Description
London: Mark Baskett ... and by the assigns of Robert Baskett, 1767. Large paper copy (measuring nearly 5 centimeters larger than that cited in Darlow & Moule), large 4to, 1 volume expanded to 2, unpaginated; sectional title page for the N.T.; contemporary full red goatskin, elaborate borders on covers incorporating a Greek key design enclosing lilies with birds and vases with flowers, an with a central monogram "M*B" on an oval green morocco onlay, surrounded by a black morocco onlay tooled with cherubs, the whole surrounded by a flame tool, smooth spines richly gilt and gilt-lettered direct, a.e.g.; light overall rubbing, slight sunning of the spines, but generally a very good, sound, handsome, and sumptuous binding. Facing the first leaf in each volume is the following inscription: This Book was presented to me by my Son in Law Coll. Stephen Delancy and at my decease I bequeath it to my beloved grand daughter Miss Phila Delancy as witness my hand, Maria Barclay. New York, 15 August, 1786." The Delancys were a prominent New York loyalist family. Stephen Delancy remained in New York throughout the Revolution but left for Nova Scotia in 1783. Presumably, he commissioned these bindings from England at some prior date (cf. his mother-in-law's initials on the central onlays). The binder has not been identified, but it is similar to a binding described in Maggs catalogue 966, item 154 (the onlay decoration being almost identical). Also included beneath the above inscription is a further one, dated 1834, from Phila Delancy to her nephew, William de Lancey Lawson. Darlow and Moule mention an engraved title page for those on regular paper, but no such mention in the Darlow & Moule citation for the L.P. copy, nor, for that matter, in any of the OCLC records. Darlow & Moule 1181.

Description
Urbino: Domenico Frisolino, 1575. Hard cover. Very Good. Folio; [16], 278 pages. Title page and all text pages ruled in typographic border. Typographic ornament on title page, 18 historiated initials (some duplicates) showing putti with geometer's instruments against a background of Italian hill towns. Numerous geometric figures in text. Bound in c19 (?) full mint green sheep, with red leather title label lettered and tooled in gilt. Edges stained indigo. Binding somewhat scuffed, with upper joint cracked; spine darkened and scuffed. Early ownership inscription on title page, later bookplate on front pastedown. Few marginal notes in contemporary hand. Very light occasional foxing present. References: Moranti, #4 ("un vero capolavoro tipografico" p.14); Gamba 1386 ("Nobile edizione"); Adams, E-995;; Brunet, II, 1090; Graesse, II, 513; Thomas-Stanford, 42; Olschki, Choix, 6539 ("Traduction très estimée"). The first book printed in Urbino in the 16th century, and only the fourth overall. Urbino's presses lagged behind those of other Italian cities, due in part to Duke Federico's predilection for manuscripts. It seems Federico Commandino, the foremost mathematician of the generation before Galileo, had a press set up in his house. He hired in a printer, Domenico Frisolino, and there he published his translation into Italian of Euclid, based on his own Latin translation of 1572. Commandino died just as the sheets were coming off the press. His brother-in-law hastily attached a dedicatory letter (to Francesco Maria II della Rovere) explaining that Commandino wanted the text to be available to "all who are served by mathematics," that is, even those who do not understand classical languages. Euclid's text is glossed by Commandino's running commentary, and illustrated with figures.

Venice: Appresso Francesco de’ Franceschi Senesa, 1594. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to (200 x 145mm). [xvi (of xxiv)], 573pp. (i.e. 604), [xvi, index]. With separately titled sections for: “Delle lodi dell accademie. Oratione di Scipion Bargagli, M.D.LIX. Riformata ... e ristampata”: pp. 511-545 and “Orazione di Scipion Bargagli, in morte di monsignor Alessandro Piccolomini ... MDLXXIX. Riueduta, e ... ristampata”: pp. 546-573. Engraved printer’s device of the author and type ornaments on title. Engraved full-page portrait and emblematic dedication page of eagle with motto “Et Profundissima Quaeque.”; historiated initials. 138 in-text oval emblem engravings depicting heraldry and symbolic imagery. 17th-century vellum; (title browned, creased, paper and tape repairs, occasionally browned and water-stained, as usual numerous mispaginations). Bargagli’s ‘Imprese,’ a piece of rare, illustrated emblem literature with important discussion of feminine agency in their creation from 1594. Native of Siena, humanist and writer, Scipione Bargagli produced this treatise on Italian emblems, his first book being printed in 1578 (La prima parte dell’imprese (Siena: Luca Bonetti)) and then reprinted in 1589. The second and third parts of the treatise, which Bargagli composed in the 1570’s, were printed in 1594 as in this edition, together with the author’s oration in praise in of the academies (1569) and that for the death of Alessandro Piccolomini, member of the very important Accademia degli Intonati in Siena (1579). In the second half of the sixteenth century, most imprese were created by and commissioned for men: kings, princes, noblemen, and intellectuals of the accademie. It was commonly believed that these devices must reflect men’s expectations and were ultimately created to show a man’s faithfulness and love for a woman. In contrast to this notion, Bargagli devotes sections in his imprese to describe emblems made or commissioned by women and for women. Bargagli attributed the creation of imprese to women’s ingenuity and their ability to find a succinct and elegant way to display their intentions through the beauty of images and a few words. Several of the aristocratic women mentioned in Bargagli’s treatise were involved with literary and intellectual activity at the time including Lucrezia Gonzaga, Isotta Brembata, Ersilia Cortese, Giovanna d’Aragona, and Fulvia Spannocchi. Among the superior collection of emblems, Bargagli’s lengthy discussion states that women’s inferiority does not depend on a mental deficiency but on historical and social factors that brought men to monopolize the public space. Bargagli was one of the few to have sided with this notion. This work is excellent for its rich emblematic imagery and for containing glimpses into women’s art patronage and culture in Renaissance Italy.

Very good in custom archival mylar cover. FRANK RATTRAY LILLIE (1870 – 1947) was an American zoologist and an early pioneer of the study of embryology. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Lillie moved to the United States in 1891 to study for a summer at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Lillie formed a lifelong association with the laboratory, eventually rising to become its director in 1908. His efforts developed the MBL into a full-time institution. Lillie was appointed an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago in 1900. He was named Chairman of the Department of Zoology in 1910 and Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences in 1931. His research there was instrumental in the development of the field of embryology. He identified the influence of potassium on cell differentiation and elucidated the biological mechanisms behind free-martins. Lillie was instrumental in founding the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and served as its first president.

Belgrade: STP (Socialist Thought and Practice). Near Fine. 1980. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket, probably as issued) [very slight bumping to bottom corners, tiny scuff mark on front cover, no other significant wear]. Essays, speeches (many by Josip Broz Tito), official documents, government reports, etc., documenting "one of the greatest historical achievements of the working class and all working people in their long, organized revolutionary struggle to build socialism in Yugoslavia," which per the book's introduction had in its 30-year history "emerged as the dominant socioeconomic relationship, as the heartbeat of the social, economic and political being of socialist Yugoslavia, as an ideology and a way of life [as well as] a permanent and inalienable guarantee of the status, rights and responsibilities of working people." (Wonder how that's been going for them since 1980?) The text is entirely in English, very helpful if we want to give this system a shot here, after the revolution. .
