Wheat, noted historian and author. Original blind-stamped green cloth, lettered in gilt on spine. Rebacked with large portion of original spine laid down, else a fine copy. Scarce. Hume's first book identifies ninety-five learned societies and twenty-two printing clubs in existence in England. The printing clubs were formed to publish scholarly books on subjects from the orient to ancient Scottish history. Hume's account includes a brief history of the club, the types of books printed, the names of the club's officers, and a list of books already published.
