Description
102; 101 folding leaves. Ten juan in two vols. 8vo, orig. semi-stiff wrappers, new stitching. [China]: after 1579-1620. A rare Ming dynasty edition, printed on fine paper, of this collection of texts by the Northern Song essayist Su Xun 蘇洵 (1009-66 CE), compiled and edited by Mao Kun 茅坤 (1512-1601), of Guian (present-day Wuxing, Zhejiang). Su Xun was the father of the even more famous writers Su Shi 蘇軾 (1037-1101) and Su Zhe 蘇轍 (1039-1112). All three count among the so-called Eight Masters of the Tang and Song, a grouping that Mao Kun’s edition elevated. Mao had an official career, but left office having been victim of a smear campaign and then devoted last 50 years of his life to scholarly pursuits. In contrast to some of his contemporaries, who sought to emulate the prose style of antiquity, Mao championed the literary prose of the Tang and Song periods. To this end, he compiled a collectanea entitled Tang-Song ba da jia wenchao 唐宋八大家文鈔 [Copied Writings of the Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song], of which our volumes are part (Vols. 13 and 14). The idea of the Eight Masters — the history of which predates Mao but was firmly established by means of his collection — had a lasting impact on the historiography of Chinese literature and continues to hold currency today. There are four recensions of Copied Writings of the Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song: 1) The 1579 (Wanli 7) edition, collated and published by Mao Kun’s nephew Mao Yigui 茅一桂; 2) the 1628 (Chongzhen 1) edition, published by Fang Yingxiang 方應祥; 3) the 1631 (Chongzhen 4) edition, published by Mao Zhu 茅著; 4) the Complete Library of the Four Repositories [Siku quanshu] manuscripts, produced at the Qianlong court in the late 1770s-early 1780s, which used an edition of the third recension as its base text. This suggests that recension three was the most widely circulating by the 18th century. There were two printings of the first recension: Mao Yigui’s first printing of 1579 and a revised edition printed from the same blocks that were mended for the occasion. Our edition appears to belong to the first recension; it is unclear whether it belongs to the first edition of the first recension or to the revised edition. Only a careful comparison, character by character, of our copy with another copy of the first printing would allow us to make a definitive statement. This second printing was also produced in the Wanli period (1572-1620), but year is not known. When Fang Yingxiang produced the edition of the second recension, he used Mao Kun’s holograph along with Mao Yigui’s second, revised edition. Therefore it must date before 1628. The “introduction” (yin 引) carries the note “Collated and printed by Mao Yigui, nephew” 姪茅一桂校刊. Furthermore, the centerfold on the first folio says “Carved by Fu Ruguang” (“Fu Ruguang ke” 傅汝光刻). Fu is known to have been active as a woodblock carver in the Wanli period, and his participation in the publication of Copied Writings of the Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song is documented. Nice fresh set, preserved in a hantao. Some worming to wrappers and to first and final leaves in each volume. A full report is available upon request. Description
Hundreds of paper samples tipped-in & several text illus. 141; 121 pp. on folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. semi-stiff wrappers, woodcut title-slip on first vol. (lacking on Vol. II), orig. stitching. [Tokyo: Privately Printed], Prefaces dated 1957. First edition, limited to 100 numbered copies, luxuriously printed throughout on handmade paper, of this magnificent and rare paper specimen work. Seki (1892-1979), an executive at a Japanese paper company, was a leading historian of Asian papermaking. These two volumes contain paper samples — both examples of early printing as well as paper specimens — from China, Korea, Mongolia, Tibet, Burma, and Japan, dating from the Tang dynasty to modern times. Each sample is carefully described in the accompanying printed text. The author has also provided much text on the history of papermaking in East Asia with descriptions of papermaking techniques. With an excellent index. Fine set in the original chitsu.

Description
Scroll (385 x 8560 mm.), with fine colored paintings, using brush, ink, & various colors of wash, of the route and major features along the way. [Japan:] mid-Edo. The route from Edo (today’s Tokyo) to Nagasaki (and vice versa), by land and by sea, was one of the major thoroughfares and trade routes of Edo-period Japan. The Dutch and Chinese had been allowed to establish exclusive trading outposts in Nagasaki, and Edo was the heart of domestic commerce and administration. Foreign goods, especially silks, other luxury items, raw materials useful to the military, and medicinal goods, flowed through Nagasaki to Edo and the rest of Japan, while Japanese goods, including copper, silver, and porcelain, were transported to Nagasaki for export. Most of the silver was sent to China to settle the trade balance. From the late 1670s to the 1740s, Japan was the world’s largest copper producer and exporter. This route also carried the head of Nagasaki’s Dejima trading post to Edo for frequent mandatory ceremonial audiences with the shogun. The beginning of our scroll depicts the land route from Edo to Kyoto and then on to Osaka. The famous battleship Atake Maru is seen docked at the mouth of the Sumida River. Starting from Edo Castle in the great capital, the scroll proceeds to Nagoya and Kyoto along the Tōkaidō road, which was the most important highway of the Edo period. It depicts in great detail and with manuscript labels: stations on the route; bridges; major castles, temples, and shrines; the palace at Kyoto; other notable buildings; important geographical features (including Mount Fuji partly shrouded in clouds); and towns and villages along the way. Distances are given, and travellers are well-depicted, showing their various clothing. Also shown are ships and skiffs in the nearby sea. We see more landmarks along the Tōkaidō road from Kyoto to the commercial hub and port city of Osaka, an extension built in the 1620s. Arriving at Osaka, we view the great castle, the city’s canals, and other sites. The rest of the scroll shows the hazardous passage from Osaka to Nagasaki through the 400 km. long Inland Sea (Seto Naikai). The accomplished artist depicts the two main routes (and alternate routes depending on the weather), one for summertime in the open sea, and the other, hugging the coast, for wintertime. Another route is shown that involved landing in the Bungo area of Kyūshū island and crossing overland to Nagasaki. Navigating through the Inland Sea, with its 3000 plus islands and rocky outcroppings, presented enormous problems in the era before modern navigation systems. Shown in very great detail are areas of turbulence (including famous whirlpools), numerous islands, rock formations, landscapes for orientation, anchorages, harbors along the way, and fishing areas. The route then passes through the narrow Kanmon Strait, the stretch of water separating the main island of Honshu and Kyūshū, to the Sea of Japan, finally arriving in Nagasaki. Dejima is prominently shown. A foreign ship is shown passing the Gotō islands, making its way to Nagasaki. Our scroll is finely drawn in black ink and heightened with wash in green, blue, gray, pink, and red. The routes are drawn from a partial “bird’s-eye” perspective, with lovely vistas of mountains and islands and villages and towns. In fine condition, preserved in an oldish wooden box, which has the inscription on the outside of the lid 江戸長崎海陸道中絵図 [“From Edo to Nagasaki, Travel, by Land and by Sea, Illustrated”]. Inside this lid is the ownership inscription of Ryōra Gakuto.

Description
310 black & white illus., on rectos only. [24] leaves. 8vo (210 x 141 mm.), orig. semi-stiff printed wrappers, perfect-bound. Paris: CNAC, 1974. First edition, an excellent copy of Boltanski’s fifth inventory, documenting all the earthly possessions of a randomly selected person, this time a resident from Bois-Colombes, a suburb of Paris. This book was published for an exhibition (15 October to 2 December 1974) at the Centre national d’art contemporain. Earlier versions of this piece took place in Baden-Baden, Jerusalem, Oxford, and Copenhagen. Boltanski explains the intention of this work in the Avant-Propos (in trans.): “The inventory of objects belonging to a woman from Bois-Colombes is the fifth project of this type that I have created. In its formulation it follows the same rule as the previous projects: to present, without any selection on my part, every item belonging to a randomly chosen person in the city or town where an event is taking place.” In fine condition. ❧ J. Flay, ed., Christian Boltanski, Catalogue: Books, Printed Matter, Ephemera, 1966-1991 (1992), pp. 106-9. A. London: Henry Hills for J. Edwin, 1679. First complete edition. Near fine. Hardcover. Folio. (xii),339,(i),16,(8),2,10-11,9-11,14-258,369-391,(i)pp. Early full calf Cambridge-style binding, rebacked in the 19th century with the spine in 7 compartments, intricately gilt; leather label, gilt. Engraved frontispiece. Each work has its own title page, and, for the first three, begins the pagination anew, though 'The Shepherds Calandar' is mispaginated in three places. (2),A-Z4 (Kk mismarked K, Nn mismarked N),Aa-Zz4,Aaa-Zzz4,Aaaa-Iiii4,Kkkk, Aaaaa-Ccccc4. Laves A3 and A4 have a stain in the lower margin, else this is very good. A handsome copy with an inscription dated 1891, probably the date of the reback. Unbeliveably quirky pagination and signature markings, but complete. One of two states of this printing: This state shows two bars with catchword 'Calen-" on page 258, followed by p. 359, 'Calendarium Pastorale'. (A second state lacks the catchword, has 'Finis' between the bars on p. 258, an advertisement leaf, and then the 'Calendarium'.) Carpenter, p. 111. DNB suggests that this edition may have been edited by Dryden. Wing S4965. ESTC R7177.

Description
London: Printed for Thomas Tegg, 1824. Hardcover. Very good. This is the second edition of Warton, considerably enlarged and annotated by Richard Price. 4 volumes, 8vo. Contemporary hald red leather, spines in six compartments, gilt titles, marbled sides and endpapers in a stone pattern. Top edges gilt. The leather is rubbed, worn at the edges and corners, and unevenly sunned, but still very good textblocks in a good and pleasant binding. Frontispiece engraving of Warton is present, offset to the title page of Volume I. An academically noteworthy edition of Warton's worn, because the editor, Richard Price, makes the first mention of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight then recently discovered in the Cotton Nero manuscript. IN addition, this edition contains a significant number of Arthurian Romances, also discussed by Price in his substantial Preface, his three Dissertations, and in his copious Notes. AS tantalizing as rthe mention of Gawain and the Green Knight is, Green was not able to manage publication of the entire poem before his death, and it was not published until 1839 by Madden. .

Description
ALEXANDER J. DALLAS (1759-1817). Dallas was the first Reporter of Decisions of the United States Supreme Court from 1790-1800 and the sixth United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1814 to 1816. His daughter, Sophia Bache, married the grandson of Benjamin Franklin and his son, George Dallas, served as Vice President under James K. Polk. JOHN STEELE (1758-1827). Steele served as customs collector of Philadelphia from 1808 until shortly before his death. DS. 1 pg. 5 x 7. April 28, 1815. Treasury Department, Washington. A document signed by A.J. Dallas to John Steele, Esq., Collector, Philadelphia: Sir, I have received your letter of the 25. Instant. You will be pleased to pay Debentures with Treasury Notes. In the United States, a debenture is an unsecured corporate bond that does not have a line of income or piece of property to guarantee repayment. In urging these relatively risky investments to be supported by public treasury notes, Dallas is both expanding the use of government notes and increasing the risks placed on federal credit. As Secretary of the Treasury, Dallas sought to restabilize an American banking system that had been weakened by the end of the First Bank of the United States and the War of 1812. Thus, this letter provides valuable insight into the shift within the Democratic-Republican Party away from the decentralized anti-Hamiltonian banking policies championed by Jefferson, a shift that would culminate in the chartering of the Second Bank of the United States the year after this letter.

New. $65. * Reprint of the sole edition. The facsimiles here given are taken from the records of the Fayette Circuit Court and from letters of Abraham Lincoln. A petition was filed in the Fayette Circuit Court, Lexington, Ky., May, 1853, by Edward Oldham and Thomas Hemingway, surviving partners of Oldham, Todd & Company, claiming that Abraham Lincoln collected certain money, as their attorney, which was not paid over. Four depositions, constituting the proof for Lincoln, were filed in the Fayette Circuit Court, November 23, 1853, and so completely was the charge refuted that the plaintiffs on January 16, 1854, filed a motion to dismiss the case, which was done at their cost, February 10, 1854.
