust jacket. "In this volume, four distinct works by the important American sculptor Richard Serra are linked by a common theme: each is based on the relationship between the viewer and a horizontal or planar elevation on eye level. Elevations, Repetitions is a complex of 16 elements of different heights; Equal Weights and Measures is composed of six equal blocks of forged steel, rotated such that it's difficult to confirm that sameness. No Relief consists of two 60-foot, six-inch-thick horizontal slabs flush to the wall on opposite sides of a narrow room, compressing the elongated space. And Round is a forged steel work with a diameter of 84 inches and a weight of 50 tons, set on an unnerving slope. Serra's other recent projects include an eight-part permanent installation at the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao and a Spring 2007 survey at The Museum of Modern Art" (the publisher).

Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc.. Very Good. (c.1961). Later Printing. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [moderate wear to bottom edges and top corners of covers, one-time owner's name on reverse of ffep]. (B&W photographs) Cobb's alleged autobiography, revealed in the ensuing years to have been largely fraudulent from the get-go. The book itself was published a couple of months after his death, and the following year co-author Stump published an expose-type article in the magazine "True," purporting to tell the "true story" behind this "True Record," in which he described the difficulties of the collaboration, and in the process pretty much cemented Cobb's reputation as the meanest s.o.b. to ever set foot on a baseball diamond. He further compounded things some 30-odd years later by publishing yet *another* book about Cobb, in which he doubled down on the negativity (and which in turned served as the basis for the movie COBB, starring Tommy Lee Jones). Problem was, as several later researchers have discovered, that Stump was quite the fabulist, and that many of his claims (such as Cobb's purported deathbed confession of having murdered a man in 1912) were made up and then "authenticated" by forged documents, including Cobb's diaries. The most recent book to try and cut through all this crap and set the record straight is Charles Leerhsen's "Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty," which debunks much of the accepted knowledge about Cobb, and largely succeeds in presenting a more balanced and reliable assessment of his complex (but not monstrous) personality. .
